Camping Fridge Options for the expedition guys.

Ok my 90 is an old wreck been used off road and competitions for the last 11 years but its time to be serious.

The 90 is getting kitted out for being a tow support vehicle for a trials landy tools and roof tent for the longer weekend comps. I've picked up second hand two side storage lockers for above the wheel boxes that were originally from mobie storage soloutions. I have a 2 draw pull out for the rear load space being fabricated to my drawing in a local metal shop should be ready for me to weld up and fit runners to. That lot will take care of most the tools.

I'm on the hunt for a decentish budget Fridge. Ideally 3 way mains gas and 12vdc. I have no use yet to go to the sahara but likewise I don't want a cheap and nasty Ebay special for £29. Any opinions would be appreciated I'd prefer a flat sided item than can be made to fit on top of the draws and strap or bolt up against the bulkhead. I have 12v power on the side i want t mount the fridge and will hook up the caravan socket to a 230V electric in the rear for use when on mains. I hope to run a kenlowe hot start from mains and also a decent 230v to 12V 40-50A transformer so I can keep the heater running and keep warm when hooked up to mains.

Its a shame the 90 isn't tidier but Its had a life already and I cannot really fault it. I do have a bulkhead coming to repair and get galvanised over the next couple of years in between other jobs and some money for a chassis at some point.

Some of the cheapest ones options come from caravans... Usu. 3-way and used to traveling. We have used Indisit in thepast and worked well for us.

Nowadays, we use Minus 40. Heavy and somewhat old fashioned but works for us.

Good hunting.

Got a 3-way caravan one (venerable Electrolux RM212, basically every caravan fridge ever is the same design) in the ambulance, beware on 12v they draw ~7-8A constantly, the thermostat only works on the mains side. On 12v they'll flatten a battery in day. I've not plumbed the gas in but I believe it's the most efficient way to run them for longer periods away from mains.

Next step is to rewire the stat via a relay to make the 12v side thermostatic too.

Plus side of caravan (absorption type) is they're totally silent.

The Waeco / Engel compressor type are more efficient and can get colder but they're mega pricey.
