Santiago
Hi, I have recently installed four brand new Koni Raid shocks in my 2.8 TGV Defender 110. I tried them today at speed in a rough dirt road we near Mendoza (Argentina) and they are SUPERB. The Defender is another vehicle! Thing is my steering shock absorber is a cheap Britpart one and I would like to see some serious improvement in this respect. What do you recommend as a top quality shock absorber for a D110? Does Koni make steering dampers for Defenders? The only one I have heard good comments about is the OME one. I willl be happy to buy an OME but I just want to check if there are any other options? Is the Old Man Emu really good? Anything even better? I ride 265/75/16 MT BFG by the way. Thanks for your opinions. Cheers Stgo
Off Road Toad
I have tried most steering dampers and found most are a waste of money! There is not much wrong with the standard Land Rover one if Genuine and in good order! The 'return to center' ones with the coil spring over them are a complete waste of money. OME ones are superb and de-carbon ones also Steve
Anderzander
What is the story with those return to centre dampers? I'm more than happy with the self centring geometry built in by Land Rover - but there appears to be a Market for them?
dantd5
Opinions vary from person to person. I for one am addicted to the RTC steering damper!!
western
OME steering damper on my 110, works well for me & self centreing is very good.
Litch
Had a De Carbon one on for 5-years now and it is fine. Nothing fantastic or out of this world, just does what it is meant to without any fuss.
Hybrid_From_Hell
RTC Dampers are as usefull as building a Scaled Motorbike for a Frog No Point at all When you are off road in deep goo and want to go hard left / right the FRTC Damper fights to go bac to centre. OME tre good, if you have caster swivel preload and tracking OK the a cheapie is fine Nige
Disco-Ron
Well, i too like my rtc damper, it assists in getting the wheels pointing forwards again.......... simple as that. However, i could use alittle more damping, as i get a wobble from the un balanced wheels at 46mph............
Tanuki
In regard of 'centering' the steering I'm reminded of what the 1970s-era rally-drivers [in Mk.1 Ford Escorts] used to do: put a band of white PVC tape on the steering-wheel top-dead-centre when the car's pointing dead-ahead. That way you'll always be able to get the steering into the centre-position irrespective of what your instinct and tactile-feedback may be saying. If it's good enough for Hannu Mikkola it's good enough for me. --Tanuki.
