  1. Apparently these can be used as a temporary cure for diarrhoea, but you do need to stand back when removing (possibly with some of the aforementioned horse matting to hand)
  2. Evenin all, As I stated, im not looking to critisize, the mods do a great job, and this is a great place to hang out. As Ive been asked to spell things out; Have read only areas that explain in text and photo/graphics what owning a Land Rover (model) is all about; the history and basic mechanics Servicing guides (again read only in text and pictures) that explain with as much detail as is needed; basic servicing techniques Modifications and their implications (ie if you increase your suspension the following will be effected) again, read only. Areas for suppliers to discuss new products and ask for advice/ give discounts The reason for read only is to preserve the guides intact so that if a new visitor comes to the site for the first tme on day one or day 301 they would not have to trawl through reams of stuff. The benefits would be a decrease in the amount of repeat posts we all see from newcomers (who are very welcome). It would be up to mods to request servicing guides from members and each guide could be rated by its readers. It would not be unreasonable to have a business sponsor or two for some parts. Also RSS feeds on all forums that mean their contents would be readble on email readers. I dont think this is unreasonable, and its something other types of forums could do with looking at.
  3. IMHO if customers buy on price, manufacturers and resellers will sell on price with the resulting quality issues. Im afraid now I only buy original (i.e. branded) parts for all my cars and only purchase items not available from vehicle manufacturers direct from source or via approved agents (such as X products) A few years ago when I was v interested in purchasing a well known brand of storage for Land Rover products, I discovered that a London based reseller (now no-longer trading) was having identical parts made in eastern europe and shipped in along side at a much lower cost. I have to take the 2year old rear wheel carrier off and remove the rust (now taking hold) - I should have bought Mantec but baulked at price.... Also getting good customer service is becoming increasingly rare. I ordered a Laptop from a ‘reputable’ on line book company with a South American sounding name, I needed it for Sat AM delivery and paid extra…. Courier lied about us not being in, we cancelled the order and they STILL delivered it, now its been a week of emails and ‘our company policy etc’ its still here unopened and I have to drive an 80 mile round trip to drop it off ! I try where possible to support local businesses, but due to my working a long way away from home, Im not in a position to always do so. My nearest alternative is an auction site where sellers are immediately rated by buyers (local LR dealer wont deliver (I have offered to pay and their van comes into my town every day but as Im not trading as a business any more for LRs they wont consider). SO rant over. I support independent vendors (such as X or MUD or QT or SOUTHDOWN) and realise their development does cost, but they are all real people who treat their customers with respect and not like they are all trying to rip them off. Im not saying there is no place for non-manufacturer parts but a cheap part is often just that.
  4. My intention is not to offend anyone, and I chose cheese as I had done a presentation for some other bods at work (so this is a copy and paste job). Im am passonate about this forum, and prefer it over the other forums available, im sure when this post reaches the beginning of page 2 it will probably slide off into oblivion.
  5. So in my non Land Rover world, I'm work in the wonderful world of technology. I'm involved in advising on a website redesign for my current client (no I'm not a web designer). I'm saying to them that we [society] will be wanting more from websites and the way we [royal we] consume the information is increasingly changing (for example RSS feeds and tweets mean you can choose what parts of a website and when you visit it as opposed to trawling through every message).... I'm a keen forum advocate, but they do have a couple of things that [iMHO] could do with addressing to make them more 'user friendly' for all of those who visit. To explain what I mean, if you take a fictional 'cheese' forum as an example ("what's so special about the cheese growers" etc). The cheese forums cater for lovers of cheese, forum members can buy and sell their cheeses, as well as ask specific cheese questions (no not the one about the purple vein cheese…)…. After a few years of cheesy postings the forum members have been 'categorised' and to some extent have acquired a certain cheese kudos. The 'beeeg cheeses' are those who post the most, and the 'crumbs' as they are sometimes referred to are those who joined the cheese forum more recently. Beeeg cheeses and their cheesy posters are constantly dismayed as the quality of posts seems to be cyclic and almost without fail a new crumb comes along asking a 'really basic' or even 'stupid' cheese question (such as, "Im thinking to invest in a cheese that I can use for….." or "what cheese should I use for …." Beeg cheeses see these type of posts on a regular basis (often when the last one fell off the bottom of the front page) and it has been known for one or two beeeg cheeses to suggest a better use of the search function. Cheese as we know is an infectious hobby and it comes to most of us sooner or later, so if you can imagine the first time a 'crumb' posts a question on the website it's a really big thing, so you can imagine how they feel when a huge beeg cheese wafts in and 'flames' them. Neither party is wrong, its merely a symptom that the cheese forum needs to move onto the next generation of cheese forum software or to reconsider how it displays its cheese related forum stuff. So a few months go by and the cheese forum moderators have invested even more of their time (which is greatly appreciated and largely goes un acknowledged) have added a few extra lists to their already sweaty forums. The first one they added was entitled 'so your thinking of buying a cheese are you?' in this area they gave clear information about the types of cheese and the likely points to look for. Crumbs or wafts (a crumb who has not even registered for fear of being found out, so they just lurk) could easily and without fear of being melted could gain pre-purchase information about getting a cheese. The mods also added another list called "A cheese is for life not just after dinner' Here those cheesers who were interested in running a real cheese could get updates on maintenance and running information. Both lists were not like the other cheese forum lists, as they were in a wiki format and could only be modified by certain beeg cheeses whos knowledge was second to none. This way wafts and crumbs could browse and not get conflicting information. The mods also introduced RSS feeds on all the other lists so that closet cheesers around the world could get the information and keep the cheesy threads alive even when their corporate masters (who were non-cheesers and had banned the cheese forum from the company web) the information would still get thru. The beeeg cheeses and the crumbs all benefited from the new changes, and never again was heard 'use the search button'… Now Im not suggesting these fine LR4x4 forums are doing anything wrong, but there is a future of forums .. the future is yellow, the future is cheesey….
  6. I am quite partial to the LED equivalents, but have other things on the list before. These are NAS style which are big improvement on standard. I did try local automotive paint suppliers in Canterbury (they also have a land rover dealership), but they were a) closed on a Saturday, and b) did not reply to my emails and c) failed to tell me they were not open on a Saturday so I found out when I went to pick them up (did say). IMHO far too snooty to DIY'ers and they can take their business and stick it where the sun don't shine.. Ive been waiting since May to get a Parrott H/F kit fitted with Messrs Halfrauds, after many failed fitting sessions (with excuses worthy of Monty Python Parrot sketch) and an email trail to their cusrtomer services team, Im still waiting. I would only use them for basic stuff and then only if no local independants had the stuff. Ahem, Halfauds bash over..
  7. Well its not quite as sexy as the red 110 and the bonnet does not have any scoopy things, but looks loads better than the crusty plan plastic of before. used plastic primer and halfrauds Rover Silver (tin of each)
  8. Just looked at Devon 4x4. My winch is completely below the level of the bumper, so a 6mm ally plate with a hole for the free spool handle would be ideal.. I can also mount the front number plate on it.
  9. I recently purchased a 'new' winch bumper from a guy who had mounted it on his 90 but then gone for a lower approach angle tubular (he never acually fitted the winch). I measured it up and the normal fairlead that came with my winch is too small to cover the hole (which measures 315x55mm (mounting holes have 390centres). The warn winch Im fitting wont sit centrally (motor gets in the way of the iner web of the bumper). I am looking for a larger fairlead or should I get a blanking plate that covers up the hole and then gives me an opening to match standard fairleads ?.. Also Im thinking of making a top cover for the winch (to make it more secure and away from the elements).. Anyone done this yet ? http://www.extreme4x4.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_ALLOY_FAIRLEADS.html
  10. Mole grips to the rescue. all out complete with brass bushes....
  11. Well I removed the grille and surrounds. Got the paint from Halfauds and special primer. This morning I thought Id wash the bits down ready for pre-paint, I tried removing the grille from A/C panel (which is in the garage).......... Some bright spark at Land Rover decided to use brass bushes and low grade steel machine screws with cross head tops. You can guess the rest. .... I got one out complete with brass bush, but the others are in fast, and the heads are b*ggered. I have put WD40 on them and come in for a tea, but I can see the grinder making an appearance to cut a slot head in (access is limited with grille fins in the way of mole grips). Rant over...
  12. I have a strange feeling that her majesty may have splashed out on cameras that can see in the dark or they increase the carrot rations...
  13. Ive got a box in the garage with assorted seatbelt items and bolts.. If you PM me with your phone number we can chat and I could send you photos of bits that might help, save paying for brand new bits. Im in Kent and travel up to London on the train each day and could post them if you want. a beer token or forum donation and postage and they could be yours !
  14. Not normally a problem in my case ! The guy I spoke to says it works really well on high vehicles (such as caravans/campers) as there are so many of them around, and they all look very similar from the top... Having beeen in the air a few times, a vehicle with lettering on the roof really stands out from the crowd, IMHO it would also be a help if my vehicle was ever cloned as most cameras also give a vew of the roof as they are up high.
  15. When I first started looking at this thread, I binged SkyTag and saw the http://www.skytag.co.uk/ site which is special roof lettering.. Ive got a set of these (just arrived so will put them on the roof soon) I dont mind having letters on the roof, as it makes the vehicle stand out much more from the air, but you dont seee it so easily on the ground...
  16. I fitted one to a 300 Tdi 110 two years ago, not been a problem, sprayed up and then fitted was good match, not real issues. I recall that the company who made most of the door panels had gone bust (that was the story anyway) so difficult to get hold of. Also the ally angles that held in the glass were well past their best, but a new set finished the job. Looking back at the paperwork it was £150+VAT for basic door, no glass.
  17. We are not allowed to stop vehicles on motorways in Kent unless its an emergency (have to escort them off at next junction /safe place), the amount of vehicles that are rear ended even with blue stobe lights and red strobe lights is just not funny, I know people react strangely when they see blue lights, but the amount of drivers who go too fast and dont leave enough space or just drive like numpties never fails to amaze me. If you decide to stop to assist at a breakdown, please please dont turn your back on the oncoming traffic, I know this is off topic, but just because you have a hi-vis and flashing lights does not mean you wont get into a stickier situation than when Sticky the stick insect got himself into a sticky situation !
  18. DELL XT2 XFR, had mine a few months now, you can pick em up from eblag with DELL warranty, mine has 5Gb RAM, 64GB Solid State hard drive, runs Windows 7 and is my carryaround office. Would not be without it even in this iPad world.
  19. I had a weired problem wiht my 110, its ex MOD Plod so has seen a few door opens an slams.. The driver door plunger was disconnected, when I reconnected it the alarm kept going off, so I got a new one and its been fine ever since, light comes on and off as it should do...
  20. I took mine off ages ago, It was nager'd in with a huge split so never put it back on. My also had the plastic bags with some form of sound proofing (mostly water) so one would have to assume the engine noise might be a little more, but I really dont think many peopkle would notice. If yours is a 110 TD5 and you want to sell it, Id like first dibbs....
  21. Sorry to hear of your recent theft etc. Please could you give more information about your comment re long/short arm of the law ? I know a lot of bobbies who would beg to differ, but if your dealings with the local police has not been satisfactory, it would help to know whay ?
  22. I fitted a set of SPAL sensors to my 110. I was going to start selling them, but I ended up back in the contracting game again so didn't have time. I produced a set of instructions (this is a downloadable PDF) , and found that the best ones were the SPAL sensors that were angled so they did not see the spare wheel. I have a cut off switch for when Im towing. Very impressed with SPAL quality, (they fit OEM)
  23. Ive been reading a few other posts on Lro as well and the earth to ECU seems a favourite and low cost option. Ive checked all wheel bearings, but they are OK. Ill run new earth next week or if its light & dry when I get back after work each night, will have a shot.
  24. Whats really strange is that Nanocom tests for all components individually seem to pass OK ?
  25. I have no reason to think otherwise, its not been off roaded or had any changes in the wheel department. Unfortunately I think Im going to have to get it booked into mainstealer, I work away weekedays, so only have a short time to look at any problems on the 110. I see a huge huge bbill coming my way. Nothing will happen this week (unless they can come and pick it up) but it would be nice to know what the ABS codes are before I look at the mainstealer option ? Anyone know of garages with ECU/ABS experience in Kent ?
