SimonBirch
How can I tell which rear half shaft is broken?
Diff
Most likely to be the short one as it doesn't twist as far as the long one. Chock the wheels and unbolt the drive member and withdraw the drive member and half shaft assembly. You can then see if it is broken. Regards, Diff. missingsid
Then again the long one does twist a full turn hiding the weakness then let's go! Sorry the two I broke were long ones.
Gazzar
Replace both, the other one isn't far behind.
Bowie69
Jack up each separately and spin the wheel, whichever turns the prop is OK.
Snagger
A broken half shaft is going to result in minimal resistance through the open diff, so neither the broken nor good side are likely to turn the prop shaft, unfortunately.
Bowie69
I said each separately
Snagger
Still not going to work - the broken side won’t turn anything, the good side will spin the diff centre and the broken stub in the opposite direction, but might not rotate the prop because of the mechanical drag of the UJs and transfer box innards. But you might hear grinding of the broken ends on rotation of one wheel, if the shaft hasn’t moved in its splines.
Daan
Remove both shafts and it is obvious; they are going to need to come off anyway to remove the diff.
Gazzar
Yes. And replace both.
