CharlieB
Just starting a Speeduino install on a 3.9 engine. Has anyone tried coil on plug modules on this engine. I was thinking of the Bosch /Audi ones, but I think they will probably foul each other in the centre two plug positions. I will go for the VW style packs with built in igniters otherwise, but it would have been good to get rid of the HT leads altogether as the vehicle is an offroad pickup. Are there any short stubby units available? Regards Charles
FridgeFreezer
I've not seen any CoP modules that aren't designed to sit down a deep hole, so interested to see if you find any.
CharlieB
Yes, normally on DOHC engines with plenty of room in the centre of the head. There are American V8's with coil on plugs, and one of the late BMW V8 Range Rover engine has them. I have found ones with cranked ends that might work. CharlieB
Somebody has used these Ford DG508 units for a F150 4.6 lite V8 on a Datsun head. They look like they would fit with a support bracket. Also very cheap. They would need a drive module to power them.
Bowie69
I'm not sure of the benefit in the RV8 application?
mad_pete
Because it’s cool. 🙂 other than that I don’t think you will see that much.
CharlieB
My pickup has a very open engine compartment, no inner wings, so it gets rather wet in there. getting rid of the dizzi will make the biggest improvement, but it would be nice to remove the HT leads altogether. mad_pete
We I say look cool only I mean vs coil packs rather than the dizzy.
CharlieB
I will probably end up with pair of coil packs at the back of the engine, probably the least wet area! and some good quality plug leads.
Bowie69
Could always put the coil packs behind the bulkhead, if you are regularly deep wading....
mad_pete
I want to put mine there. They are water proof though. I’d like to see what bracket you come up with.
smallfry
Wouldnt they be a bit too close to the exhaust manifolds though ?
CharlieB
smallfry, they would be a bit close, would probably need a heatshield. I'm still looking around, the Mazda MX8 ones look interesting with drivers built in. I have a good bulkhead high up just under the bonnet, but the leads would be a bit long. FridgeFreezer
As others have said, I'm not sure the benefit of this other than a more cluttered engine bay / wiring - lots of us on here running 2x 4-pot Ford coil packs with HT leads and having zero problems with water whatsoever, it's the dizzy that's the weak point not coil packs. CharlieB
I think the exhaust manifolds are the decider for me. I'm going to go for a pair of the VW coil pack with the integral modules, as I won't be running an EDIS unit. They use the same plug cables as the later V8 engine with the 4mm terminals.
