  1. Ah, I thought that i could just change the whole of the diffcarrier... But thats no option then...

Must find me a front axle from a RRC then... and a rear from a defender and check for play before i buy...

Allso, I read the thread from discomicky...... think thats a very good way to convert to disk brakes...

I must say, i really like it here... its good to read so much knowledge and experience...

    Groet,

    Wytze

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

  2. Bit more of an update , well the customised bell housing has joined the M57 to the front of my LT85 , thats been the big delay getting the work done by machine shops !!! . I have just connected it all up ,there is just enough room length wise to drop the engine in between the front cross member and the front of the gearbox primary shaft, with the lt85 in its normal position. When bolted up there is about a 125mm gap. The big discovery was that the standard BMW 530d aircon pump wants to be in the space that the steering box occupies .So thats the next headache thinking where I am going to mount the aircon pump as Ive got used to having that extra bit of comfort in the 110. Tomorrow will be measuring and designing the engine mounts to weld to the chassis , as I want to keep the BMW active mounts . Looking back at your pics you have mounted the engine way back so obviously you wont have had the same problem . Still making progress now , thank goodness :i-m_so_happy: .

Time for a dedicated build thread methinks...

  3. Mine is, using the lt77 box and 230 transfer, with a 300 tdi and defender chassis/axles. Most people use landrover stuff because it is convenient, but Toyota and others are getting used also.

  4. AFAIK the stock fronts are 170lb and the stock rears are 225lb.

Which gives a pretty stiff rear end compared with the front when your F:R weight is 1000:800

I would swap them back to front to give good balance in articulation. It is close to what I run, although I have radius arms at both ends.

Certainly, if you run it like that, it is a very well sorted setup, except for high loads.

  5. qoute from the -landranger- saint:

I have a modified chassis  and if that mean's a 'Q' plate, I will not be chasing an iva.

That statement says it all I suppose. The problem with the q is that, because people dont like them, they will be hard to sell on if you decide to. Why? because people dont like Q's! its a retoric circle basically. One good reason is that it removes about 90% of the potential insurers that want to touch it, I found to my expense.

I had this discussion with Peter best insurance (Who i believe are not to be trusted, send me a PM and I tell you why): they basically would not touch it, since I changed to a q-plate. My argument was that the car previously was illegal and they would happily insure it, and now it is legal, they wont touch it. no logic there.

Another reason is that you dont quite know why it is on a q-plate from the face of it: Is it because it was an insurance write off that has been repaired, or is it because it was stolen, had been given a false identity, and then recovered and legalized by putting the Q on? or is it because it is build up from more than one car?

I do agree with you, I am happy to run it, because if it comes to it the bad day that awkward questions are going to get asked, you know youre in the right.

Maybe because I am foreign and havent got the negative preconseption of a Q plate that I am happy with it. Most people rather drive an illegal motor than face up to the hassle. It appears to be the least popular subject of any forum or magazine, even just talking about it puts people off. I wont say anymore about it therefore, there is always the PM.

  6. Some interesting stuff on the other thread there. The faster the water flow the higher the Reynolds number, so less boundary layer and better water to metal heat transfer.

But also, watts = mass-flow-rate * heat-capacity-fluid * temp difference. If the watts are fixed and the mass flow rate doubled, the temp difference halves. So 100 over 90 deg.c becomes 100 over 95. (assuming engine makes 100 deg.c and rad exits 90 deg.c). 95 is further from the ambient cooling air than 90, so the rad works better. So you get a double helping from a faster water flow. But the back pressure is the square of the velocity, so twice the flow could take a lot more shaft power?

Sure is a tricky one :)

from your post it only confirms my opinion that, other than being able to flow when the engine has stopped, I cannot see what the advantage is. I have only seen 1 application where there was an advantage: on a touring car, which had an alternator that would switch of the field on full throttle, so no power loss from the alternator. It did have a rather large lithium ion battery, which was fully charged at the start of a race, and flat at the finish. So any time you floored, it would drain the battery, but have about 1 hp more. In that case, ok there is a point, but on an off roader, leave it I reckon.

  7. those I linked to says tubeless, so there must be some from LR as those are genuine.

I gathered the tubeless reference, but I reckon they mean welded rather than riveted, so they hold air. But that is not the meaning of tubeless. It would be good if we could establish whether they really are tubeless, I personally doubt it.

  8. No, mine did not. Main problem is usually brake balance, but it is not hard to get right. Also, if you have rear seats, the iva is a lot more complicated than the commercial I'va, especially with external projections. I remember reading the sva book, and the difference between having rear seats or not equates to having 10 pages of rules and regs vs. 120 pages of rules. None of the rules are hard to comply with though, it is just all a bit involved. Daan

  9. Am I imagining it or did the boss of the company have a big accident and they stopped selling them? Or was that Dakars? Something to do with the brake balance and the fact they don't change it despite pulling half a ton of weight off the back end... sure I had a conversation with someone about it, but yonks ago now. Thought I'd mention it what with being safety-critical and all.

I seem to remember that someone bought a complete car from landranger, got pulled by the plod because of them questioning the legality of this conversion. It ended in the crusher, and the owner was fined 5K. This then went to court and the owners of landranger got done with community service for selling illegal cars (as in, modified and not informing the DVLA-VOSA).

This was obviously done to set an example for others. It prompted me to send my car for an SVA.

  10. Just got home from a trip to see a man about some parts, namely a 300Tdi engine pretty much bare, no manifolds or turbo, no alternator, no starter, did still have the head on it though, just!!!!

Price was €600 :o Said thanks but no thanks and was about to head for the car and spotted a set of early Disco 2 head lamps, asked "how much for these?" replied with "€120 but will do them for €100 for you!!" couple of stone chips that might/might not turn into cracks and generally grubby and dirty, guess what I told him he could do with them!!!

And yes no one was forcing me to buy them and no I didn't buy anything but moral of this for me is, why the hell do so many people think S/H parts are worth gold? The engine I can buy for €650 shipped from the UK with all ancillaries manifolds turbo, alternator etc, and the head lights I can buy brand new shipped from the UK for €135.

Anyone else got any horror stories of people trying to rob them for S/H parts when for a few pound more you can have new?

The clue is in the location: on the m

ainland, cars are exported to Poland Russia and so on which drives the price up. Here, because of the right hand drive, most cars stay on the island and cost penny's and so are parts. Anyway, top marks for sticking it out over there. Daan

  11. your landrover looks cool because of the dents; or so do my colleges at work tell me! i used fit new wings once a year, but now i am not doing much offroading, and i just leave it. I am not keen on challenge wings, and have thought along similar ways to yourself. it just never quite happened. looking forward to see your solution.

  12. Chaps, yesterday I drove and used the windscreen wipers, which then stopped at 12 o'clock (as in the position, not the time). minutes later, I drove over a bump and it returned to park again. I have seen this before last winter, and it always stopped in the same position. It pretty much sounds like the motor needs renewal/repair. Or can I replace brushes on the rotary commutor or something?

If I am to replace the motor, lr series shows that defender ones are the same as series, but I was under the impression that the angle they operate in is different. They also state right hand drive only, but I was under the impression that this would be the same (mine is LHD series).

Also, lr series give you the choice of 30 pounds for non genuine or 153 pounds for genuine. does the 30 pounds one come in a blue box?

So basically, can I fix it, or if I buy a new motor, which one to go for?

    Cheers, Daan
