  1. Im after some knowledge about how to tell whether a 93 TDI was built as a station wagon. The one i have bought has rear side windows but no rear seats Or is this a utility? Ta Lynall
  2. TD5 is a really good car body doest rust away like the tdi. I had lots of niggles with mine all fixable cheaply but if you are not a land rover person or dont diy you are going to hate it. Early engines did head gaskets i beleive later ones with steel head dowels are okay, rads are a weak point possibly due to previous head gasket failure. Assuming the car starts immediately runs and drives nice, the biggest thing has got to be internal water leaks, real pain in the arse, mine had screen, sunroof and rear door leaks and one from the roof bar mounting . To find them i had to drop the whole roof lining down and out not easy with rear air con. I would leave it a while let and let the prices come down to a more sensible level as i have been watching discovery es premium models on e bay and they are steadily coming down from the stupid christmas prices. I would higlt recomend joining the disocvery owners club 25quid then you can find a local member to come and look at the car with you. Hth Lynall
  3. I think i would be looking at pics of td5 engine on e bay to see whats involved access and so on. Lynall
  4. You can clean rads with a pressure washer but you have to make sure you are square on to the fins otherwise they will bend and if rotten as i suspect yours were they will get blown away. Lynall
  5. Guy on the series 2 forum has a very sexy 4 branch manifold and complete stainless diesel ex system for sale its in the classified section. Lynall
  6. Morris Ankor wax is much better than finnigains waxoyl I waxoyled my old d2 chassis and before two years was up it was lifting, my series 2 chassis i did with ankor wac approx 1 year ago and you can still leave a finger print in it. Ive read lots of good things about por15 but never used it Lynall
  7. Hi Pete hows it going? are still on the DOC forum? i keep toyinhg with another disco but wife wants a defender and i fancy a bit of a heap so when i inevitably bend it, it wont be the end of the world, but a defender is same price as disco only difference is disco is 7 to 10 years newer! I was just replying to another post and was trying to think who told me the info i was passing on and i thought of you, not sure if it was you but you get the idea? Glad the manifold done the job, im still using that large alloy box now its in the back of a 1959 series 2 Im sitting here grinning like an idiot! Lynall
  8. I had the same fan problem with my old TD5 and it took ages to find out what was wrong, basically when the engine detects an overheat situation it sticks the fan on all the time the engine is running and i couldnt switch it off until i bought a nanocom. But until i got the nanocom i just pulled the fuse, cant remember which one as it was ages ago. Lynall
  9. I cant remember what holds the cam in but i do know on the 200tdi engine the cam bearings have a habit of moving out of position causing a drop in oil pressure. I seem to remember there being some sort of thrust plate the drive belt end of the camshaft. Lynall
  10. The good chassis and bulkhead are plus points the gearbox as said is going to be a big stumbling block as will be the paint. How much tax and test on it! if none i would say you will be very lucky to get a grand for it. But im not sure how car prices work in Ireland i seem to remember they are quite a bit dearer. For a decent idea of prices look on e bay quite a few on there. Lynall
  11. Thats the compression ratio not what he will get on a gauge. I dont know the figures as i havent done a tdi for years. I did have an old glow plug i made into an adaptor for the tdi engine but have probably dumped it ages ago. Lynall
  12. I was thinking the same thing when i first read this. Nissan dead reliable but also dead boring i know ive got one and my mums had loads which says it all really. Lynall
  13. Another pic if you look at this pic and your engine you will see the missing webbing and the special renault nuts. Bloke on e bay wants 385.00 for a modified manifold! which i will bet has just had the webbing cut out http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-TD5-MODIFIED-Exhaust-Manifold-and-Gaskets-/280614666949?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4155f002c5#ht_2106wt_990 Lynall
  14. When mine first went i managed to nip the two rear bolts and this stopped it for a couple of weeks then it cam back, stripped it down, manifold warped, and studs pulled out. The studs are only 8mm straight into the alloy head, so cure is get a spare manifold get it machined flat, remove old manifold helicoil damaged studs fit new manifold. What i also did was drill all the holes out to 10mm bar one on each end to allow for movement i also use exhaust manifold nuts from a renault diesel which had built in free spinning washers so also allowed movement, never had any more problems. Plus i cut all the webs out from between the manifold ports. You can see the amount of warp from the pic L;ynall
  15. A lot of the lanes i go down are very tight and that snorkel would be toast very quickly. Lynall
  16. Camshaft roller tappet slide bit on top that pushrod sits on is brass iirc. Looke on ebay number 270531191195 the bit top right is the one. Lynall
  17. I might be wrong but i thought if it was a commercial ie hard top or truck cab it was 195 pounds. My neighbour has a nissan navara and thats 195 as its classed as a commercial and according to him all the pick ups are ie l200 and the like. Lynall
  18. Iirc the thread is 1/8 bsp but by the time you sort out the connectors a kit is probably the way to go Guy on e bay does the kits for series land rovers for £15 and i think they are the same thread I used 1/8 bsp 90 degree 6mm pushfits for my series 2 Lynall
  19. I did initially try and tighten it in situ but it didnt feel good so i removed it this also didnt feel good but i carried on and cut some slots in the old bung and used it to clean the threads up. If i did it again i would remove the manifold to make a better job of it, only need to remove turbo top oil feed and then there should be enough room to get the manifold out as per below pic. I had removed the turbo so i could get some rag inside the manifold as i was fitting and egt gauge. I would use a new bung with loctite if you can get them. Lynall
  20. thanks for the replies so basically just like a series set up ie highly ringable! Lynall
  21. Can anyone tell me where the vin numbers are stamped on a defender 90 chassis looking at getting an early 1990s 200tdi model and want to make sure its legit. Loads for sale some with galved chassis, with a galved chassis how do you tell its id then? Lynall
  22. I had this on a TD5 disco and it was the cylinder head cracking from the threaded core plug hole. You can remove the core plug in situ using a 12mm cut down allen key its very very tight and awkward due to the exhaust manifold blocking access i stuck one in from my spare cylinder head with green loctite and it never leaked anymore. Pic is of the spare head which was not cracked. Lynall
  23. Without a shadow of a doubt you will end end up spending a lot more than £250 on a TD5 over 2 years. Obviously if you are handy with the spanners the cost will come down to parts alone as they are easy to work on. Lynall
  24. Sounds like you have the one for the manual model which is 3 to 4 cores taller than auto one. One for the auto is roughly the same size as std one apart from being twice as thick. Lynall
  25. I did not see that bit about the 33mpg are you sure that was there originally? as i read and reread all the posts to find the answer before i posted my question Lynall
