  1. The shock hoops might move a bit but remember they are only for the damping on compression and rebound not to take weight so they are plenty strong enough and I'm mounted to pipes that are tied through the chassis and doubler plates on both sides

This may sound a bit negative, however, when you drive on a bumpy road, the forces put in by the shock absorber are actually greater than those by the springs as the shock forces depend on the speed of the movements. So if the speed that it compresses by is infinite, the shock effectively goes solid. On rebound, it is not so bad, as the force is only created by the springforce and the gravity pulling the wheel down. I would personally put a bit of triangulation in those hoops myself.

    Apart from that, great build!

  2. I dont agree with that; Years ago, I saw a trailer disconnect from a car, and hitting a pedestrian on the pavement. there obvously was a problem with the coupling for this to happen. something like this you wont see on a spot check, neither brakes that dont work. It might work for lights and tyres, but there is more to it than that.

Personally I think the condition of caravans and trailers should be assessed via spot checks. You are just as likely to have someone use the caravan just before the end of the 'MOT' as to have them do the 'MOT' before using it. Also the thin end of the wedge shouldn't be underestimated, first the MOT then tax.

  4. Normally, when you raise the suspension 2", you end up with +5" shocks with longer turrets to give you the right travel. I cant quite picture your setup, but longer turrets usually can be obtained pretty cheap. Coming to think of it, I have a set of tubular mat lee turrets in the garage if your interested. Why do you think you need double shocks? if you go OME, you wont need it I think.

  5. Some interesting comments. Not sure how this would be policed. At the present time the cops are using extensively the number plate recognition system to trace offenders. This is a very good system even from someone who had is car seized. (Incorrectly)

Caravans would therefore need separate registrations and that would add to costs and therefore road tax would follow to pay for it.

It ain't broke don't fix it.

In Holland, I believe the MOT for trailers has been around some time. more recently, the trailers also do have their own registration and tax liability. But I don't think the UK is going to this extent, unless the EU requires it. You see, there is more sense in the uk government than there is in Holland. Before you all start shouting at me, Holland takes it to the level of legalizing drugs so you can tax it, and it just wont happen here.

Tell us more about your car being seized :SVA go away:

  6. Thanks Nige, but gee was it only yesterday that you posted this? I've already been kicked off 2 other 4wd forums for supplying your and Daves evidence that ARBs are carp, to Ostriches (head in sand and all that) that refuse to acknowledge the facts! And these were on threads that I didn't personally start !

I've only got here and Pirate left, as I've burned all my other bridges over the years. I must be a stubborn disagreeable son of a gun LOL.

    Bill.

Bill, the main reason we appreciate your posts so much is that you bring the truth, and nothing than the truth.

    Keep the truth coming!

PS: Although I have yet to prove your experience of Detroits being garbage.

  7. Dont see the need , the majority of accidents involving a caravan are instability issues , seeing as the purpose of testing is a road safety initiative its not going to achieve much. How do you test the brakes anyway , 99%+ are overrun , so a rolling road wont do it , and neither will a tapley as that will be measuring the outfits overall retardation? The components will for the most part be unseen , as no dismantling allowed on test . The only thing that you can really assess is hitch sideplay , and see if all the lights work . so end result a lot of messing about + expense for not a lot of result .

    like this:

Also, how many trailer don't have the lights working properly?

  8. Hi Mcmud, I know this post is meant to get an idea of pricing, but if it turns out to be an advert, I would like to move this to the for sale section, which requires prices when it ends up there..

Following the comments on here, could you put these parts up for sale in the correct section? Even better would be the sell & support LR4x4.

    Cheers,

    Daan

  9. Yep - that's what I meant; the type you see on Rogue Traders and such, preying on OAPs. Sorry if I offended the rest of the industry with a badly written point!

Rogue traders are in every area were there is money to be made, in any country or county.

I dont think you have offended anyone here, apart from the rogue traders!

My view on the world from a realistic point of view (and a realist is an optimist with experience).

On a more serious note though, if you want a mint series, I would just look on Ebay; the last time I looked there were some really nicely done series with a galv chassis in a near new condition for about 10K. That is still cheaper than pay a company to build one.

  10. For about 9 years I had a mod 1 trialler, it started life as 80" on std rover suspension, then I stretched it the 86" and converted the back to run radius arms its climbing ability was transformed.

I put this mostly down to the increased antisquat, followed by wheelbase. And thinking about it the lack of roll steer probably made it feel lots better as well.

Agreed, that is exactly the reason why I run radius arms. Despite the reduction in articulation, the stability in hill climbs and side slopes makes up for it. You can't beat wheelbase for climbing ability though. And keep the weight low.

  11. I have looked on Honest john in the past, and the figures here are pretty much correct with my daily driver.

Interestingly, the Defender comes out as one of the most accurate consumption figures from the factory, with figures recorded from the public being 105% off that from land rover (generally it is more like 70-80% of quoted figures):

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/land-rover/defender-1984

To put things to the test, my daily driver is a polo 5 bluemotion, and I get 64MPG on a tank, which is exactly what Honest john comes up with. Fuelly records an average of 46MPG.

I cannot achieve that, no matter how I abuse the thing, so I am a bit puzzled how these people get their figures.

Shame is that honest john doesn't show figures of the early disco.
