  1. Only pulled one, some lad in a Merc Vito that cornered too sharp and got stuck in 5cm of snow without anything in the back. Saw a car sticking in a ditch and stopped, but the person had gone, so did nothing there. When I see people in trouble and I have the time / am in the mood I do stop to help, although often they claim they don't need help, or my shackle won't fit in that silly screw-on tow point
  2. 40cm? Gimme that! They're only giving light snow over here, but I can hope
  3. Make the strange feeling go away (so probably a 300TDi rebuild), take care of the interior and electrics, ... It'll be a busy year
  4. If the handbrake works the same as on LRs, having the rear propshaft removed isn't exactly helping it to work Then again, to get there he had to have the diff lock on anyway, so I supposed it would still do its job. Oh well, still pretty damn amusing
  5. Same, too bad we couldn't be there after all
  6. Doesn't W7 have some sort of built-in XP emulation mode?
  7. Sounds like you burned through just about everything with an electric motor
  8. It's snowing over here too. Mighty fun!
  9. That's the schema from RAVE. I'd say it's the relay, but as the schema shows it also controls the mirror demisters, so I'm not too sure then. Might be a loose connector, or a cut cable.
  10. I can't really see where I did that, but if I did, that was not my intention and my apologies for that. True. I'm not seeing all that much information there on the exact process, and the chemicals/minerals they release, but I'll take your word for it then. Recycling still takes up resources. You can't recycle everything, and although Wikipedia claims otherwise, I'm sure the recycling process isn't 100% clean and isolated. And who's going to stop them? The people that make batteries aren't some hippie gods, they're just companies like the oil companies. They'll dig up what they want, and get away with it too.
  11. I'm not denying this With all the hippies that seem to control everything that still think nuclear is bad, this won't be happening. And there isn't a massive amount of converting going on with power from the socket, you think? It doesn't really add another stage, there are already machines on the market that produce plenty of hydrogen for a regular car by connecting it to a tap and putting up a solar panel. Google it if you wish. I don't see the difference really. In the beginning they didn't need to destroy the rain forest to dig oil, they just ran out. What do you think they'll do when they run out of lithium at accessible places? That's right, go look under some trees. Not sure what you mean by this, batteries generally don't seem to have that good a lifespan. This is why I said it isn't really viable yet, a lot more research needs to be done yet. With this should come more companies producing them, better and cleaner ways of producing them (it's already getting there, last I read), ... Most car batteries are built on this technology.
  12. Check! Ferry is reserved and all this time, no getting out of it.
  13. I'm still amazed at people thinking electric cars with batteries are somehow good for the environment. Adding to the obvious of generating the power, there's the manufacturing of the batteries, which isn't exactly the cleanest process there is. You also have to put these batteries somewhere, and you can't forget they weigh a *lot*. Diesel generator driving an electric motor (or more than one) is an affordable start with current technology, and at least it keeps some of the noise going Fuel cells (be it with hydrogen or kryptonite, don't care what the current technology is at) are more in the right direction, and seem to offer excellent power with little storage space and weight. If I'd be building an electric LR (and I plan on doing so in some sort of distant future), this would be the way to go for me. Basically, my plan would be: * RRC * Fuel cells or Diesel generator under the bonnet * In-wheel motors kept in place by something closely resembling portals (just to not have to do IS, although when you're computer controlling all of the stuff anyway, you can just as well computer control some air suspension to mimick that) * Touch-screen controls for what I describe below * Diffs can be emulated, so can diff lock * Low gearing can be enabled by making the accelerator behave differently - electric motors should have a flat torque curve anyway, and by the time this is possible, I'm sure in-wheel motors should have plenty of torque to accomodate this I've done a very little bit of research on this, and most of what I describe is perfectly possible, but hellishly expensive.
  14. Sounds like an electrical problem. Check your battery and alternator, I'd say.
  15. It's an original 300Tdi. I don't really want to get rid of the BW, as I find it works very well. Changing the diff ratios would affect off-road performance, which is good as it is. Tyres have gone from 205/80R16 to 245/70R16, which is about the maximum I can fit without a lift kit etc, for which I see no need currently. It's perfectly fine as it is, but when cruising on the highway I feel like I either need a different 5th or a 6th gear. Currently it does about 120kph at 2500rpm, but I feel cruising would be much more comfortable (and better for fuel economy at that) around 2000rpm. (And no, slowing down is not an option )
  16. Very interesting read. Thanks for that! ... But you missed out on what those of us with a BW TBox should do (apart from putting in an LT230, not going to happen). Is it possibly to change the on-road gearing in these?
  17. I doubt an overdrive fits an R380.
  18. I was wondering if there are any drop-in 6-speed gearboxes available for a 300TDi RRC with a BW tranfer box? When cruising on the highway I often feel I could do with that extra gear. I've tried searching, but haven't found anything. Preferably approximately the same ratios as the standard R380, but with an extra gear added.
  19. Floor plate in the back, doorsills, bonnet, rear crossmember, upper tailgate. There are probably some I'm forgetting. With me the biggest problem are the doorsills, one of them has a whopping big hole in it, but luckily the plastic cover keeps it from falling apart further when stepping on it. Electrics have been a problem for me, don't know if it's common for the softdashes, but the windows, alarm system and central locking have been acting up for ages.
  20. I did that, but none of it seems to mention a temporary stay. I'm still not too sure how it'll work exactly though, if I need to officially move there or not, etc. This may affect it. Perhaps I should just mail them and ask once I know a bit more about how it'll all work.
  21. Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit, but since there are Swedes reading this... I might be studying in Sweden for a year next year, and am wondering for how long you can drive around on foreign plates there. The registration seems to be a bit of a hassle, and I'm not too fond of sending in my original papers when I'll be moving back to Belgium after that (most likely anyway ).
  22. Get it and make it 6x6 already.
  23. I wouldn't mind a write-up on a 300tdi rebuild, especially what parts and tools to get etc. I have the rebuild manual, but it looks like you need a different tool to get each pulley out
