muddychris300tdi
Hi all, my 300tdi has got a coolant leak with no obvious leaking joints or split hose, the belt and pullies just spraying water everywhere. Could it be leaking from the spindle of the water pump. Thanks Chris.
simonb
Has the "P" gasket been done on the water pump housing?
muddychris300tdi
I've never done it and I've owned it 7 and a bit years. Its not coming out from where the pump attaches to the block it's coming out onto the back of the pulley.
Jim1
There is a small hole in the casting behind the pulley I had mine leaking from there bearing was gone
mmgemini
You need a new water pump.
Boydie
The 300Tdi water pump has a ceramic mechanical seal. The sealing is done by a coil spring pressing the two ceramic faces together, one is fixed, the other spins with the pump rotor, a drain hole is drilled to allow a small amount of coolant to escape, this leakage over the ceramic faces is nessersary to cool and lubricate the two faces. Eventually however minute bits of grit carried in this small leakage will grind the ceramics down causing them to leak excessivly, given the time you have owned the vehicle you should be pleased with the life of the pump, replace it. muddychris300tdi
Thanks, off to paddocks as I type to get a new one and gasket. Chris.
Roverdrive
The failure of the p gasket on my 300tdi manifested itself the same way. Water was jetting from around the head of one of the three long bolts, and spraying on the back of the pulley of the water pump. For the sake of the cost of a pump I changed it at the same time. cackshifter
Do yourself a favour, change the P gasket and the waterpump bolts at the same time
muddychris300tdi
I've been and brought water pump, p gasket, replacement bolts, and while I was doing a got new belt and tensioner. With only one blue packet being the bolts.
Jamie_grieve
Another mode of failure is a small crack develops on the inside of the 'P' right at the corner of the pump body where there is a stressed area due to thermal cycling It doesn't happen every time but we found it quite often. muddychris300tdi
Fitted new bits in the pouring rain today. Went well apart from one of the long bolts snapping which made removing casing to p-gasket a right pig. All went back on ok and sounds much nicer with new water pump and tensioner. Been on a steady drive and no signs of leaks. Thanks for your help. Chris.
oneandtwo
Hope you got a proper airtex one. I fitted a cheap one and it failed within 500 miles bearings totally shot.
muddychris300tdi
Yes it was an airtex pump.
