With a laptop, couple of bits of wire, and a bit of freeware you can download off the net you can diagnose the system yourself for free. On that basis I can see no reason not to use it.
There was a thread on here a while back about it, and I have used it successfully on mine to re-calibrate it so it sits level after changing a couple of height sensors. (Height sensors were changed cos the rubbers on the linkages had perished and split, not becasue they'd failed).
IMHO air gives much better handling on the road, and the load levelling on it is simply brilliant!

It should have it at that age.
Why do you prefer not to have it? IMHO it is an excellent system that works very well.

Kevin at Kam's is a nice guy and he did me a very good deal on halfshafts years ago. Its a bit of an odd setup that appears to be run out of his front room and a barn over the way on the farm that its on. The impression I got was that it is run as a bit of side line to whatever his main business interest is.
However as they are a relatively small business, they tend to batch manufacture so if the item you want is out of stock it will remain out of stock until he orders another batch. For some of the older, slower moving items he also tends to wait until he has got a reasonable numebr of people waiting for an item before ordering another batch. The series rear halfshafts are a classic example of this. I bought the last set he had and he said he was unlikely to order any more. I beleive he has since run another batch of them however.
It doesnt help you when you desperately need something, but I can understand why he works that way!

No idea, but I know that re-build kits are no longer commonly available over this side of the pond.

D'oh! Meant to add that we also quenched the gears after welding to try and restore some of the hardness into them!

I've heard a few people say that the new clip on affair for the air housing is cr@p! Both mine are the older type that bolts on with 3 socket cap screws. It might be worth seeing if you can convert back to the older type housing.

Looks like Si was right then!
Tig it dont Mig it! You'll end up with splatter all over the gear teeth if you try and Mig it.
The input gears Tonk Tig'ed up for me never broke - suggest you get an adult to do it for you!

Oh my god.........
Barrs leak does NOT fix leaky waterpumps!!!! Its a horrible horrible get you home type bodge fix for a leaky radiator! It does not fix, and was never designed to fix leaky water pumps!
Pull your fan belt off and spin the water pump over by hand and see what it sounds/feels like. You'll porbably find thats the source of the orrible noise. Replace it with a new one. They are not repairable or rebuildable.
While you've got the belt off also spin the alternator over by hand and check for noisy breaings there too.

Sounds like a bearing falling apart or something like that. Does it go away if you dip the clutch and freewheel, or if you freewheel with it in neutral?

2nd gear synchro is the most common failure on these gearboxes in my experience. Needs a re-build and a new 1st 2nd synchro, and quite likely a new 2nd speed gear as well as the dog teeth wear. Surprised you didnt check these and replace if you had the box apart anyway.
Check the timing with a timing light, and also check that the vacuum advance is working. Timing it by ear is good enough to get it running, but it needs setting correctly.
Get the mixture checked on an exhaust gas analyser, but get the timing sorted first!
Pinking is usually cause by timing but could be a combination of timing and fuelling.

Another vote here for a 2nd hand snap-on one. I picked up mine for about what a clarke or halfords one would have cost me new and its vastly superior. Mine does not have the BB runners and its not a problem. IMHO you only really need them if you are loading the drawers very heavily. The large drawer in the bottom of my rool cab is the onyl one thats physically big enough to really need BB's but its fine as it is. You should note that there is a big difference in quality and smoothness however with a snap-on non bb runner and a cheapo non bb runner.
I also find applying a little grease to the runners every now and again makes the world of difference!

The one observation that I would make is that throughout the proceedings and posts on a number of forums on this subject, I do not recall ever seeing a detailed description of the accident posted anywhere. On that basis I dont think that any of us can offer an opinion on the rights or wrongs of the court case. We werent there, we dont know etc.
At the end of the day whilst we are all very sorry that he lost his children, as someone above said its up to the courts to decide if there is a case to answer.

:-) fastest its ever been was on the end of a tow rope with Tonk towing me home after I broke it!!!!!
-
One fo the ones I made up a while back (home done hacksaw, big hammer, anvil method) I later set up in the centres on Tonk's lathe and put a dial gauge on it to see how far out of true it was - less than 1/1000" as it turned out!!!
I've never bothered to get props balanced, in same way as I never bother getting my wheels balanced.
Jon

Yep - I used a standard swb rear prop and shortened it to suit.
Front one is also a standard landrover one shortened, but I'm not sure what from! Just find something thats plenty long enough and shroten it.

Mo,
I also have a rave Cd that covers this if you get stuck.
