Alban
Hi all As a newby I'd like to say what a great forum this is with a wealth of knowledge that is brilliant for getting you up to speed. As a tree surgeon I am hoping to buy a land rover 130 for my work but cannot get anyone to insure it. I have been trawling the posts regarding insurance issues and have tried all the usual companies for a quote and thus far been declined every time. I have tried: Footman James Adrian Flux Sureterm Peter Best Post Office CVD Autonet Swinton Call Connection Trust A-plan Sky Lancaster NFU and maybe a few others I've missed. The landy in question is a 1984 110 v8 on the ownership doc, it was converted to a 130 for SEB from new by Special Vehicles. It is now a single cab tipper. Recently restored with a galvanised 130 chassis, winch, winch bumper, ss exhaust and a 3.5 litre mazda engine. It has all been put together professionally by a retired engineer. I've tried all the companies mentioned on here but all have declined for different reasons. Sometimes it is because of the engine or the winch and sometimes because it is a tipper. I never thought it would be so difficult! Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm about to give up on the idea. Thanks in advance! mike4444244
Hi welcome to the forum you don't give any details about yourself? from bitter experience, being young, living in a carp postcode and driving a modified defender makes most companies run a mile! Landy'd Gentry
Hello Alban, and welcome to the mad house. I would have a chat with DVLA with regards to the Chassis details. Do you have any record of the SVA conversion? If the details don't match using the DVLA computer, somecompanies will run a mile as they are only working off a computer screen. Also,do you know who the previous owner insured through? HTH
Alban
give Frank Pickles a call.very good.they deal in modified landy's.01943 850999 Hi, tried Frank Pickles and got the response that it was not modified enough! Sorry forgot to mention my details, I'm in a rural location in the Highlands, I'm 32 with 9 years no claim and 3 points on my licence. The current owner has been very helpful and supplied me all the docs he has on it. There is even a letter from the DVLA confirming that there is no need to change the details on the V5. The reasons I have been declined quotes have been for reasons other than this. It's been really frustrating as there is no single issue that keeps popping up. Reasons vary widely: won't do 4x4 tippers, 4x4 commercial policies, age, non-landy engine, winch. Probably the most common response is actually: "we can't insure a Land Rover with a Tipper body" The current owner is with Sureterm and they won't do commercial policies! GBMUD
I am really surprised that the NFU do not want to know, this sort of thing is usually right up their street. Apart from the Mazda engine, your car is essentially a standard factory 127 with a tipper body - it has some replacement parts but that should not matter. The NFU might not be too happy with the engine conversion, did you ring the national 0898 (or whatever) number, or call your local office? It is usually the local offices who are most helpful and actually understand Landrovers. If your local office is no help whey not try another? You can deal with any office. The Chippenham office (01249 655221) is very helpful and easy to deal with, ask for Rachel or Sarah and say that Chris Watts suggested them. Perhaps it would be a good idea to get the V5 in order first - it sounds like just an engine change? I doubt the V5 says 'V8', just 3500cc, so the fuel type needs to change to 'Heavy oil' and the engine number will need changed. TJN
NFU wouldnt insure my 130 as it wasnt on the database! I use Peacock (Tradex) with a trade policy.

HTH No need to involve SVA on this vehicle, it's a Factory original, before 127/130 became production line built, LRSV used to take 110 off the production line & extend the chassis by 17 inches as a SV product, a friend used to own one on a A prefix reg, it had a 110SW chassis number but was a completly genuine factory SV built 127 crewcab, as the chassis swap was a like for like there shouldn't be any problem getting insurance, just tell them it's a LRSV 130. Alban
Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I finally got a quote with the local NFU office. They originally told me no because of modifications and then mumble something about also not having any other business with them. As soon as I talked about getting my machinery and equipment insured with them it seemed to change things. No need to involve SVA on this vehicle, it's a Factory original, before 127/130 became production line built, LRSV used to take 110 off the production line & extend the chassis by 17 inches as a SV product, a friend used to own one on a A prefix reg, it had a 110SW chassis number but was a completly genuine factory SV built 127 crewcab, as the chassis swap was a like for like there shouldn't be any problem getting insurance, just tell them it's a LRSV 130. I must say when I first saw 110 V8 on the V5 I was put off, but after some investigating it all made sense. This one was also a 127 crewcab with hicap back end.
