  1. Hello Mark, Welcome to the Forum. Truck sounds special - any pics for us to see? I had some work done by Mark a long time ago on a Grif 500 and, well, he was good (and Mark Adams too!!) Oh by the way - it might be useful later on if you filled in your profile.

    disco fault

Ditto - water/dirt in sedimenter or air in system after parts change?
  3. I'd second a call to Raptor engineering. Phil Proctor there is very helpful and open to making anything he hasn't got already in silver or black!
  4. The other thing I found out is that unlike a lot of other companies (that does not include NFU as it happens!) you only need to pay for one 'leagal cover' as they insure you as a Customer for that whereas the likes of Direct Line etc you have to do it per car and then it was 2 x £26.xx!!
  5. I think the auto shift cable might make it too tight for width but sounds a neat solution given as there is, now measured, absolutely no space under the seat in mine. Must be able to do something around there. The ECU is a huge box with 53mm deep. As I may change the engine are these boxes always this big say for a hot wire 3.9 - mine's a flapper 3..5? If the later ones are smaller then cubby box area it will be........
  6. Nice ideas - Like the Bulkhead fitment - very tidy - though I've no bulkhead any more (oops!) and no cubby yet or probably big enough due to auto shifter in the way - but cubby box might be best when I know what space there is in it or in the bottom of it?
  7. Fed up to do any more. I'm happy enough to have saved £150 and so phoned tesco's and signed up. Just written a letter to NFU: Extract: It is with some regret, after six years, that I have to let you know we are not renewing our Private Car policy with you this year due to the NFU’s stance on their required premium. An increase of 71% for no additional risk from loyal patronage of 54 year olds such as ourselves is unacceptable. There are many other ways to recover losses from increased fraud beyond the easiest, yet stupidest, by penalising the loyal and the honourable. It seems to me whether it's Insurance, Home Heating Oil, Council Tax, Vehicle fuel this is going to be a year for fighting the art of profiteering! ! I think it's a case of 'Striking whilst the iron's hot' (people are expecting to be hit) and then gunning it for all they can - for greed! My 2penneth!
  8. I understand that the ECU is under the driver's seat in later vehicles so I'm moving mine from a new battery box where it was more likely to get wet. Can't see the point in having holes facing forward in the battery box for the loom to go in so blocking that but leaving all the high holes. I hope to get some Mud rails but even then it doesn't appear to be enough room under the seat for ECU. I'm not clever enough to fabricate a tray with a recess for the unit to sit in but that might just do it. Has anyone else done this move?
  9. After doing shed loads of research (on and off this forum) I've gone with these guys at Brunel Performance. Linky Quality work I'm assured and recommended Countrywide. Just ordered mine and waiting with anticipation..... John Norman there is a nice guy to talk to. HTH
  10. " new oil, air and fuel filters " - It will be!
  11. I'm with NFU too and mine’s (Disco 1) due end Jan - Premium up 71% on last year!! Something's up but can't get to the bottom of it - they are definitely going to lose business. Expected price hikes but not that much. NFU's policy / cover is undoubtedly good and pretty hard to beat when you look at the detail. I've been with them for 6 years with Max NCD and no changes to risk or vehicles. They sent a reminder wanting £230 than last year even though it has been within a few pounds more - or - less the same for the last 5 years. It appears that loyalty is not recognised or rewarded these days so I'm looking around. The person at the NFU said all she was 'empowered' to offer was a 10% client retention reduction so you can tell that the increases are set higher up. Make of it what you wish - I know what I think! I have our Home Insurance through them too - you’d think that might work for you - apparently not! Anyway - looking through this forum's history showed up a few good looking Companies so that was where to start. Have been on and off the phone the past 2 days. ‘Price Comparison’ sites are pitts because the Devil is in the detail and you need to ask question to get what you want out of insurance - not what they market as savings. Surprisingly to me I found that Tesco's have provided me the best quote with the most comparable degree of cover with NFU, AFTER all the missing bits were added back in (of course the price mounted back up) with the one exception of the personal accident or DEATH was 5K rather than 15K). I tow an Ifor Williams trailer and asked all companies if they covered the trailer too (as do NFU - but only up to current value or £1000 whichever is lowest) and they all say oh yes sir of course. In fact they only cover for 3rd party damages caused by your trailer NOT your trailer if it's nicked of the back! Tesco's rep had to go and look it up and then read it out over the phone. Apparently it gets the same cover as your truck gets (ie) fully comp if you've got fully comp. I haven't gone with them yet as (1) it still is £80.00 more than last year and (2) I've thought of a couple more questions to ask yet (Cost of cancelation fees, upgrade fees etc. etc.) but even when adding all the 'missing bits' in I'll still save £150.00 over NFU (before their magnanimous 10% offer to keep me!!) My only declaration of interests is that the misses sometimes shops there - and I’ll have the club card points if I renew with them!! Last year £321.42 This year £549.27 Tescos (at mo) £397.02 HTH Anyone any experience of them?
  12. Hello Kev,

I'd like to get 2 sets of the MUD rails for my 1988 Def 90 only £90 is a bit much at mo. Might there be a discount from Mudstuff for LR4x4 forum members?

Cheeky question I know but you will know - is there sufficient room once the MUD rails are used to get the ECU under the driver's seat?

    Thanks,

    PaulN

  13. I reckon there is a cold start mechanism on my D300 and it's that which has gone wrong (massive over fueling) at start up causing my SAS smoke cloud in the mornings. You may have notice a previous thread where a number of suggestions were made as to the cause of my cloud but my local mechanic and I believe it is something to do with the cold start timing of injector pump. Maybe earlier 300 tdi pumps had a mechanical advance and the later'ns went 'lectric As per Western I too looked for an additional mechanical link but could only find an electrical connection. Can't comunicate with it diagnostically until I locate 'a man who can' in the next couple of days. I reckon there is a tie up too between the sensor on the top of the head (discussed recently in yet another thread), the EGR removal and the cold start timing of the pump but don't really know yet! Don't know whether this helps or hinders the thread but thought I'd get the info in.
  14. Excellent report - dashed good read too - good result!
  15. It is indeed an interesting topic..... " folk on transit forum have started adding 2 stroke to a tank of diesel and reported massive improvements " You mean the oil rather than a made up mix with unleaded? - proportions? " massive improvements " in what ?
  16. Uh Oh!! Sounds like a problem looming! Better look and see if my 300's got one - if there is, no-one told it that the EGR valve's gone!!
  17. " I cant wait for this tank to run down properly so i can re-fill with some better stuff now. " Would be very interested to hear the results again after you do!
  18. So it's okay to mix a litre or so of Parafin or unleaded petrol in a tank of gelling diesel then? What does it do? - act as a solvent to re-emulsify or does it lower the gel point (? (Appreciate it can't do anything to the fuel in the lines and filters) Makes me wonder what additive they put into diesel at the refineries when the weather is set to go cold?
  19. Could be Summer diesel waxing up in extreme cold (filters and pump - happened on my digger engine (iszu) or has anyone not told you they accidently put a couple of gallons of petrol in by mistake?
  20. On the top of the inlet manifold is a sensor I've just taken my inlet manifold off and can't find one on mine! (Disco 300) Where's it lurking then - Defender feature? photo-pretty please
  21. I remember about a year ago having V.cold day start problemss with my 300 Disco. Tested and found only one of four working! Changing all to new made a massive difference without altering anything else. Still ok today and that's even though I've yet to sort out an overnight fuel or oild seepage - so they're soaked in cr*p as well!! If working they really do glow bright red hot when connected and grounded held with insulated pliers. I had not seen them working in 'real life' before and took advice from this forum and did the job. Thought better of the cheaper 'eblag' ones in favour of Bosch from local factors - never looked back HTH a Little. Paul.
  22. My experience of this is that on damp days (and frosty ones!!) the shoes have a tendancy to stick to the drum even though everything works as it should - especially if left for any length of time. Dry days are fine. This is not good advice......but quick whilst the Aduts aren't looking - I always use the handbrake when using the truck out and about (in this case a Disco) I rarely leave it overnight, at home, or for any length of time with the hand brake on - rather more to make sure of ground I'm on so it can't roll and then always in gear - even better with an auto for those lucky enough to have one - to leave it in 'Park'! Never sticks now!
  23. Presumably you've let out a couple of litres (whilst on level ground) and then added new fresh oil up to the correct position on dipstick to to see if symptoms persist..... You may have excessive oil splash getting into breathers routing itself into induction and turbo! That'll smoke!
