jason110
in the title really, what oil is everyone running in there lt77 g'boxes?? ive been putting in ep90, and the gearbox doesnt seem to like it, especially when cold. thanks jase
FridgeFreezer
I think it's ATF or MTF94 (ashcrofts website will tell you) but it's definitely NOT EP90
Jon_SP
As said, ATF Dexron III should be used. HTH, Jon
Retroanaconda
Land Rover originally specified ATF Dextron III, but a lot of people use MTF94 now as it's more advanced. Or so they say. I shudder to think what EP90 would do to the insides
jason110
lol, thanks fridgefreezer! for the benefit of anyone else who, like me is a muppet, this is the link to ashcrofts website - http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/fa...gory_5.html#a11 thanks again jase
jason110
thanks for the replies guys, im going to obviously change the oil, but is it worth flushing the gearbox out with something, or would a straight swap be ok??? cheers jase
oap
thanks for the replies guys, im going to obviously change the oil, but is it worth flushing the gearbox out with something, or would a straight swap be ok??? cheers jase Just drain it and let that stuff drain for a few hours because its thick. Hope your lucky and have not done any damage
RILEY
MTF 94 =10W40 ENGINE OIL
Aragorn
not quite. Its SIMILAR in viscosity to 5w30 engine oil, and i think 10w40 can be used as a top up fluid, but not as the sole oil. You want proper MTF94, or an equivalent from the likes of Difflock or redline.
Ex Member
Actually MTF-94 has the visocisty of a 0W-30 motor oil. http://members.shaw.ca/jbarge/MTF.htm But it have friction modifiers that help synchro engagement. This document by Redline explains the reasons, http://www.redlineoil.com/whitePaper/13.pdf why an MTF is better than motor oil
oap
ep90 front and rear diff or transfer box, atf gearbox simples
jason110
ok, thanks for the replies, so is MTF-94 better in varying driving conditions than ATF Dexron III ?? which do most people use ? cheers jase
Mo Murphy
Jase, I use ATF because it's easy to find and that was originally specced by Land Rover. If I was doing 50k a year in it I would consider the fancy expensive oil but I don't so I won't, it's cost just isn't justified. I've had no problems with my gearbox. DON'T use EP90 in the main gearbox, only in the transfer box. HTH Mo
jason110
thanks mo, i think thats my first job on monday!! thanks for contributing everyone jase
Ex Member
An MTF will be much better for the synchros than an ATF. Rover speced ATF because there were no MTFs on the market at the time. Now that it is fairly easy to find a quality MTF, it makes sense to use that.
FridgeFreezer
MTF 94 =10W40 ENGINE OIL It may be similar viscosity but I very much doubt it contains the same additive pack, in the same way diesel engine oil is different to petrol. Also Rover specced MTF94 for the R380 which is the successor to the LT77 and pretty much the same box.
jason110
just to update! i changed the oil in the gearbox today, hell what a difference in viscosity between ep90 and the ATF! what was i thinking puttin that horrible stuff in?!?! well it ran like a dream, and the changes feel much much better, so thanks everyone jase
