roamingyak
Hi all, I've always had oil in my air filter, from the original 2.5 n/a, the first 200TDi swap out and then the new Turner Engineering 200TDI. Looking to fix what seems a weakness with the original parts, I see there are solutions such as this one from Allisport:http://www.paddockspares.com/uprated-engine-breather-oil-catch-tank-200tdi-and-300tdi.html Wondering if anybody has this fitted and if it has stopped the oil from collecting in the air filter? And are the mounting/fittings extremely robust? I do thousands of miles on corrugations in Africa etc Any thoughts welcome!
western
my 200tdi is over 24 years old with the original cyclonic breather, I just wipe out the air filter housing at each filter change, hasn't caused me any problems.
roamingyak
Thats what I've been doing - but I go through a lot more air filters as the oil mixes with the incredible amounts of dust that gets in there in Africa and makes cleaning them impossible (even with a snorkel). So interested to know if this would stop the oil? FYI, have a look at the dust behind this guy then imagine driving past him and into it 😉
western
a catch tank with the breather rerouted into it will keep the air cleaner fre of oil, so go for it.
monkie
I thought the Tdi engines had the breather pipe from the cyclonic filter enter the induction system after the air filter unlike the 12j and 19j? I know my 300tdi did.... The oil ended up in the intercooler rather than the air filter. I have heard of someone using an inline filter from a compressed air system to remove oil mist in the breather. Not tried it myself but it sounds sensible to me. ianmayco68
I’ve got an Allisport one fitted on my 200tdi 110 , I rebuilt the engine 2 years ago and the few times since that I’ve had the air box off I’ve not noticed any oil in the box , whether I’m just lucky I don’t know . As for the fitting it fits in exactly the same way as the original one and I’ve had no problems there , if you can wait till the weekend I’ll take the filter box off and take some photos for you if you want . cheers Ian
roamingyak
Thanks Ian, that would be great - and nice to have a recommendation from a user of the product 😉
ianmayco68
Had a bit of time this morning so had a look there was some black residue there but it was dry and looked like soot , had to change the tank to sump hose a while ago as it was knackered . Didn’t fetch the air box off but rubbed some tissue round inside the top of the air box and got the same dry black oil . The trucks used daily about 25miles so as it was used last night I would have thought it would have still been wet if lots were coming up . thats a couple of fitting, same as original that’s what was on the tissue when I rubbed it round the inside the air box were the hose comes in from the tank and inside the hose and a couple of inside the hose , hope this helps as how I use my truck is totally different to how you use yours. If you would like me to take the air box off still and have a look inside at the weekend I would be happy to do so . Cheers Ian
cackshifter
Or there are the Mann & Hummel Provent separators, which I think use a filter rather than a cyclone; you would need to make some sort of adaptor to the cylinder head to use one, but they seem to have a good reputation. oneandtwo
I’ve had Alli sport breathers fitted to my 300tdis for ages. I’ve never had any oil in the air filter, but I always used to get oil leaking from the old cyclonic breather to rocker cover joint, despite new O rings etc. The Alli sport breathers totally cured that leak. I was on the understanding that the Alli sport breathers are actually not as good as the original cyclonic breathers as I didn’t think there was actually anything inside the Alli sport ones, they are just an empty chamber? ianmayco68
According to there web site there is internal baffles rather than the mesh or gauze found in Gen ones inside , reducing the chances of it getting blocked .
