  1. If you "trim" the excess plastic off the top and sides would it then be below line of sight?
  2. Like this. Cost me £2.00 at Sodbury?
  3. A farme bushes (as opposed to ball) or trialing arm bushes would also make this noise.
  4. I think someones had the rear of the 110 to bits before and not refitted gaskets. This has let water in. As the axle seals are holding back the EP90, this has left the splines operating in a really crappy environment and increased the wear rate.
  5. Fence post temporarily fixed. Trees down, oh the joy of a newly sharpened chain Caravan moved. 110 in workshop. Long shaft totally worn out on the outboard splines Short shaft and both menmbers about half gone I don't understand it, My 90 is twice the age and twice the mileage and they are fine. The hubs are very dry on the 110 (90 soaked in grease and EP90)with a lot of debris and no gasket on the member to hub interface. So I think I need to strip down the hub to check the bearings, there is no play but they rumble a bit. Probably a job for tomorrow. I'm shattered and on kiddy duty 'till they go to bed. Top Gear starts a new series tonight.
  6. Good call!! I now feel a pr4t for two reasons. 1. I should have worked that out myself. 2. When I was stuck on the roundabout all I had to do was pull on the handbrake and I would have been off! Still to assess if there is any damage to the shaft splines of just the drive member. I would say it went without warning, but it could explain the occasional judder we got on pull away that I thought was the clutch. I would love to put it in the workshop, but the caravan is in there. Cannot get that out 'till I've felled a few more trees around it's storage space. Need the Landrover to get it out. The 110 is front wheel drive only. The 90 is tied to the fence to stop that blowing away as we lost a few fenceposts today!
  7. Just took a quick visit to town before the kids tea and nearly got stranded! Pulled away at a roundabout. An almighty bang followed by lots of rotating graunching noises. Knew I had lost drive one end and had to get in in diffllock to move it. Would it go? No chance, I was getting out ot push it when it just went on it's own. Drove it off the roundabout, then stopped to look underneath to check I was not dragging something (like a propshaft). Pulled off sharpish to see which end still had drive (the front), got home with no further noise. It is definately not the t'box output as the rear prop turns in gear without he car moving, but LOTS of bad noise. So what is it and how to tell. It's dark, the weather is £$%^& and my workshop is full of something big and imovable, so practical investigation is out of the question. I've been in a vehicle with a busted halfshaft before and it did not make this noise. On the other hand if it were the diff (110, so a Salisbury) I would have expected some noise on the drive home when the axle was "freewheeling". Six of one half a dozen of the other, I cannot work it out (whilst sat at the computer).
  8. A friend has a 20y/o 110 insured with the NFU for an unusually high value. It's had a full rebuild on Galv chassis, 300tdi, new doors all round, good bare respray etc. It is not an "agreed value". But NFU know what it is and will consider the receipts/rebuild should a claim arise.
  9. If you trust yourself with a hammer in that area, take the nuts off and drive the pins out with a hammer and drift. Just be careful you do not get over enthusisatic and bend the flaps the pins sit in.
  10. I'm almost willing to bet you'll get "send us and email" response to your phonecall. Good website Good prices Absolutely no customer service! Some of their T&C are a bit dodgy too, especially items are customers risk once passed to (our) carrier! On the plus side, always got what I wanted, just not when I expected it.
  11. Hmmm. I think a 5amp fuse will keep the stop solenoid open too. So no use as an emergency cut out. Memory wire on a radio is usually fused at 0.5amp. Could try that, I don't know what the stop solenoid pulls! I know it stays open at low (<8v)voltages so I suspect it is very little.
  12. Give "Challenger 4x4" a call to see who they use. A lot of their customers leave them vehicles to MOT, right up to challenge spec vehicles. They are in Aldershot so a bit further than you want but you'll probably find they use someone used to "agricultural" vehicles! I used to have mine MOTed in the council workshops in Farnham.

    Nuts!

Bodgetastic, that's very nearly 11st on a 250mm wheelbrace John, good spot on the rust streaks. Wish I had noticed them!

    Nuts!

I frequently see the monkeys at the tyre place consult the workshop manual and adjust the torque settings on their rattle guns, not. I have had to drill bolts, put on by the monkeys, out before. Once the tension was released, by getting the head off, the rest of the bolt turned in the threads by hand I have one of the extendable wheelbraces. I usually "nip" the nuts up, pulling up the brace without extension. I, should, then be guaranteed to get them off again using the extension. Never had to jump up and down on a brace to get the wheel off using this method.

    Nuts!

The last set of 8 spokes were thick as well, so I've always had 1 or 2 turns of thread left in the nut. Never really thought that extra bit would make the difference, might now convince myself otherwise The drivers side were not quite as tight as I expected either. The backs were very well done up. I can only think I didn't give them the last "nip up" after I had them off for the bulkhead change (although I was sure I had) or they had them off at the MOT. And then, it's taken them ~600 miles to work loose and 1 and 1/2 miles to come off!

    Nuts!

Also a good recomendation for using original LR wheels as the centres fit closely over the hub. An 8 spoke would have vibrated itself off or at the very least would have mullered the rim and studs.
  17. Just a heads up to "check your nuts" Used the 20yr old 90 for the daily 80mile commute last week. Nothing unusual in that, have to put some miles on it somehow as it goes nowhere interesting anymore. Coming off th M3 onto the A303 I had to speed up a little to pass a gaggle of cars. Once on the A303 I slowed back to ~65mph. Immediately got a bit of a rumble and vibration. I've had a UJ lose a cup before and it sounded similar so thought it was that again. Slowed a little, and umming and ahrinin over continuing the rest of the ~15miles without stopping. The rumbling and vibration were getting worse a lot quicker than I expected. Fortunately there is a service station soon after the join so I pulled in. Stuck the car nose in to a hedge (so I did not have to put the handbrake on) and went under the car to investigate. A little bit of play but nothing too bad. A little while spent wondering then around the car checking wheel bearings. The very last one to be checked looked like this: I've never had this happen before, all five nuts were nearly off What is really shocking is that I travelled no more than a mile and a half from the first indication something was loose, it deteriorated very very quickly. This wheel and tyre weigh 40kg and I really would not want to loose that!
  18. On mine all the loom and dash earths bolt to the bulkhead (engine side) near the steering column. On the 300tdi bulkhead I put in there was a small (M6?) stud sticking out.
  19. As the tensile looks fine. It is possible you have material with low ductility. Has it been hardened? Check the harness of the remains. Looks for defects in machining of the sample causing a notch and weakening the sample.
  20. Loads of B&Q/MAC/performance pro has expired on me eventually. All on power control/electronics not mechanical Grinder x3 Dremel copy Battery drill had to take a 9" grinder back unused as the drive shaft was bent and using it with a cutting disc would have shattered it!
  21. Have you tried working hard at 4000m, it is seriously difficult! Height sudddenly makes a massive difference to the amount of air around 2000m ~ 80% of sea level 3000m ~ 71% of sea level 4000m ~ 62% of sea level
  22. My experience with them is a bit mixed. Great website, with pictures, allowed me to find several odd bits and bobs whilst doing a bulkhead change. 1st order great all supplied in good time. 2nd order. Had a query as to compatability of part, email(s) never answered so had to wing it. Then it took a bit longer than expected to arrive. No response and a longer than expected delivery (site says from stock) set me back around 10 days.
  23. Whoops, missed a whole sentence out A few "spent" shotgun cartridges laying around in the dash may make them think twice. Esp. if you leave it parked up on a country lane when walking the dog etc...

  25. HIgh resistance somewhere. Shows volts but cannot deliver current. Check for corrosion on connecions/contacts and for chaffing on the wires
