300tdi water pump.

Recommended Posts

The 300Tdi water pump has a ceramic mechanical seal. The sealing is done by a coil spring pressing the two ceramic faces together, one is fixed, the other spins with the pump rotor, a drain hole is drilled to allow a small amount of coolant to escape, this leakage over the ceramic faces is nessersary to cool and lubricate the two faces. Eventually however minute bits of grit carried in this small leakage will grind the ceramics down causing them to leak excessivly, given the time you have owned the vehicle you should be pleased with the life of the pump, replace it.

The failure of the p gasket on my 300tdi manifested itself the same way.

Water was jetting from around the head of one of the three long bolts, and spraying on the back of the pulley of the water pump.

For the sake of the cost of a pump I changed it at the same time.

Fitted new bits in the pouring rain today. Went well apart from one of the long bolts snapping which made removing casing to p-gasket a right pig. All went back on ok and sounds much nicer with new water pump and tensioner. Been on a steady drive and no signs of leaks.

Thanks for your help.

Chris.
