  1. Alternator mostly don't charge batteries but supply power to run electrical items. So more alternator output means you can run more stuff without voltage drop or draining the battery. This is why as vehicles have got more electrical toys (heated seats, electric windows, etc) the ratings of alternators go up. Also the max charge current of a battery is normally between 20-40Amps but if you have 3 batteries like me then you might be getting close to 100Amps charge rate in total. As for the largest alternator on a v belt, I'm sure that vehicle manufacturer did the research and I think that most standard Landrovers with 100+ Amp alternators use Poly Vee (My 3.9 non serpentine Engine has V for everything else but a Poly Vee for the 100 Amp Alternator.
  2. eh?, what? can't hear you We have these on our bus at 130db @ 1m
  3. Think Automotive provided some instructions with my Laminovas (or is that Laminovi? - I have 2 ) They say "Ideally the whole engine water flow should pass through the unit but if this is not possible a partial flow may be obtained by teeing off and running in parallel with water radiator /heater matrix" It goes on to say about restricting water flow in the core might be beneficial in partial flow situations but this cause other problems and you would need to experiment. So on new truck I'm building the water plumbing goes like (this is not tested yet):- Engine (thermostat output)-> Radiator -> Laminova 1 (gearbox oil) -> Laminova 2 (Engine Oil) -> Water pump -> Engine. On something like a Rover V8 Disco auto with standard oil coolers, the gearbox oil is on the hot side of the Rad and the Engine oil on the cool side of the rad. So probably best to break in to the rad return pipe and run in series. My 90 with a V8 in it has a doughnut type oil cooler in series with the heater matrix which works OK (The previous owner installed this) and it goes:- Engine (heater output) -> Doughnut oil cooler -> Heater Matrix -> Water Pump -> Engine.
  4. My 90 V8 (3.9 EFi) has a fuel return, I seem to remember there is a fuel pressure control valve on the end of the fuel rail that is used to control the fuel pressure. This valve releases in to the fuel return. I know that 90 and 110 fuel tanks are different but my 3.9 EFi uses the fuel tank ESR2242 which has sender hole, fuel pump hole and return hole. An EFi in tank fuel pump has been grafted on to what looks like the top part of the original in tank fuel pump.
  5. Just to comfirm ?, the entrance looks to be Here From map http://www.somerley.com/images/estatelrg.jpg Can anybody confirm this?
  6. Both my 3.9 EFIs have a have hot water going air intake near the throttle position sensor, so they also require the 2 small pipes on the radiator(one for expansion bottle, the other for air heater).
  7. Having just changed 3 out of 4 of the mounts, a little tip, cutting 5 mm of the thread on the transfer box drivers side makes it a lot easier as it is very difficult to raise that side enough to clear. Alternatively taking the bracket off the chassis also helps (unless you have got a fuel tank guard making the bolts very difficult to access).
  8. I'm just about to replace the rubber mounts for the second time as my engine and transfer box, as it seems the engine wants to escape when off roading. Last time we used a bottle jack under the engine mounts and sat on the diff / axle to lift each side one at a time and rotate the engine back in to place. The transfer box ones are easy, again just jack up and replace.
  9. Have you checked for missing teeth on the flywheel?
  10. Yes, when you trousers turn brown you've gone to far
  11. I got mine from my local Land Rover independent garage, it's a standard part and just unbolts. Update Part number NTC2676 or http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php?xProd=88743
  12. Or For Some Nokia's Clinometer 4x4 (http://store.ovi.com/content/24295) or http://www.drjukka.com/Inclonometer.html (for free but have to self sign) or on OVI Store (http://store.ovi.com/content/23352) for £1
  13. I think you can get a NAS auto tunnel, which has a small cubby box. This has a mounting for the shifter behind the transfer box selector. My brother has one in his 90 Something like http://www.roverworld.com/images/Vehicles/NAS/NAS03.jpg
  14. Not just the iPhone / iPlod A lot of Nokia's can do the same. Free app at http://store.ovi.com/content/16962
  15. I'm building a disco based truck with a rear radiator and there is a set amount of space for the radiator. The Electric fans are suck and mounted on rear end side of the radiator. Is it better to have a bigger gap in front of the radiator to let air in? or Is it better to have a bigger gap behind the fans to let air out? or an even gap front and back? Thanks
  16. And we've just plumbed in the 4 ring gas cooker with grill and oven
  17. You can ask Land Rover. My transplanted V8 90 Land Rover came with a letter from Land Rover Traceability department confirming it's original manufacture date.
  18. That all depends on the phone and how you use it and what plan you are on. I'm not an expert on Nokia Series 40 phones as I work for Nokia on the S60 side. But Nokia is offering Ovi Maps Navigation on a lot of phones, this stores the map on the device instead of using a data connection like Google maps or I think Vodaphone's own offering. If this model is one that stores the maps on device you can use it without any data charges. Not using the data connection means it won't use AGPS (assisted GPS, which reduces lock on time) and other features, but a basic location and navigation should be ok. I would expect it to give at least your longitude and latitude for free. Obviously if your plan includes a data bundle then these extra features should not cost you any more to use. If not then the more advanced features might cost you more. But if it is like Google maps where you download everything from the network it could cost you a lot without an unlimited data bundle. Also note beware of using data when your not on your home network (i.e. in another country as it could cost you a lot of money, there have been cause of £10,000 plus bills for data)
  19. Or cheaper http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p5157/BOSS-KIT-1/4-HOLES-3/4-SLUG/product_info.html Many sizes available.
  20. I've decided to go along the same line as Alex. So here is the idea behind my new winch challenge truck
  21. my thoughts of 3.5 v8 vs 3.9 efi serpentine. 3.9 has more power and should be better fuel economy. 33% more efficient oil pump runs a better alternator runs at more extreme angles than some carbs. Enough said.
  22. So how do plasma cutters work - have a look at http://tinyurl.com/282yqbe My thoughts on:- What's Good, Fairly easy to do freehand cutting to get awkward shapes. Only cuts metal. What's bad They eat air, so need a good compressor. They have a limited cut depth (some more expensive models have better cut depths) The edge is not always smooth, so will need some dressing to look good (again depends on price) Not that cheap (well for good ones) They always over claim on the cut depth.
  23. Adjusted up, no tight spots and no play. Thanks
