  1. not illegal, just bloody rare. Even better still, my local LR dealer admits they know bugger all about defenders. "We mostly do freelanders and Range Rovers to be honest Sir...." I suppose it depend where in the country you are as to what marque sells best? Jas
  2. how do you fit 4 kids, a double buggy and two dogs in that then? Jas
  3. my 200tdi with 160,000 looks the same. I clean it once in a while. I *think* its due to worn turbo on mine? Theres an o ring on the driverside rocker cover of the 200 that leaks, I have not worked on a 300 though so I don't know if you have one? Jas
  4. I'm losing sleep already........... Should we make a list of whats what? I have been sent some files that were "new landrover parts catologues" to find they were the same as the downloadable ones on some eastern european site most of us have seen? pm me.......there may be spies about !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jas
  5. looks in control!!!!!!!! ps. thats some interesting site you have discovered there!
  6. I'm happy to start the chain if desired. One or two on here have sent me cd's in the past so I'm happy to return the good will. Jas
  7. I think that must be the first time I have read a positive article this year refering to 4x4's! Jas
  8. I know it sounds obvious but try nipping it up, just take it easy thats all........... you could try backing the plug out slightle, drying it with kitchen roll then quickly apply some silicone gasket and tighten it back in? I can't see the viscousity making a huge difference in terms of leaks from the drain plug (however I may be wrong!) if you must remove the plug, try some ptfe tape on it. Jas
  9. ditto, same set up as minivin, and after 3 years of grief from Norton antivirus I can vouch that its an improvement. Jas
  10. used to punch number into alloy plate then put two rivets ito plate onto block. Of course......this is only of use if you have a suitable place the holes can be made for the rivets... Jas
  11. voted for 300tdi as I couldn't find 200tdi on the list. reliable, simple, and less parts than the 300tdi to go wrong........ Of course, If you had asked for a "civilised" engine my answer would be different. Jas
  12. Can't comment on their work personally, but midland transmissions in this months LRM advertise "axles & diffs" rebuilt. sales@gearbox-mys.com they post overnight delivery also (!) if they can't do it they may recommend another? Jas
  13. thanks chaps, Iv'e been looking up the LPG thing and as you state, I suspect it's not suitable for the wifes intended use. A diesel it is then! Looking for last mnths 4x4 guide as well. appreciated. Jas
  14. I agree totally, Love landy's the same way I love minis and morris minors............. but the oriental stuff has us beat when it comes to the technology side of it. If I depended upon it I'd probably buy a toyota... If I wanted muscle I'd buy a yank, techno muscle get a supra/skyline/subaru, character and stone age technology, buy a brit! make the most of it. theres not much left now to pick from! Jas
  15. forgot to mention, I have read the boards and it appears that there is a split in which one to get (petrol/diesel). i don't care what it sounds like, I'm more concerned about the practicality issues. My wife wants a range rover because she like the look of them and the size of the interior (family/dogs etc) not for BHP or acoustic reasons.. Jas
  16. Hi, I'm just looking for a few views here really. My wife has lately started dropping hints about getting a range rover (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and the hints aren't really subtle... I have a 200tdi 110 so I'm familiar with the land rover build quality (!) and the diesel motors, but there seem to be a fair few v8's knocking about. The prices were looking at indicate a 60,000 mile(ish) P38. I was really hoping for your views on either option, a DSE or 4.0 V8. I have read a LPG conversion is cheapest out of the lot to run, but she only works 4 mile away (well, she will when we move house) so star ship mileage isn't an issue. Personally I'd go for a Diesel for three reasons. 1. easy to work on and I'm familliar with that type of moter. 2. you could put "special diesel" in them if so desired and sometimes they appear to be cheaper (??sometimes?) 3. I don't see why she should go fast when I'm trawling along at 65mph in the 110. What do you lot think? Oh, and one more thing. Should I just expect to have problems with the suspension? Thanks in advance Jas
  17. that RR bumper looks exceptionally well fabricated. was it made as a one-off or is it an off the shelf item? Jas
  18. I guess there's not much happening in the world today......................... Jas
  19. more of a justification for not watching the soaps...............(and to remind me how much I spend on my toys!) Jas
  20. right then, remove 4x prop to flange bolts. undo large (28mm???) nut hat holds on the flange. remove flange & mud shield. Then you can see the seal. Sick a crewdriver in and pull it out (care with inside face where seal "seals" if you know what I mean?. Its not particuarly difficult or tight. then drift in new seal using old seal (stops you buggering new one. Look at paddocks or craddocks spares online for the seal its about £1 ! the parts number is FRC8220. note. when I did mine it still dripped a little (drive flange was actually worn where the seal touched it) so I drifted it in an extra 4-5 mm and its been dry as a bone for the last 17,000 mile. ps. tighnten the flange bolt (28mm???) to approximately "TIGHT" setting. (70 to 120 ft/lb, but I asked the dealer and he said "just do TIGHT" ! easy job, Jas
  21. it's a doddle, give me a minute and I'll get you the order details. Jas
  22. Something similar used to happen with mini coopers on the 10" discs. when the bearings showed any signs of wear the pedal travel was really noticable. Several people used to turn up with a high pedal travel and assume it was brakes, it often turned out to be the bearings were worn, like you say, pack them high with grease and sometimes you need to be sure that your torquing the bearing and not torquing the grease!
