anyone know why Diesel costs 14p a litre more than petrol?

Nope, he's still running on tar, like in the old days. :P

Average fuel price March 2001 in the UK (source):

- unleaded: 77 p/litre

- diesel: 80.8 p/litre

But if you take the most expensive unleaded and the cheapest diesel then diesel was cheaper

And this is how we make things even more complicated in Finland.

You have to pay annual tax, and that tax depends on your vehicle. Base-tax is 0,26eur/d or 0,35eur/d. If you use diesel, you pay 0,067eur/100kg/d extra. UNLESS you have for example van/pick-up or service car meaning 3 front seats only. Then you pay only 0,009eur/100kg/d extra.

Examples:

pre 1.1.1994 gasoline powered, gross weight max 3500kg: 365x0,26 = 94,90eur/year

after 1.1.1994 gasoline, max 3500kg: 365x0,35 = 127,75eur/year

after 1.1.1994 diesel, big 4x4 with rear seats, gross weight 3150kg: 365x(0,35+32x0,067) = 910,31eur/year

after 1.1.1994 diesel, big 4x4 without rear seats, 3150kg: 365x(0,35+32x0,009) = 232,87eur/year

Over 3500kg trucks don't have base-tax, annual tax depends on weight, amount of axles and type of a trailer hitch. 12 different figures and of course per 100kg per day.

So, gasoline has cheapest tax. Small diesel cars are relatively cheap and so are all vans etc. with max 3 seats. Diesels with rear seats have big tax and of course tax increases with weight. Small trucks are cheaper and can have more seats, but they need speed limiter etc. So pick up your calculator and decide what you want :)

Gasoline costs 1,169e/litre (95E), 1,199e/litre (98E) and diesel 1,039e/litre.

Of course it's not that simple; 4x4s, campers, service cars, vans, pickups and trucks all have their limitations, depending about their import tax. Import tax can be lower, depending on age of the vehicle and construction :P

And we have our own fuel, "heating oil". It's diesel with red colour. It's meant for heating houses etc. Then we have "heating oil for motors", it's also red diesel, meant for tractors in farm use, excavators, forestry machines etc. If you use heating oil in your car and get caught, you have to pay HUGE fines and taxes. There is a temptation, heating oil costs 0,6-0,9eur/litre :)

Hope you find this interesting..

Steve,

Just had a chat with some of the guys across the road here...

Looks like the basis of it is driven by commodity pricing and after that, what the forecourt market place can get away with.

The refined product market is tracked and reported by Platts. The fund managers then hedge their position on the market buying forward etc. and screw up the real picture of what is available as refined product here and now.

Crude prices will have an impact but only in setting the general trend upwards or down. If demand is stronger than supply of refined product, the cost per tonne increases.

They were also telling me that the Govt. pushing the spec for lower Sulphur levels in diesel has meant that less diesel can be produced per tonne of crude, that not all refineries can mee the new low sulphur spec yet and effectively tightening the market. Mix that with the growth in popularity of Diesel vehicles in the past few years (our fleet now 82% diesel by driver choice!) and I recon the market would make diesel more expensive using basic supply and demand as a basis.

In the local area here we have Unleaded at 87.9 and Diesel at 99.9 per litre.

That all said, it seems a massive difference per litre and I recon a good chunk of it will be the pence per litre markup they can get away with in the market place pushing the retail value artificially high!

local garages today have reduced petrol by 1p to 88.9 and diesel by 4p to 100.9, so yes Neil it's looks like they are pricing diesel at the price they think they can charge rather than give like for like reductions for petrol and diesel.

and qrover, yes I do drive a V8 also ;) ;)
