  1. anyone got rough figures for the sprung weight (front and rear) of a standard disco 1? I have kind of taken a best guess using LR90's spring calc and come up with 1800lbs for the front and 1700lbs for the rear does this seem reasonable? Pete. edit to add some numbers
  2. On the MOT front mine (300TDi) has just flown through with no EGR and no CAT either. Pete.
  3. Ok well looks like I'll have to find an alternative then I liked these as they are only £9 ea. Cheers Pete.
  4. An EGR is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation system that takes exhaust gas and under certain conditions feeds it back in to the inlet for environmental reasons. What tends to happen is that the valve fails and leads to exhaust gases continuously being recycled which is not good for performance. It also leads to the inlet manifold etc getting gummed up with nasty black stuff especially on older vehicles. They are fitted to some 300TDi's as well. Removing them (and cleaning up the mess left behind) can make a good improvement in vehicle performance. Hth Pete.
  5. Cheers Mark, You say that you find them too soft, but are we talking too soft with the boot full of tools, large trolley jack etc or unladen? Pete
  6. Morning all, I currently have a set of year old (lightly used) yellow 1" lift springs on my 1996 disco and the rears are already starting to sag which considering I don't tow anything and don't carry heavy loads is less than impressive but I did get a good deal when I bought them as I got Procomp ES9000 shocks with them for a good price. So to my question, I would like to replace the springs with the following as they are cheap, fronts NRC2119 (green stripe) diesel rangie front springs (lh&rh) and NRC4304 (red/white stripe) rangie H/duty rear springs. I have seen elsewhere on here that the rears are used by quite a few rangie owners. Do people think these would be an appropriate choice and yes it is cost driven. I only use my truck for my daily commute plus some laning and fundays and it doesn't have a winch fitted. I am not to bothered if they would not give a lift but I suspect that they might give a small amount over say standard disco springs. Cheers in advance, Pete.
  7. I used this silver loaded epoxy from RS however I got mine for free and unfortunately have none left. Silver loaded epoxy adhesive,10gm 2 vial RS Stock no. 186-3616 Hth Pete.
  8. Also to get the 4th heater plug out does require you to remove the aircon pump from it's bracket but the only thing from memory that you have to disconnect is the drive belt. IIRC the tensioner for the belt is 3 10mm bolts that you slacken then you can swing it out of the way and lift the belt off. Then to remove the pump you will need to undo the 3 or 4 13mm nuts on the top of the pump and lift the guard off and then undo 3 or 4 more 13mm nuts that hold the pump down on it's studs. It should then be possible to lift the pump off it's studs and move out of the way enough to replace the glow plug. then as they say in the haynes manual refit is the reverse of removal. I can't remember the setting for the belt but I used to tension it till I could just turn the longest run 90 degrees. Pete.
  9. Hello and welcome to the forum, Not sure I can help on the steering front although if the noise occurs at full lock with the vehicle is moving it might be worth checking to see if the tire is touching the suspension arm rather than the body work. easiest way is to get some body to hold the steering over on full lock and see if the road wheel is hitting anything. (Don't hold on full lock for to long ie more than thirty seconds at a time as it can damage the pump.) If the wheel is hitting you will need to adjust the lock stop on the opposite hub to correct the problem. On the starting front my 1996 300 TDi does a similar thing on cold mornings always starts but takes awhile. I replaced the heater plugs about a year ago with some cheapo ones and I suspect that might actually be part of the problem. It is worth making sure that all the connetions to the heater plugs and between the plugs and the head (the threads on the plugs and in the head are clean and corrosion free and that the connector on the timer relay has not corroded. It is probably worth checking and cleaning the earths from the engine to the chassis and chassis to the battery. Hth Pete.
  10. When I tried the link i got an error message (page could not be found). Might just be me though. Pete.
  11. Most of the aircrarft I have worked on both large and small don't use much to cover the loom's. The older original fit looms are usually just string tied with a nomex string. Newer looms for modifications and updates are some time sleeved in woven expanded sleeve (Snake Skin) which helps prevent chafing and seperates the looms for electro magnetic reasons, (apparently). Splices in wires coming in a huge variety from shielded heatshrink envioronmental ones to bombtales with no sealing at all depending on where they are being used. Some heatshrink is used but it tends to be for Ident labels and wire numbers (as most wires are white.) Hth Pete.
  12. I guess if your exhaust was rigidly mounted to the rest of the car the engine vibration would probably break something however the exhaust system is (or should be) rubber mounted so the vibration will just shake the whole thing. Also if this was going to happen all the defenders that use the same downpipe would also be snapping them. Just my 2p's worth, Pete.
  13. I think you'll find that this was here already Here:- Petition Pete.
  14. Trouble is not all 4x4 owners endear themselves to other road users when there is a good amount of snow around. I remeber a few years ago being overtaken in my 90 by a bloke in a Toybota Amazon down an untreated back road near Alton when there was about 5 inches of snow on the roads. As the bloke went past he flicked me the bird and sped of down the road at about 50 miles an hour which was fine in a straight line but at the end of the straight there is a 90 degree bend and when I got there the pillock had found out why I had been travelling at cautious 25 mph as he had failed to slow his 2 tonne tank down enough to make the bend and was quite nicely stuck in the ditch on the outside of the bend. I was very tempted to leave him there as a lesson, but pulled him out. As he left some what shame faced he was heard to mutter something along the lines of useless jap tank should have coped with the snow as it was a 4x4, which implied to me that he did not realise that his inappropriate speed was actually what caused him to ditch it. Pete
  15. As a fellow 300TDi auto owner I would also say that there is a good chance that the oil level is low. Mine used to do a similar thing when the level got low because of a couple of leaky pipes to the gearbox cooler. I also found that servicing the gearbox (i.e new filter and oil) made a noticable difference. When checking the oil level you need to make sure the box is cold but the engine is running. HTH Pete.
  16. Have to agree. When I went to see the filming I found Clarkson to have a good sense of humour and a very sharp wit. Tis good to see the show back. Pete.
  17. The front calipers on my disco are single line so you may find that there is no issue any way. Pete.
  18. Good point. However mines a deep fat fryer. Pete.
  19. I suspect this might narrow down which company it was Borrowed from a thread about oil pumps.Oil pump thread Pete. edited for spelling.
  20. I also seem to recall an episode where they were challenged to build a glider and suprise suprise there just happened to be a relatively un-damaged aircraft wing laying around . Pete.
  21. Nicely made snorkel. I had been wondering about the top for mine ,when I get round to making it, and that is indeed a very neat and simple solution. Pete.
  22. Those light's are pretty good. I wish I had thought of acquiring one when I stopped fixing aeroplanes. They are also fitted to Boeings such as the 727 and 737 which might help people search on fleabay. Pete
  23. Yep, Steve that sounds like a good plan. Pete
