  1. Simple answer - the amount on pulsing is proportionate to the angle of the joint; for a rear prop the two joints cancel each other out. For the front prop on a coiler, the flanges aren't parallel, so the angle across the single UJ at the axle end is small, so it nearly acts as a constant-velocity joint on its own, and that balances the DC joint at the gearbox end. Otherwise, the angles aren't the same and problems arise. Previous to the DC prop, the two UJs were installed out of phase to minimise this effect.
  2. If you wire the inverter feed throughg a chunky relay (X-Charge?) then use an indicator light from the input. You could also have the inverter switched-live to keep yourself safe.
  3. I've had plenty of 'roadrage' from other motorists when I was a bus driver, but the strangest one recently was going through a set of roadworks in my MG. Single-lane roadworks at 50mph, so I was doing 50mph. A car came up behind me reasonably quickly and sat about 4ft from the back bumper. I covered the brake pedal with my left foot just to bring the lights on, no response and no better distance, so I brought my speed down to 45mph gently by backing off the throttle a little. Still 4ft from the back of my car. I came down to 40mph (trying to adjust the speed so that the gap they insisted on would be safer) but they were still so close that I couldn't see the headlights or numberplate in the rearview mirror. At this point the roadworks ended and the road opened into three lanes so I went for the left lane and stayed at 40mph. The car behind took the left lane too, despite the right lanes being empty, and stayed close on my rear bumper. At this point I decided they were playing silly buggers, hit the hazard lights and coasted onto the hard shoulder to get out of the way. The car accelerated past me in lane 1, so I gave some well-intending visual advice on coffee bean selection out of the window as it came past. Glancing sideways I was treated to a view of Granny with her chair pushed right forward, hunched over the steering wheel and eyes fixed on the horizon. It's not always as it seems from your driving seat.

A mate of mine faced this problem- he was going to get round it by turning the engine and gearbox round to the rear, fit clamp-on mounts to avoid IVA (and because his welding's terrible) and turn the axles upside down to make it go the right direction. Unfortunately he only got as far as taking it apart...

  6. Ok, I'll let you off then. If you're seeing big pressure at the manifold then it must be coming from somewhere (unless the gauge is duff) so that's where I'd check next - can you tee the gauge into the same pipe rather than the manifold? Remember, the engine doesn't know what gear you're in, higher gears are just a useful way to hold high load at steady speed for longer periods. Want to drag it down to Bristol one evening?
  7. If you're seeing more that 1bar at the manifold, something funky's happening. If the thin "boost sense" pipe had a hole in it, not only would the fuel pump diaphragm not put enough fuel in, the wastegate would open at a higher pressure too. If you can pressurise this pipe with a workshop compressor then you can find the leak- I don't see what else would cause both symptoms.
  8. Right, stuff it. 92.9: can you force the locks, lift it to a safe workshop and dismantle it for us please? We need technical drawings, part numbers and a stress analysis if you find time.
  9. They look like leaf sprung axles to me, with the free wheeling hubs that you engage with a concentric hex nut on the flange. Not sure there are any coil springs there at all, just wheel spats on the front wings.
  10. Depends how acceptable a failure would be to you. For the challenge boys who will probably blow it up rather than wear it out anyway, and who expect to be swapping diffs on a semi-regular basis, doing it 'by feel' will be fine. If you're going to drive into the middle of the Australian outback then a failure could kill you, and I can see that you'd have a different attitude. Be aware that blueing it will only show you the 'no load' mesh - the pattern changes as the teeth deflect under load. It's a good starting point though, but I suspect you'll need to find someone 'old school' who has the skills.
  11. A mate of mine used to do screen printing onto ally for amplifier control panels, robust and durable. Not particularly cheap but maybe an option. If you let me know the size of panel you want I'll ask him for prices if you like?

  13. Again, I have to ask about the flow through the radiator, if there's enough fan power to pull a partial vacuum within the cowl. It doesn't sound like your fan is the limiting factor. Although unlike m'learned friend above, I'm not going to suggest where else the problem might lie
  14. I have to ask if the rad is cooling effectively, if you're still having problems with more fans than a Rolling Stones reunion gig.

  21. Does anyone know the part number and an indicative price for the rubber diaphragm inside the wastegate actuator for a Td5 turbo? I've a horrible feeling that you can only buy the whole capsule and it's going to be £££.

I suspect I do - I'll throw a part number request on the other forum for Ralph (and probably wince at the price of dealer-only parts ) More driving this weekend experimenting with different positions ( ) for the linkage, I conclude that I need to get most of the movement on the lever between 0 and 0.75ish bar to give good response - it's quite acceptable the rest of the time with a quite conservative setting.
  23. He's safe from trees after we bolted six metres of perfectly-measured CDS to his truck lt today. Shame he couldn't get a decent even coat of paint on it first though, spoils the whole job.
  24. After Bishbosh nearly had a haemorrhage today as I climbed up his windscreen as part of the three-part comedy that was fitting his cage, I have a question. How many others on here walk on their roof? I clamber all over mine, but little Matt suggested that might explain why my truck looks like it does.
