  1. Sound advice........... the prices have dropped a lot, but I'm still looking athe cheaper end of the market so I'm not sure.... I don't fancy spending £500 on a consumable item! Like the idea about the old wheels though! Jas
  2. I don't envy you. trying to rebuild someone elses dubious handywork can be a real challenge, you just never quite know what else they have "half-assembled". good luck. Jas
  3. hi all, I'm hopefully moving house soon to a place with a nice big double garage (not high enough for the landy though ) and as you would expect I intend to fill it with toys. I have most "tools" as such but I'm toying with the idea of getting a plasma cutter. The prices have dropped recently on them and I was just wondering what the "home/hobby" use ones were like? How think a plate will they cut? what sort of quality is the cut? will I need to dress up the edges? also, do they distort the metel with heat when you have made a cut? Any advice welcome. Jas
  4. I use force 9. recommend them, not the cheapest but I have never had any problems and they were recommended by two IT mates who had been with them for 4/5 years. support is good but only via a web forum (such as this one) Jas
  5. That was quick! Mike, Rachel has your seals. yes, they were fitted right (should be, I've fitted 8 in the last two weeks!) Where you take out the retaining ring and the wiper seal is under it, that part of the callipers is pitted. So when you pressurise the system the fluid leaks in between the wiper seal and the calliper recess. All fitted correctly and retaining plate pressed home fully. I must say that the dealer ones were easy to fit in a few minutes, unlike the copy ones I tried first. it looks like the callipers are just past their life. I guess at 160000miles and 13 years (with some reversing into the sea!!!!) has taken its toll. I'll order the copy ones (fingers crossed regarding quality....) thanks chaps Jas
  6. Hi, After chasing brake problems for two weeks now (mainly waiting for parts to arrive) my rear callipers are still leaking with new seal kits and pistons fitted. The callipers are worse than originally thought and the fluid is leaking from where the seal fits the calliper. So what I need to know is has anyne tried the britpart callipers? do they fit? (not as daft a question as you may think!) and do they come complete with pistons & seals fitted and bleed nipple? They cost £45 from ***ocks or £140 (I think) for the Land Rover dealer ones and as I'm skint with supposedly moving house I'd like to save myself £200 ! (I need both sides). What do you rekon? Jas
  7. Same as any other major service I'd have thought. What about antifreeze (drain & replace), belts, check all fluids (clutch/brake, wash wipe) tappets, consider dizzy leads if old, if dizzy even older then points/condenser, Air filter, gear box oil level / transferre box oil level.... thats about it really under the bonnet. You could go the whole hogg and do running gear (hubs, axles etc..), brakes , tires (check pressure anyway) lights, locks hinges etc... the list can go on. Oh......... just remembered. I asked what they included in a service on an x-trail I had last year and the garage (an AA one attached to a halfrauds) just printed out a service list and gve it to me. You could ask a similar place what they would do to get the list of them? Or doesn't the haynes cover it all? Jas
  8. Iv'e seen dogs for £3.5k + and others still fetching £7.5k ! with 200tdi's in. I paid £4,800 last year for mine that was standard with new alloys and a stainless exhaust, good service history and 147,000 on the clock (miles not KM) The recon motor is a bonus, but some may suspicious about it and some may not like the french bit....not because of the french, just because of it being seen as "an import". If you look in autotrader online and try a national search you will see what every one else is asking for one. Jas
  9. I don't know about the plastic cup on the g/box, but I have some pic's of the swivel refurbishment on my website if that helps. Diflock also have a good guide to doing the job. Tis an easy one. Jas (www.jojas.co.uk)
  10. yes without a doubt if you know an engine builder with a passion and knowledge in his work. I used to work for a guy who built A series race motors (mini) for competition use who was a bit of a legend on the race scene for his motors in BHP terms. As for Jap engines being all 100% spot on when they leave the factory my brother in law would argue that a lot of second rate work leaves engine production lines as they routinely have to re-set the "robot" as the tollerances get way out. (big rising sun car production plant in uk.....) I guess were still working to cost in many ways! Me, well I can build an engine to work, but thats it. I only know where the bits go! Jas
  11. I agree with this post completely! i looked for a 110 county for 3 bloody months last year and saw a shed load of dross. If I wanted a 90 they were everywhere. I flew to collect it and drove 350 mile home as I couldn't find a 110 county 200tdi that was in standard condition (but not completely clapped out!). I paid £4800 for a 1993 in better nick (and less miles ) than some I saw for £6000 closer to home! Its a bit like houses really. Its worth what the buyer will pay for it. It looks tidy, valet it and pop it in auto trader. One of the posts above has a point, if its too cheap you may struggle to get a buyer as were a suspicious bunch! Jas
  12. Ralph, do you notice any difference for your elbow with a slightly smaller wheel?? I was thinking about doing the same (but possibly a bit smaller) as I tend to drive with my right arm in the drivers window and I'm getting a stiff shoulder because of it! Jas
  13. you type quicker than me Ralph............. Jas
  14. Can't recall the size, but halfrauds do a viscous fan removal spanner/wrech that is the same size, and I believe they only actually sell one size! I remove them without using one, You can take out the smaller bolts that attach the fan to the viscous coupling, then tilt the fan itself to one side enough to remove the viscous coupling with a standard adjustable wrench. Jas
  15. So from my desk here, I'd assume I need to find the correct replacement park switch from a lucas agent or some other. Cheers Jas
  16. just read the post on internittent wipers etc. My rear wiper wipes at normal speed if I turn it on but it doesn't park at all, I have to stop it when its finished the full arc. The water jet squirts when I push the button, but this doesn't make the wipers do anything at all. Is that correct or is something amiss? Jas
  17. don't buy them then. Go the expensive route and fit some adapted instruments off a "modern" car. If it bothers you that much anything is do-able, check out wjhat the custom car / street car guys do with their motors. Jas
  18. Cheers Simonb, Instrument lights are very good indeed, much better than standard. A dodgy pic which doesn't do them justice........... Jas
  19. Mines a 93 200tdi with them. I gather this was the change over period. According to paddocks its VIn number LA930456 onwards. My VIn is a couple of hundred after the one they quote so it would make sense. I understand from other posts that they may have been an optional extra on some defenders before thiat period. Jas
  20. remind me never to upset you lot.......... Jas
