Garage door height Defender Pickup/roll cage and Snorkel

Recommended Posts

Hi my Defender pick up is evolving and I am considering modifying my garage door to enable me to still secure my 90 when not in use.

I do intend to fit a roll cage and snorkel at some stage.

Would any one with such fitted be able to measure the height from top of roof to highest point on cage and snorkel. So I can make sure that if I do modify my garage door opening I only have to do it once. Obviously I'll add a bit of wiggle room over and above the measured heights.

My OneTen with a modified Whitbread RollaCage needs 207 cm. clearance.

But that doesn't mean much as you may have different tires, springs etc.

I wouldn’t worry about snorkel height. You’re better off having it lower than the top of the vehicle to give it a chance of avoiding those pesky overhanging branches.

I would probably allow 3 tube diameters for the cage and clearance to the door frame so say 150mm above the roof.

And once the water gets up the windscreen you've likely got other problems to worry about

I'd go so far as to suggest the last foot or so of most snorkels never sees much use :P

I have driven with water half way up the windscreen, it's not an experience I wish to repeat in hurry.

Thanks everyone,  I'll see what the max I can achieve with the opening. Only slight up hill approach so will aim for 150mm minimum above cab roof when modifying garage opening.

I too have waded with water half way up the windscreen in a previous defender and it was exciting to say the least and certainly. Im not likely to find that again unless I move back to NZ which is why Snorkel isn't top of my priorities.
