  1. I was on Wikipedia and i read the following blurb on the Series 3 section In 1980 the 4-cylinder 2.25 litre engines (both petrol and diesel) were updated with five-bearing crankshafts to increase strength in heavy duty work. At the same time the transmission, axles and wheel hubs were re-designed for increased strength. This was the culmination of a series of updates to the transmission that had been made since the 1960s to combat the all-too-common problem of the rear axle half-shafts breaking in heavy usage. This problem was partly due to the design of the shafts themselves. (6 cylinder + Rover rear end = broken diff, broken axles). Due to the fully-floating design of the rear wheel hubs, the half shafts can be removed very quickly without even having to jack the vehicle off the ground. The tendency for commercial operators to overload their vehicles exacerbated this flaw which blighted the Series Land Rovers in many of their export markets and established a reputation that continues in many markets to the present day. This is despite the 1982 re-design (mainly the changing of the driveshafts from 10 driving-splines to 24 to reduce stress) all but solved the problem. Is that correct about the 10 spline shafts being upgraded to 24?

please show some pictures of your progress not many 80" about these days.
  3. A picture says a thousand words.... Can you show the finished article?
  4. Why don't you remove the steering wheel and fit two proportional switches (which have analogue outputs) that you press with your knees to steer it with. Free's up your hands to do other stuff......
  5. Is it worth the hassle of changing a 2.25 (5 bearing engine) to a 2.5 out of a 90? Or would it be better to buy a Stage 1 cylinder head from Turner Engineering and completely renew the ignition, carb and timing parts to get it running sweet as? Opinions please...
  6. When you replaced the cylinder head 3 months did you change any other parts at the same time?

Are the speedo cables interchangeable? I mean will the defender cable fit a series gearbox? But it does sound very simple to have to just change the clocks instead. What are you going to do?
  8. When i first read the title of this topic i thought you were going to fit 2 x 200tdi in your motor. 1 in the front and 1 in the back.

Will a Defender 90 or 110 dashboard fit in a Series 3 88"? If so does anyone have any pictures or tips?
  14. When i had a V8 110 1983 model like yours i had to double de-clutch every time i changed down as there was no syncro left it. These boxes take a massive amount of abuse before they die.
  15. Be sure to post some pics if you get it
  16. I ordered a bumper and new bolts for a 2a i was rebuilding a few years back. The bumper arrived but the bolts were metric. A quick phone call later then the next day a packet came with the right sized AF bolts and they said just keep the others for the hassel they may come in handy. Well i placed an order for £300 worth of parts. On another occasion i bought a new rad for my old V8 110 unknown to me some had soldered a fitting in the side for the kenlowe fans. When i phoned up and said there was a problem some guy (can't remember his name) told how to mod the top hose to get the fans working again. Excellent knowledge like this really helps out young people ( i was at the time) when they are still learning. That's customer service admitting their mistakes and helping when they can even after the sale. Thats whats required to make you go back there again.
  17. Sorry to sound dumb ..... What does the Panhard rod do?
  18. Isn't there some ECU control on the fuel pump? Can this not be chipped?
  19. A lot of it is down to what your knowledge base. For years my cars were modern Vauxhalls then 5yrs i ago i bought a 1963 2a. I had done engine transplants and conversions in load of modern cars but how the F...K does a carb work???? Needless to say i had a lot to learn about things older people take for granted. But at the same time i feel a lot more confortable working on a system with CANBUS than i do with a hundred levers, springs and cams in it. Know your own limits that's the important thing.
  20. I had it similar once on a 2.5 N/A diesel it was head gasket failure. But there could other problems that cause this. i would get the engine pressure tested first. IIRC Blue smoke = Oil Black smoke = Excess fuel White = Water But wait for confirmation from someone else.
  21. I just had a look at their price options and they are a very good price. I'm tempted at that.
  22. If you suspect a leaky hose it's an excuse to get some Samco Hoses......
  23. The only good point of having a hole in the foot well is for the water to get.
