  1. No you can't. All vehicles on the road for any purpose must be insured. The only thing driving to an MOT station (for a pre booked test) exempts you from is the need to have an MOT or road tax. The reason they allow you not to have tax is because you wouldnt be able to tax it without the MOT certificate. You could always insure it for a day using one of the internet based one day insurers. They charge around £30 for a day
  2. I came across a load of new lawn mover throttle cables some time ago and dished them out to my Land Rover friends. We all made extra brackets on the throttle linkage to attach the extra cable to. The cable was long enough for them to be mounted on the side of the transmission tunnel/cubby box and they had enough resistance to hold the throttle open Simple and effective!
  3. I will second this, I have greenstuff pads on my v8 l322 and they are rubbish until the disc's warm up
  4. Depends what sort of winching you are talking about For competitions lots of people use the Devon 4x4 gloves, I prefer motor x gloves as they are tighter fitting with good grip. I normally buy fox racing ones although they don't last forever during comp use
  5. Mine are held on with riv nuts and some countersunk machine screws. They sit perfectly flush in the countersunk checker plate. I think my wing tops are genuine ones - they came with foam to put underneath, when it came to fitting the chequer plate on the bonnet i really struggled to find suitable foam at a sensible price. The solution in the end was from a builders merchants. They sell thin foam with a shiny silver side as a heat reflectant for next to ovens (sticks onto cupboards etc). This was cheap and does the job perfectly.
  6. Yes batteries well worth weighing in. Something that pikeys know too well - they smashed our gate in just to steal 6 old tractor batteries on the scrap pile yesterday!
  7. I have looked into this recently, for the money the new bearmach pro seems to be pretty good as it does all land rovers straight out of the box - but..... At over a grand I decided that something that was land rover specific and couldn't do anything else was just too much. In the end I have bought a second hand Snap on Modis, runing software that covers up to 2010 It has sucessfully cleared the air suspension on my L322 (coming up with the same fault code as the much more expensive autologic that my local LR specialist has) I have cleared and fixed airbag and abs problems on other makes with it as well. I'm not sure if you want or need to do other cars, but I would think that if you decide to sell it on, you would recoup a lot more of your money when selling on a Snap On I paid £1200 for mine,
  8. Discomikey has the right idea I'm sure my 200tdi has a similar arrangement on the bottom of the front pipe PluS it will be cheap and easy to make
  9. Are metal number plates really illegal?! All my trailers have metal plates and so does my BMW! All standard UK font and the right colours etc
  10. I emailed snap on but unfortunately they don't have a users manual, surprisingly though they did send me the complete service manual which should help me get the o2 detector working - everything else is now working on its self test. I can email the pdf if anyone should need it. Hopefully should also now have some training manuals coming from a friend that used to use one. I still can't get a display on the oscilloscope screen though
  11. Hi all, Whilst scouring ebay for much newer diagnostic equipment I came across this . . . . . . . . http://www.ebay.co.u...69428714&_rdc=1 secured for the princly sum of £1.20, collected in the lorry, brought home and plugged in . . . and it works Or at least it appears to - the 15 minute warm up process appears to work without fault which I am presuming relates to the gas analyser. Does anyone have a manual kicking around for one of these from years gone by that I could borrow and photocopy/buy or give me any pointers? Ideally I want to be able to use the gas analyser for pre MOT checks, but it would be nice to be able to use the scope side of the machine too. If nothing else it looks nice in the workshop!
  12. Has anyone on here bought the new bearmach hawkeye pro? I own an L322 (2002)as does my old man, but often have TD5 disco's, TD4 freelandersand sometimes newer disco's and freelanders passing through my hands or requiring some form of work. I have needed to reset the air suspension a few times on my L322 and once on my dad's. I have also had problems clearing td5 disco ace lights. It is also getting to the stage where I know I won't be able to do things like rear disks any longer as the newer lr's have electric handbrakes which can't be turned off without the computer. I also work on a random selection of euro and jap cars (I don't do this as a day job but as a sideline) This brings me onto the hawkeye. LR's are what I pplay with most and as far as I can see only the absolute top end diagnostic machines can do LR suspension resets. The hawkeye can do this. Bearmach's website mentions it can be upgraded to do +ther makes as well - but does not say how much! Thoughts please? £1000 is a lot of money to spend but it looks like it should be worth it in the long run
  13. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/motors/4487797/New-Range-Rover-is-posh-and-pecs.html Looks like this must be the official picture release
  14. I painted mine red (because I'm a tart!) Years ago with proper cailer paint. When (ha ha) I ever get round to cleaning it with a pressure washer the red paint is still there shining brightly :-)
  15. Should read the replies properly - someone already said that!!
  16. I'm not sure how much they are a corner now but General Grabber TR's as fitted as standard up to a couple of years ago sound perfect for you. Quiet on the road, and will get you surprisingly far off road, added bonus they last well
  17. I changed the engine in my m62 v8 l322 and it was a right PITA as space is so tight to get to everything - body off would have been much easier if you could do it with the l322!
  18. Show me a Navara D22 engine with more than 100k on it that hasn't thrown a con rod through the block yet . . . . . . . .
  19. Thanks Gremlin Next obvious question - do you happen to know the thread of those holes?
  20. Hello, I have recently purchased a 1965 2a swb petrol. Negative earth. It currently does not have a temp guage for the water (or oil) and i am concerned that it might be running a little warm, but have no way of telling. I have a space in a panel withing the dash to fit a 52mm gauge (I suspect something similar must have been there before but is long gone). My preferred way of doing this would be to buy a guage and capillary sender, thus avoiding the need to wire it up and will keep things nice and simple. Does anyone know if there is a blanking plug anywhere to allow fitment of a sender in the head? Or better still what the part number is for it? Thanks Sam
  21. Paul has given the best (and correct!) answer here, its only 2 wires, just fix it!
  22. Received mine on Saturday morning and have already got it muddy, bitching at a comp yesterday. Thank you very much!
