  1. https://www.expeditionexchange.com/cart/ima...SC09134_-01.jpg It looks like that when new, yours appears to be split... Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies so far. The image that 'Aragorn' shows is the fella that sat at the top of the rear springs - that's ok and working. The bit I'm referring to is a bit like a bike inner tube with perforations along its length. It does have a split all along its length and we found these (as shown in the pic - one off the spring and the spring in the photo still shows the other untouched between coils 2 and 3. I have done about 6o miles in the her today - She's a 1996 300tdi Les - and the stance, ride and response is much better - very pleased. These rubbers weren't at the bottom any way and I hadn't noticed any chatter - and haven't noticed any movement yet - does anyone else have them in? What are they really called and are they easy to get. There wasn't anything on the bottom of the fronts and my Defender doesn't have then anywhere!! If they are suppose to be at the bottom of the spring I'd better get some - I'm all for doing it right and for noise cancelation as per 'Anderzander's' comment.
  2. Do you mean the slit all the way along its length or the fact that both have 2 ends? Just done the fronts - no rubbers there! Had cleaned the rubbers up for re-use but going to try for a few days without to see if it makes a clatter over the rough stuff (never heard anything before when the weren't in the right place - and none on front). But if you reckon they're broken - may need to get new.
  3. Ooops! Thank you Les. Doesn't work too well does it if it can crawl out and up to 2nd and 3rd coils on both springs! Will do front springs and then get them on - ho hum. Dad said I'd always learn the hard way!!
  4. Changing my coils on the Disco for some HD ones. Just done the rears and almost missed these rubber sheath bits on the old ones. One left on and one taken off for photo. Anyone know what they are for? Some sort of protection I would guess - but there's nothing to chafe against? They don't appear to be fitted low enough to the bottom plate to stop any chattering. There are holes in them presumably for drainage. As they are split along the underside and are in good nick they can be cleaned up and slid back onto the new ones but why?
  5. Leaving the nut on means that the wheel doesn't smack you in the face! I learnt that the hard way! A small amount of "WD" the night before works wonders too.

    waxoyl

I always use waxoyl on my vehicles and trailers that get lft ot all the time - I swear by it for halting rust in its track. It takes a full 5 litre can to do the job properly on each truck. Just jet wash clean off everything on a sunny day, warm the can in the sun too to make the Waxoyl run better and use a sprayer. I dilute with white spirit to thin it a bit for easier coating and spraying. You seem to waste less by blockages in the sprayer. Keep an old brush handy with some Waxoyl in a bowl on the workbench and then it's always to hand when you need to protect something that you just uncovered whilst on a job. The nice thing about Waxoyl is that it migrates, as it gets warm, to all the nooks and crannies you can't really get to but that you still want to protect. The worst thing is that everything you own gets covered in the stuff so cover yourself and the drive!
  7. Here's a starter for 10 if you know the name Code
  8. I'm with 'Santalars' - Exhaust leak somewhere. I had a noise just like this and there was a phit phit phit leak at one of the branch points. (Not a hole as such). Could see from the soot build up on outside where escaps was between two pipes. Get someone to do the throttle and get under running hand near to trace pipe from front to back of whole system and all around pipes. You'll feel it before you see it. Do it when cold as you only have a few minutes otherwise it'll get to hot and you will get burnt!!
  9. I would like to follow suit in every respect - but which British make are they please?
  10. Mine is an original and it wobbles too. Admittedly it is 13 years old but it does not seem to have any play or effect when under tension. I only know this as I have just got a new Serpentine belt and had the same thoughts when I had a a load of canaries under the bonnet after the new belt was fitted. (The old belt was cracked on the surface). Put the old belt back on and noise went. Spoke to supplier and turns out I had been sent one of 2 parts listed (both Dayco) so I returned same and go them to supply belt with same Dayco number as my noiseless old one. Waiting to try but will probably keep new one as spare. My advice for any part such as this is to go to a M.Stealer and to physically look at it before you buy and make a comparison.
  11. Which is the best Swing Away for a Soft Top then? Foundry 4x4 says not for Soft Tops. Following this thread all set for a Mantec - now not so sure!

    Shows

Excellent - thanks Steve - I'll keep that one bookmarked and and eye on it at all times Thanks Orange - didn't know that was there - knew we should have turned around Sunday and followed!
  13. I used these on my 300 lamps and think they're very good. Clik Changed the bulb connector/holder and used a new direct earthm that I was advised to do on this forumm and they've transformed the truck. (Now we fries cats at 100 paces! ) If you catch them right and order on-line they often have a 'bogof' which is nice!

    Shows

Are there any good LR and / or 4x4 shows on any time soon? We were puffing westward along the M4 from Reading area last Sunday and we must have passed dozens of Landy's going the other way at about 09:30 - must have missed another one!
  15. That sounds like they were just trying to sell you a dearer one to me... Did cross my mind too! Thankfully have not got one yet 'cos that sort of comment stops you in yer tracks a bit.
  16. I was just about to order a Defender down pipe for our Disco - based on lower cost and better breathing of a non cat one. I was advised by a 'famous' supplier that the Defender one without the 'flexi' would end up cracking?!! So had better stay with LR's design requirements!
  17. I meant leave the 'O' ring out and use PTFE which seals the thread and acts as a sealing washer?
  18. What about the B&Q one with some PTFE tape?
  19. Thank you Les - very much appreciated. Paul.
  20. Please forgive the hijack..... I am searching to find out a torque setting for the Serpentine Belt Tensioner Arm if there is one - anyone?
  21. Look! http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=39850
  22. I know you've probably got your answer now but I've just been and checked my Disco 1 300 tdi and it does indeed have a consistent gentle curve. Well there now! - Good question. Never had problems of a good clear screen wipe this end but I do make a point of changing all 3 wipers each year. I'd concur with the suggestion to get new ones. B)
