  1. My wife gave my 110 the honour of being the second worst car she's ever been in, the worst being a Reliant Robin. I think if you went and test drove a Subaru Forrester you'd be impressed, my dad has a non turbo one and it goes wherever you point it, the handling is superb, they even do a diesel version now
  2. I haven't got intermittent at all on my 300 TDI, down is single speed, up is single speed up again is double speed, park is anywhere they happen to stop would this make any difference, is it supposed to have intermittent or does it have a worn out relay
  3. I had something similar this week, my floor mat moved as I got out and froze to the floor overnight, next morning when the accelerator pedal went past a certain point it stayed on, I didn't notice until I took my foot off and it kept going
  4. Winter tyres aren't just for use in snow, they're made of a different compound so they grip better in cold weather, where summer tyres go hard and offer less grip in sub zero temperatures winter tyres don't.
  5. I'd say it was a superb result for the couriers, all the suppliers do is put it in a box and wait for someone to collect it, it's the couriers who've been driving through a foot of snow. All over the internet people are complaining about not getting their orders so it's nice to see some aren't being affected I was waiting for a Royal Mail special delivery posted monday from Preston, supposed to arrive tuesday before 1pm, it came thursday morning, we haven't had that much snow, 30 miles, I could have crawled there and back in 4 days
  6. Thanks for the reply I'm wondering why it would have been given a class 4 test though, surely when they input the registration into the computer it comes up as 3499kg because that's what they have on their system. I have 3 old MOT certs and it's always been done as a class IV
  7. sorry to bump such an old thread I have a 110 High Capacity pickup bought recently, the registration document says 3499 GVW but the plate says 3050kg, it's MOT runs out on 29th jan 2011, it says on the MOT certificate class IV but it was last tested 29/01/10, if this 3000kg limit for class 7 is correct surely the last MOT would have been a class 7 Am I going to get refused if I put it in for a class 4 MOT
  8. I've just put a set of General Grabber XT tyres on my 110 and they've been great in the snow, plenty of grip and no skidding when braking, it's only been compacted snow on side roads but they've been fine
  9. I've just bought a 16ft twin axle brian james CarGo trailer, the only advantage I can see that the tri axle has is smaller wheels which give a lower bed height, I regularly put 2700kg on mine and it tows fine if it's loaded right. like any trailer, leave 1 pallet right at the back and it'll get scary very quickly
  10. I'm planning on using the kit from dinitrol on mine when the weather picks up a bit, ie it gets above -5 Is there a reason you're all recommending waxoil last time I used it on a MX5 it was a right PITA this is the kit i'm talking about or they do an aerosol based version if you don't have a compressor http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DINITROL-RUST-PROOFING-WAX-KIT-LITRES-LARGE-Carr-FREE-/120633143902?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item1c164bb25e
  11. These are the full regulations http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/Rules%20on%20Drivers%20Hours%20and%20Tachographs%20-%20Goods%20vehcles%20in%20the%20UK%20and%20Europe.pdf This is the paragraph you need clarification on. Vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of not more than 7.5 tonnes carrying material or equipment for the driver's use in the course of his work within a 50km radius of the vehicle's usual base, where driving the vehicle is not the driver's main activity. What you need to ask is if this exemption allows you to transport customers vehicles by trailer to your garage within a 50km radius of your garage without using a tachograph, if they say yes ask for it in writing
  12. That won't affect the tachograph requirements, your only hope is the 50km radius exemption,if you collect further than that you'll need a tachograph. VOSA are cracking down on anyone towing, I regularly see police cars stopping builders vans who are towing on the M6 I use a tachograph in my business, a couple of years ago a guy asked me about it, he had a sprinter towing a 2600kg trailer, he said he didn't need one, I said he did. a couple of months later I saw him again and he'd been prosecuted, vosa had stopped him, he didn't have a tacho so they wouldn't let him take the trailer from the weighbridge, he rang the boss who turned up in a range rover and they wouldn't let him tow it either because he didn't have a tacho in. The law applies to cars towing for reward as well, they fined the business that allowed the driver to tow illegally £1500
  13. You may be exempt if it's only being used within a 50km radius of your garage, or you could stick a picture of the pope in it and call it a place of worship Drivers are also exempt from hours and tachograph rules when engaged in certain types of transport operations in the UK. They include: * Vehicles used by agricultural, horticultural, forestry or fishery undertakings for carrying goods within a 50km radius of the vehicle’s normal base. * Vehicles used for carrying animal waste or carcasses not intended for human consumption. * Vehicles used for carrying live animals between farms and local markets or between markets and local slaughterhouses within a maximum radius of 50km of the vehicle’s normal base. * Vehicles specially fitted out as mobile shops, banks, libraries or places of worship. * Vehicles with a GVW of below 7.5 tonnes carrying material or equipment for the driver’s use in the course of his work within a 50km radius of the vehicle’s normal base, where driving is not the driver’s main work activity. * Vehicles used exclusively inside hub facilities like ports and railway terminals (from 11 April 2007 only). 14. Thanks for all the tips, I did a deal on ebay with a set of boost alloys with new grabber XT tyres, so much for knowing what I want
  15. I've been searching for some wheels and tyres for my 110 Hi cap Given up with secondhand after viewing some right old carp advertised as good I've decided I want steel modulars with 235/85/16 road biased AT tyres bought as a package so they're ready to bolt on. Looked at Craddocks and Paddocks is there anywhere else I should be looking before I pull the trigger, i'm in NW england so would prefer to collect so I can see what i'm getting but if they're a good price I'll order online looking to spend around £600, any tips, thanks
  16. I believe genuine 16" Boost And Deep dish alloys are rated for the 110 and will fit disc braked axles without the need for spacers but you need to make sure the tyres fitted have the correct weight rating.
  17. 3 times in 3 nights sounds to me like you need some extra security, a pedal box lock us under £100 as is a full 360 degree steering wheel lock, visible deterrents might make them realise it's not going to be a 2 minute job to steal it and look somewhere else
  18. I have an Iveco Pickup I use for my business, the premium is around £1000 a year with full NCB and no convictions, I bought a defender as a backup as it can pull a 3500kg trailer. They wanted £2200 to insure it for business use as I have no NCB on a second vehicle I pointed out there's only me insured to drive and I can't be in both at once but they weren't interested so I abandoned the idea. As insurance companies are supposed to evaluate risk V premium i'd have thought charging me an extra £500 to add the defender to my existing policy is a £500 gain for little extra risk as only one vehicle will be on the road at any one time but they didn't see it like that
  19. Many thanks for that, another page bookmarked, how did we ever manage without the internet
  20. The rear window in my 1994 Hi Cap pickup is pretty knackered, the sliding catch is broken, it rattles like you wouldn't believe and somebody has put silicone all over it to try and stop the rattling I found a shiny new one on ebay for £88 delivered so was thinking of ordering it http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DEFENDER-TRUCK-CAB-REAR-SLIDING-WINDOW-GENUINE-NEW-/390269509806?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5adde020ae My question is are they all the same dimensions and is it an easy screw in fit or am I going to have to learn the 1970s technique with a length of rope and a knot The headlining has been stapled up as well so i'll probably take that out and glue it back in properly while i'm at it.
  21. Good advice, the mechanic I use had to replace the injectors on a transit van while I was watching, 3 came out fairly easily the 4th was tight, he spent a good 20 minutes of winding in and out with WD40 being liberally applied
  22. Thanks for that, i've found a drum braked one locally Disc braked ones are like finding hens teeth which is why i'll probably end up swapping the discs off my axle on to a drum one, thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated
  23. Excellent thanks, that's good news as the only option i've found so far is a new axle at ashcrofts for £1175 which to be honest is less than I was expecting as I just had the diff done in my iveco pickup and the crown wheel and pinion were £1200, luckily that was done under warranty. Does the donor axle need to be a specific year or will any 8HA do
  24. Anybody know if a Salisbury 8ha 110 rear axle with disc brakes can be swapped for a Salisbury with drum brakes The diff in my 1994 300tdi is goosed but so far the only Salisbury axles I can find all have drums, the discs on my axle are new, will they just bolt on or is it more trouble than putting up with the clunk
