  1. I have just put some extra batteries in my 110 200tdi project. (2x Odessey Extreme 30 in parallel) to accompany my existing Odessey PC1500, and I was going to accompany this with a X-Charge and an uprated alternator. The idea is to put the crank and winch on the PC1500. And the lights, stereo, eberspacher etc on a second circuit so they can't stop the system turning over (OK so the shutdown solenoid might be an issue) and the eberspacher won't cut out on crank. Before I go buying one that doesn't fit, can anyone confirm the Disco 100amp alternator part number, is it: AMR4247? And that this is the correct one to get to fit to a 200tdi (after rotating the casing). I know the defender 300tdi 100amp is AMR5425 but is this the one that doesn't fit? Alternatively, I was looking at the 200tdi gwyen lewis brackets but it appears (reading the threads on here) that I will need to drill and tap the timing case, which I'm not keen on doing. (It's also the same price as a 100amp alternator) I have not got a lot of space left after putting in the airbox, additional relay box for kenlowe and eberspacher but there is still room to go backwards and next to the intercooler pipes (in original position). can anyone tell me how these differ in size? are they wider or deeper or both? Is it just difficult to fit or do I need to have space past the inter-cooler pipes (i.e. move them)?
  2. When was the last time you checked the valve clearances. I know its a faux pas but Haynes recommends doing them every 10,000 (this might also be landrovers view). Blue smoke whilst cold can be piston rings or valve seals. Here is a nice guide for doing them yourself - http://www.landroverexpedition.com/technical/200tdi-300tdi-valve-clearances/ Of course I could be wrong, I will leave it to the guru's on here to give an expert answer. Good luck - hope the 200tdi makes it, shame to loose it.
  3. I have recently been connecting all the lights to my project and the bullets have been the bane of my life - wherever I could I've put sheathed spade connectors and then wrapped each individually with amalgamating tape.
  4. I'm missing the trunnion end fitting Not quite sure if this is right or not). Yes I assumed it would be the same. Anyone with a td5 who could look for me would win a big smiley face?
  5. they are the ones i've ordered. I have the fitting as shown in : http://www.lrseries.com/resources/user/1a26bcb17b769b390e81ba2ae4d73199cc258f75/JEC104230-90-110-HEATER-BLOWER-ASSY-COMPLETE.jpg on the top but I thought there would be a similar fitting on the side, but all i have is a pin that moves. Is it broken? If so any ideas if there is a part I can get or am I going to have to manufacture something?
  6. thanks, as I feared. Hmmm electro plating eh? will have a look and see what people can do in my area....
  7. So I have tried to paint all the hinges up for the project with black paint, not sure why but they've all cracked - possibly a reaction with the acid etch or my impatience (:S) Anyway I was looking at the different options that might be available. When I say hinges I'm talking about door hinges, bonnet, tail gate, windscreen, etc. Basically anything that holds something that might move What are peoples views on: Galvanising - will the moving hinges still work? Powder coating - again is there scope to do this? If neither of these are suitable can you recommend an approach to painting them that won't gunk them up but will give them the maximum protection. Thanks, James
  8. So I have ordered the heater cables for the flaps for the heater box and looking at the td5 heater box I have then there is no way to grip the cable to control the amount of air flow and there is no ring on the cable I've been sent. Have they changed the cable for this or is my heater box missing a piece? Sorry for the randomness of the question
  9. yer - I think it will be fine, thanks for the part number - will get a swap from craddocks
  10. Thanks James, much appreciated. The clasp that holds the gear on the worm drive meant that it didn't grip and slipped instead. Bent the casing so it grouted properly, not sure i should have done that mind. Does anyone have the part numbers for the post 2002 wiper arms, i only have tdi parts catalogue
  11. I went to fix the wiper blades to my project 110 and I am so confused. The 110 has a removable top on the wiper fixings but the wiper arms I have don't have a hole in them to put them onto the thread. Did they change the fixing type as I think I may have a td5 dash with the wiper motor and fixings and I have just bought 200tdi wiper arms. If i need to change anything which is the better way to go? I had to do some bending of the wiper fixings to get them to work on the worm drive and these are showing rust - is this standard?
  12. OK so went to take the drain out of my Salisbury axle and I can't figure out the bung size. I have tried the several sizes on the 'magic' spanner I have but I can't find the correct size. Taking the front diff drain out was no hassle. Should they be the same size and the one I have is just knackered or are they a different size? And if so what? Thanks in advance, James
  13. my 90 has had this issue a couple of times in the last 3 years. I kept buying the £12 shutdown solenoids from ebay and surprise surprise it kept going. You can tell if it's the plunger by sitting in the car with the ignition off and holding some rev's on, she will suddenly shudder and stop - sign that the plunger is sticking. I bit the bullet and got one from LR - £80! but it hasn't been an issue since, alot of carp mouldings out there for the rubber plunger I think. Also getting at it is a real arse. I have cut up an old spanner and ground the side off in order to make life easier (after the second replacement). Otherwise you have to take the bracket at the back of the injector pump off and one of the bolts on this is a star job - nightmare to see when covered in mud and the angle is atrocious.
  14. magic thanks, never noticed one on the zf cap either....
  15. does anyone have these pics? Would be interested to see them and site is no longer there
  16. do mantec do a spare wheel carrier for a tailgate? So far all i can find is this: http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=2227&category_id=99&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=14 The alisport one would be nice but I feel getting the large uprated intercooler would be a better spend of that kind of money
  17. Wondering if theres any news on the 200tdi defender version, and what needs to change on the downpipe? Please say it modifies it so you can get at the starter motor easily.
  18. I could be wrong but it looks like an ARB roof tent: http://store.arbusa.com/Touring-Camping-Gear-C18.aspx There are several manufacturers but I am going to try and get a HowlingMoon, they have nice thick canvas and seem to be really well made. As for the roof rack - again lots of options but Hannibal and Patriot are good I believe. Not sure who makes the one shown in the video - the pro's on here may be able to help. Try looking at http://www.trekoverland.com/ - they do all sorts of touring gear and are the UK importer for HowlingMoon roof tents - get ready for the price though...
  19. Will second this - CwazyWabbit, any chance you can knock some more of your barrel mods together?
  20. CwazyWabbit - do you mean the timing case breather or is there another breather on the injector pump of a tdi engine. Been fitting it all and haven't come across a breather on the injector pump other than that. Think you should have: 2 axles, gearbox, transferbox and timing case. Is that it? Also you need to put the bungs (threaded with seals) in the top and bottom of the bell housing? Have I missed anything?
  21. That's what happened on the 90 that led me to throw a kenlowe on it (or rather it wouldn't lock). Also I never had the cowling on the viscous was fairly useless anyway (is that right?). Have a kenlowe on the 110 project as it didn't have a fan when I got her and since previous experience + naivety in believing fuel reduction stuff I went electric - all fitted now so what you gonna do?Also with the 90 it was fixed off and overheating - only when fitting the kenlowe did i find out that it was because of the amount of clay in the rad rather than a duff fan - whoops...
  22. three questions: Where does one get a coolant loss sensor and is it just a light that comes on - how does it work etc. (ok more that three questions). Is there any point putting the cowling back on if you have an electric fan? (200tdi Defender engine). Can the kenlowe 14" replace the viscous unit or would it be worth while throwing the viscous back on as well?
  23. Looks like an awesome route (I think). Just tried to get google maps to do it and this happened:
  24. eightpot do you mean something like this? http://www.diy.com/nav/build/building-materials/roofing/flashing_tapes/Evo-Stik-Flashband-Grey-10m-x-225mm-10517612
