bernie
Can't decide wether to upgrade my standard defender transfer box to one out of a discovery, I currently run on BFG 265/75 Looking at info on the web, it seems like you only get benefit if you are running on standard tyres, as some people reckon that the larger tyres are similar to the gearing ratios that I'd expect to achieve, I currently do about 400+ miles per week, on road. What are your thoughts on it,
reb78
Get an overdrive. Best of both worlds then.
weasel_110
Hi Bernie, have you been on Ashcofts site and used their ratio calculator thingy? What mpg are you getting?
Early90
I run that size tyre and I put a 1:2 box in mine, a 200 TDI . If the box comes out for any reason then I`ll go back to 1:4 . I have a healthy engine and standard fuel pump settings and it will run out of puff on long motorway hills. Landrover got it right .IMHO. Anderzander
I have a re-mapped Td5 with that tyre size and I'm going to try a discovery box. It certainly feels like it could pull a much bigger gear.
tacr2man
I run 265/75 in a 300tdi 90 auto , with 1.2 transfer , its OK for motorway cruising , but too high for trailer towing , as you get into TCL at about 55mph , just about on 2000rpm. It might just work with a manual , but you will be more in 4th than 5th unless just rolling rather than pulling
matthew74
I prefer it on my td5. I don't do any towing but do carry a fair weight in tools and it copes perfectly well. Definitely better on long motorway/a-road runs.
