  1. Yeah probably right, it was a s11a swb with s111 clocks running a disco 200 with i think either a s11a or s111 petrol temp sender but can't remember make as i tried loads and I think Bearmach ones was pretty hard to get hold of at the time which was about 6-7 years ago now
  2. I could do that but if i did i would probably find something more wrong with it ( as i don't know the history of this engine as it was already fitted to the 90 when i bought it and was originally a 2.5TD ) then it would be off the road which i don't want, there is normally a reason why a front and or rear oil seal leaks on an oil engine and is normally because the crank has dropped slightly causing the crank / pulley to wear on the seal so doing the job this way is what i would rather do
  3. Yeah years ago when i fitted a disco 200 in a s11a swb i ran it originally without a fan but i was asked to move a caravan for someone in maclesfield Cheshire and it was quite hilly around that area and i noticed the temp gauge that normally stayed in the cold move slightly over so decided to stop for an hour to let it cool down then con't afterwards so after that i fitted an electric fan off i think a citroen Xara diesel can't remember the size though and i never had to use it either
  4. Ha ha to save confusion its a disco 200 going into a defender 200
  5. Sorry i didn't mean it that way i meant having a good fan
  6. Are you sure the wires are on in the right position, i had this with my 1988 90 so i messed about with the wires on the sender and if you swap the two coloured wires round but leave the black ( earth ) wire where it is everything will still work but the warning light won't be as sensitive meaning it will only come on when your gauge gets close to empty roughly about a gallon still in if that makes sence
  7. Are right ok no prob's just thought i would ask as i don't fancy cooking a new recon'd engine
  8. Hi guys I have been thinking about replacing my tired defender 200tdi engine with a recon'd disco 200tdi engine but got thinking about the cooling fan on the disco engine, will fitting a disco engine into a defender make the fan on the disco engine redundent like with a series truck where you have to cut the end of the thread off where the fan fits or can i still use the fan in a defender
  9. Wow totally the opposite response from the Bredbury, Stockport branch of Excel engine services the guy gave me a few different prices and in the worse case they quoted me 700-800 quid inc having the head done so i think that isn't too bad so once i get an engine i will be sending everything there
  10. Its deffo a 300tdi looking at the serpentine belt does the chassis look as though its been mod'd where the engine mounts are fitted if not I would check all the paperwork against the details on the chassis / bulkhead data plate and see if it all matches up
  11. Fit a high ratio tranny box or Range Rover diffs it help stops the engine screaming at higher speeds, you will never get rid of the noise if its a 200tdi with a std gear box / tranny box and or diffs. My last s2a swb i converted to 200tdi was fitted with an Ashcroft high ratio tranny box and it was virtually as quiet as it was when it was still a 2.25p but reckon if i had fitted R/R diffs it would have been quieter still, sound deadening stuff will help but not enough as the problem will be in the gearing
  12. I would love to go the turner way but with having the head done and buying other stuff for it i think it would be close to 2k which i can't stretch to so the idea of stripping it down and sending stuff in then rebuild it once i get everything back will keep the cost down, as i want to fit a new turbo aswell so i know its right
  13. Cheer's tacr2man i am going that way on Saturday so i will call in and see what they can do
  14. Cheer's guys i live in Manchester so i will see if i can find a few more to get quotes from and decide which way to go
  15. Hi guys I am not sure if i have posted this in the right place so if need be i don't mine if it needs moving to the right place, anyway due to the un known hystory of my defender 200tdi engine and as it is showing signs of being well worn and don't want to have the 90 off the road i have decided to buy another 200tdi engine but in disco form, strip it, send the necessary parts to the remanufacturer's and with new shells, pistons and other stuff re-built the engine as i have done many times in the past, ok a few years ago but i wasn't expecting the response i got today from and engine remanufacturer i have used over the years since i last used them the company has changed hands but still under the same name, anyway i went there to get a quote for what i wanted doing and as soon as i said i wanted to strip the engine down myself and rebuild it up once all the machining work had been done all the guy wanted to do was to book my vehicle in to have all the work done which i didn't want so i thought i would ask have all engine remanufacturer's gone this way or has this one just being awkward
  16. Sounds to me its like mine a 1988 2.5TD 90 that was converted to in my case a defender 200TDI engiine by the last owner or in your case it could either be converted to a discovery 200TDI same engine as the defender 200TDI engine but dressed slightly different or it may well have been converted to the later 300TDI engine from a defender or discovery as the 300TDI is dressed the same in a defender and discovery. hope this helps
  17. Cheers Eightpot yeah i was thinking about a cheap one for now as its only the roof we are doing but if he does a good job of it i mite treat him to a decent one as it will come in handy
  18. Hi guys Soon we will be swapping our old ribbed 90 roof for a later smooth roof but before we do we want to re-paint the new roof atm its in white but want to go with black but its been roughly 25-30 years since i last used a spray gun and a novice even then and son who wants to do it has never used a spray gun before so as we are both novices at this can anyone give us an idea of what spray gun to go for, if it means anything my compressor is a 14.5 cfm compressor
  19. Yeah my local wants £50 for a 20ltr drum but I have just bought a 25ltr drum off ebay for £35 and free postage and will be here on Tuesday
  20. Hi guys I have noticed that my front oil seal on my ( no none history ) defender 200TDI engine is leaking more than ever now since owning the 90 for the past two years i have the intensions of fitting a recon'd ( by my self ) disco 200TDI engine as i just prefer the disco version of the engine rather than the defender version don't know why but i do. So whilst i am looking for a disco engine and going through the motions of stripping and rebuilding the engine i would like to keep the 90 on the road as i would need to use the 90 to collect the disco engine and transport the block and stuff to the engine recond's and for general use aswell so as i needed a ltr of oil @ £10 a pop i have decided i need to buy a 25ltr drum of cheap 10/40's engine oil to keep the worn engine running. So does anyone know anywhere that sells cheap drums of 10/40 diesel engine oil in the Manchester area please
  21. yes but the centre part of the roof before it slopes down was a bit close to the barrier looking through the sunroof but i do have a smooth roof to go on soon so hopefully it should be better
  22. Cheer's cookie64 i managed to get the 90 under the barrier today by doing what you suggested and as mine is fitted with a 300tdi / V8 rear axle i hooked onto the torsion bar brackets on the axle and over the chassis and got it down to 6' 5'', well chuffed
  23. Hi guys Well I finally got round to fitting my new cubby box i bought a couple of months ago as the old cubby box was shot and decided to buy another one whilst replacing the chassis on my 90 but never got round to fitting it, well its in now and its set a bit higher than normal so i can rest my arm on the arm rest whilst holding the gear lever like you can on disco's
  24. My last s11a swb that i converted to disco 200tdi sported an ashcroft H/R trannybox and o/d it ran great through the gears with no probs climbing hills but on motorways it felt like it still needed another gear i should have fitted R/R diffs but never got round to it but i recon if i do another one i will keep to a std tranny box fit an o/d and R/R diffs which i think will give me slightly better gearing but not too harsh. the thing is if you just fit either R/R diffs and or H/R tranny box your stuck with the gearing where as if you fit an o/d aswell you have the chance to change to a better gear instead of having the engine screaming or laboring
