  1. I have never heard of the timing chain breaking on a Td5 but like anything I guess it is a 0.001% possibility. Most likely cause might be somebody who has been into the engine and done something wrong on rebuilding it. Are you sure it is the timing chain that broke and not the chain driving the oil pump - this is a known fault and there is info on the problem elsewhere on LR4x4 if you do a search.
  2. Yes it will talk to the engine, no it is not talking the same dialect.... ECUs and injectors are different between 1999-2001 and 2002-2006 engines, the latter engines use a higher injection pressure and other differences and you will not get an early ECU to recognise the injector grades from a late engine. Do a search on LR4x4 for posts by user "Porny" who is a Td5 specialist as the exact differences have been discussed before and I think the info was from him. Basically it will probably run but not very well and you really need a post 2002 ECU to make it work.
  3. I agree, which is why I have a Defender
  4. Check out the tech archive forum on here I think there is stuff on changing head gaskets in there which will be a start for the info you need.
  5. Not all S2 Discoverys have air springs though, 5 seat vehicles can be either. Mine has lovely coils still working faultlessly, seven years later it still doesn't have a saggy @r5e in the morning
  6. Apologies to them then, I thought I read an article somewhere that said Ashcrofts developed it but credit where credit is due
  7. Between those two I would think they ought to know
  8. Cluckin' terrible. I mean everybody knows that dealers have absolute control over Land Rover prices and they listen to everything that their dealers tell them
  9. Ah ok sorry wasn't sure what GCC meant Ucked if I know then, sorry...
  10. I am sure you can do it, but once you get into using the D2 electronic autobox then you need the CAN bus set up for the two ecu's (engine and autobox) to chat to each other about the weather and when they might change gear, and probably once you switch the CAN bus on, the ecu's start looking for other ecu's like the BECM, SLABS, instrument pack etc so they can chat to those as well, and then if none of those other ecu's are there it probably all panics and starts emitting bongs. Other possible problems are that the gearbox ECU probably wants to know what the vehicle road speed is, which on a D2 comes from the ABS sensors via the SLABS ECU, and you won't have any of that fitted (well not unless you REALLY want a project...) and probably other stuff I haven't thought of. But this is all assumption so hopefully somebody who knows for sure will be along However I think the fact that Ashcrofts who do it for a living have settled on an alternative solution probably suggests it is a monstrous PITA to make it work. I wonder if Dave is around to comment on this?
  11. Technically I am sure it could but I think most people who have tried it have given up. Compushift from Ashcrofts is one solution, an old fashioned hydraulic box from a 300Tdi is another. The Ashcrofts have invented that wheel I think, I wouldn't be inclined to try and make it any rounder Might be worth talking to Lara on here not sure what he did but I think his souped up Td5 90 is an auto.
  12. One tyre option which looks 'kin fantastic, saw it on a vehicle a few years ago when I was over there, is 305/70R16 BFG's on 8.5x16 Compomotive AT alloys. Not cheap by the time you get wheels and tyres, but if you want it to look good....
  13. Ohh no it won't... I know of a Puma vehicle here with the "problem" which is configured as non alarm non immobiliser - as most are for this market. The switch off and leave it trick apparently works every time but there's clearly a gremlin in the works somewhere. The other one I know of with the problem is a County with alarm/immob. There is an obscure SSM (Special Service Message) covering it which for reasons known only to Land Rover does not show up when you do a search for it in GTR. Doesn't tell you how to fix it just tells you to advise the customer to switch it off an on again. Guess it came from the Microsoft helpdesk See here for a previous discussion http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=20692 the SSM is attached from Daniel Td5 who incidentally has asked for his username to be changed to "Daniel my Puma won't f***ing Start"
  14. OK well in that case it is probably running a 14CUX alarm system and maybe a 2 button alarm. If the answer to both those is "yes" (especially the alarm bit) then the spider post linked to above is relevant.
  15. Why not buy another one for £23
  16. It ain't for me and paying for such work to be done is likely to be expensive. May be the only option though. Will await reply from Devon 4x4, nothing today. Probably too busy on the Billing thread
  17. The proper way to do it involves measuring the piston protrusion accurately and working out the gasket thickness from that (detailed in the workshop manual I think) but yes I imagine you would need to allow for any head skimming. Yes the sludge is probably from the EGR valve. EGR stands for Extremely Gungey Residue
  18. Ah the good old EU Probably too much hassle and expense to get from the USA. More likely to be cheaper to get a new winch!
  19. Cheers- sent an email to D4x4 though there is no Defender version of the ARB on their site. They sell the winch though, so hopefully will know of something that will fit. I hate to think what the cost of an ARB one will be by the time I get it here though...
  20. 2 virtually identical threads have now been merged!
  21. Can't help you on the lift but in terms of ratios 37" are about a 28% increase on standard tyres which are just under 29" diameter so you need to lose about the same in your ratios. Whether you do this by changing the 1.22 transfer box to a 1.67:1 (which will leave it a little lower geared in high range but still the much higher low range) or a proper job and change the diff ratios is up to you. 37s on a Discovery are going to be an interesting challenge
  22. I thought PCD was different but maybe not then What about wheel stud diameter?
  23. I'd never heard of a 4.2 version so I haven't a clue Could you post a couple of pics of the engine bay so we can see if we can identify the EFI system on the engine?
  24. I very much doubt most people would consider it worthwhile because the easiest option is to pick up a decent second hand axle casing and swap the bits over, and it probably wouldn't be very expensive. No reason it couldn't be done (I think Hybrid_from_Hell on here tubed an axle case of his to provide extra strength) but I can't remember it being discussed on here. Now there will be a flood of people saying "Oh yes I did that" just to prove me wrong
  25. Very specific requirement to be truly useful, Coastguard is one and another common one is pulling cables through ducting for telecoms companies etc as you can use several hundred feet of rope with no problem. AFAIK you can't now buy a new capstan winch to fit a Defender as a complete kit (I tried to get one for a customer at work a year or so back) so they are probably worth a fair bit to somebody who needs one!! Superwinch used to make one, don't know of any others.
