  1. well, actually its alright'ish, best thing around here is the cops!

That's the most sarcastic comment I have heard from you ever! I got pulled by customs on the motorway once with my car on english plates, saying he pulled me because I drive with english plates and I dont look english...

  2. Also bear in mind that you can put a new rope of 125 foot of 9.5 mm on your winch quite easily, but this stuff grows in diameter over time. it probably measures 15 mm by the time you are finished with it. the 100ft of 9.5 bunches a lot on my ep9.

The shorter extension is keeping in mind that you need 3 rolls or more around the drum, 1 roll takes just under a foot plus you loose a foot for splicing the end. so if you have 100 ft of cable, you only have 96 ft of rope out of the winch. Hence, if you are in a swamp, and need to winch a long way, you pick over to the next 95 ft, which you can just reach. If you have a swamp that's 2 mile long, better hope there is a tree nearby, as with all the extensions, the spare rope and rope from the rear winch we had 950 ft in total. We never needed that much though.

  3. I did the entire RFC on 1 9.5 mm plasma rope, with a PTO winch. 10 days of hard off road and stupid hard winching more times than I care to remember, We cleaned and re spooled the winch rope every evening to make it last; The life of your rope is very much depending on this, and things like abrasion on rocks, past trees, double lining over a shackle are all going to reduce the life of your rope to hours.

We now run 11mm, as the speed of our winch has increased by a factor 4 and we went from a roller fairlead to a hawse style fairlead. This has reduced life of the cable unfortunately. But I would happily use 100 ft of 9.5 mm on a 9.5k low line. In fact, I still run it on our rear ep9. Plasma rope rules in my opinion.

I always buy 2 ropes, one as an extension with a loop spliced in the end, which also is a spare. For Russia we used winch webbing as extension, this is very compact to store. We had 3 x 190 foot and 2x 95 foot of extension. The lengths are based on 100 ft (as is on the winch) -5 ft, so you can pick over to the next extension with a few wraps round the winch drum.

  4. Not sure why you can't take a tyre of an alloy rim, are the beads that tight? I would ditch the rims for that reason personally. I have taken of tyres many times in the field, always from tubeless rims using a hi jack under the car. Carry a spare inner tube and puncture repair stickers. Make sure your spare tube don't have a 13 mm valve and your wheel a 9mm hole....I do remember one evening round the campfire with a round file trying to open up the hole.

a spare bleed nipple that fits in your master or a line union, so you can block 1 line in the system.

steel in a paste that hardens when you apply to a hole in a gearbox. Chewing gum to a lesser extend, but has saved me once also.

An electric system schematic, laminated. a paper one will wear or get wet, and will be useless.

A shorter belt that allows you to carry on when idler pulley, pas pump or waterpump has died (As mentioned, these should all be a1 before you leave).

wheel bearings with seals and a stub axle.

How can no one have mentioned the wholly grail of off roading and motorsport: tyraps and tank tape.

  5. I fabbed new footwells, 40 mm further forwards. the defender steering column is in the same position, the pedals are slid down the slope a bit, and the steering column is hard against the top sheet of the pedalbox.

I also moved the rr bulkhead back 3". The seating position is perfect with volvo seats, and I am 6ft7 also. The roof is 60mm lower total as well.

  6. What happened to co2 emissions? A few years ago diesel was pushed due to much less co2 emission than petrol. now the focus is Nox emissions in citys. They probably want diesel in the country side and petrol in citys, to bring down both co2 and Nox.

  7. An insurance company that has sense? Tell me who that is please, because I haven't found any as yet. Noone would touch me, except Flux, and they have an agreed value policy, which in their minds involves setting a ridiculously low value for your car, which you have to agree with.

It was a real downer to me, that after going to the trouble of getting your car legal, most insurers don't want to know. people that don't bother (almost everyone) drive an illegal car and have no problems insuring it. Where does that make sense, exactly?

  8. I think that's what the M16 washer are for.

    You answered the question already!

I use a wide bush axle, and narrow radius arms, with narrow bushes and a spacer at the chassis end also.

    titanium bolts

You could use wide arms with narrow bushes, just be a bit carefull with pressing them in at the right height.

  9. I presume you have the arms with the wide bushes? I suggest using genuine narrow bushes, with an ordinary m16 washer either side. This is what I run, front and rear, and i am very happy with the flex and the cornering. The whole void thing is a bit lost on me to be honest; your max flex is still determined by the inner bush touching the outer, and the narrow bush is much better in this respect already.

  10. The ratio is usually around that figure for the old series PTO winches. I think it will work ok, but slow. you can increase the speed by driving the pump from the crank, but it will still not be flying. By comparison, the milemarker aftermarket hydraulic winches have a 6:1 ratio.

    Hope that helps,
