5 cylinders, but from the pipework it looks like it's a horrid antique last-millennium-style clockwork injection setup.

If only Land-Rover would give us a 3-litre http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_AJD-V6/PSA_DT17#AJ-V6D_Gen_III TDV6 base-model Defender-90 with a manual-transmission and manually-controlled high/low/diff-lock I'd be there with a fistfull of lease-contract tax-efficient options to buy it.

It'd need to pass my "Dogs-and-Logs" test though - meaning the rear loadspace can take half a ton of firewood and/or a pack of muddy Spaniels/Rottweilers/Labradors and then be jetwashed.

Thats a TDCI from a 3.2 Trasnit, I know it's been said above... It's the same type of engine that is fitted to the current Defender, only the Defender engine is 2.2, not 3.2. It's a proper common rail with high pressure fuel pump and electric injectors, not an old fashioned mechanical injection system. I have a 2.4 TDCi in my Transit that has been remapped to 170bhp and its the fastest van I have ever driven.
