steve200TDi
Hi, As some of you may now, I'm in the market for a new Transfer box. I've been looking at Ashcrofts, but they seem rather expensive, so I was wondering if anyone has had experience with David Beaumont gearboxes. Their website suggests that they are a long established company and know what they are doing/talking about. I've also seem Bristol Transmissions - any one used them? And has anyone had experience with any other companies that provided good service when it comes to transfer boxes! Thanks Steve
Arjan
I have just fitted a transferbox to the 110 from Synchrogearboxes. (http://www.syncrogearboxes.com) Shabs rebuilds the boxes and so far I'm very happy. In fact, I'll be collecting a rebuild gearbox & transferbox for the Series from him.. ... and I need to travel 1,200 miles to get them. ejparrott
My last series box came from AW Transmissions in Coventry
daveturnbull
I've heard good things about Bristol Transmissions recently... only 2nd hand info tho, not used them myself.
steve200TDi
Thanks so far! Synchro seem to be quite expensive along with Ashcrofts... I'm really looking for hard evidence! But AW Trans do seem competively priced! Steve
muddychris300tdi
Another vote for shabs at syncro. He did my gear box for my 130 with HD bearings and v8 fifth gear. Done around 3500 miles since fitting and very happy with it. His customer service is fantastic and is always quick to get back to you if you have any questions. Fatboy
Another vote for Shabs Piercy. I bought the refurb kits for my LT 230 and LT77 from him. Very helpful bloke with the advice and prompt at sending out bits and pieces I've needed along the way. I wouldn't hesitate from buying complete boxes from him if I needed them. Maverik
My present Shorty R380 and 1.4 transfer box came from AW... and not having had another recon box to compare it too these are my views... From the very moment I installed it I found that 2nd gear was always a little notchy to get engaged, especially when the box was cold, it seems to have improved over time and miles which it now has 30k on it. Transfer box... again from the off I thought I had an overly noisy transmission and I found that the front output shaft felt overly "baggy" - I remember conversing with AW and he sent me a new front nose assembly at no cost if I wanted to change it to see, I never did in the end as I couldn't get all the bolts out without dismounting it. After driving many defender now I know I've got a noisy transmission, and I've never really found how to quieten it down, but I suspect its transfer box/gearbox related... Not that I like to admit it to myself, as the gearbox combo cost me a fair bit, but I've always been a bit disappointed with my set-up. ejparrott
I forgot, AW Transmissions also did a long stick LT77 for my friends 110, he's also been very happy with it. That had classic output shaft damage
steve200TDi
Well thank you all for your help. Synchro are reasonably priced and seem to have good service, as you've all stated, but they want over £100 to deliver and collect, which I thought was a bit much. So today I have ordered a transfer box from David Beaumont as they charged £510 for the box and only charge £20 for delivery. With regards collecting the old box they have vans in the area and will give me a call when there in the area to arrange collection at no extra cost. Also there's no surcharge to pay. All being well it will arrive tomorrow ready to fit at the weekend! I'll let you know how I get on. Steve
steve200TDi
Shiney Shiney, And it did arrive the next day........at 8am! Head over to here for the rebuild: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=76471 Steve
Jaytee
Old topic I know but how did you get on with the transfer box?
steve200TDi
Initially it leaked from one of the output seals, but they happily sent out a replacement seal free of charge and it cured it. It's been running fine ever since. And after a couple of months they collected the old transfer box too. Steve
