  1. I'm surprised no one has mentioned a windscreen wiper motor.

Again, all the advantages of DC drive (infinitely variable, reversible etc) and a big speed reduction built in. And cheap from a scrappy!

I have actually seen windscreen wiper motors used in industrial machines.

What I thought, in combination with the mentioned 12V train controller will give you all you need.

  2. I am hearing a lot of negativity in this thread, people not agreeing with landrover's publicity campaigns etc. However, things have changed from the old days and you have to move on. The new range rover is not neccesarily my cup of tea, but for a lot of people, it is. As also mentioned before, for us to buy a used land rover, someone needs to buy it new first, and if that doesn't happen, our hobby is bound to end.

And the result of all the corporate stuff is this:

Money talks, as they say, it is a british carmaker, employing thousands of british people that does incredibly well. Give them some credit methinks.

Ps., It surprises me this has to come from a Dutchman!

  3. All down to personal taste and your driving style, I've tried manual and auto and the only box I haven't broken so far is an LT95 ....... slow and agricultural on gear change but very strong.

Sheared the mainshaft out the back of an LT85 once didn't think that was possible but it happened in the middle of a punch

Good effort! Goes to show that you can indeed break anything.

  4. Oohh and I've blown up an auto so not convinced by there reputation

    My point.

Come downhill in 1 st gear and you have engine braking.

You can bump start an auto if you tow it fast enough, not fun though. Or just carry a spare starter - we do.

    I don't think they're any less reliable than a manual sorry :(

    G

no need to apologize. Main reason for me is that most of the retirements in Croatia trophy for example are because of auto.

  5. Why manual ? Drive an auto before you dismiss the idea. A lot of trialers and challenge trucks use them. Don't know your wheelbase but mine is auto in an 88 with engine back about 6".

    G

Reliability would be my main concern. I understand the advantage of an auto giving more control, but if you go one step lower on the diff ratios, in combination with a diesel (tdi, or similar). The control will be fantastic. A v8 is completely different, and probably warrants an auto, but in terms of reliability, diesel with a manual wins hands down. Its not just the gearbox, but if your starter is down, you cant bump start an auto, so thats the end. then you have going downhill with an auto, which can be pretty scary. In my humble experience obviously.

You should definitely make the move from landyzone to LR4x4. Absolute load of numptys over there.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

  6. Hi Carl,

It is possible to remove the roof, but its not practical. What is practical is replace the rear wheels for a set of old rims or fit some low profile tyres to a set of 2 rims. I used to go for the rim option, gives some stripes on the concrete, but otherwise ok. the slope on the front bit of the roof was perfectly horizontal with the rims on the rr axle only.

It also depends on the size tyres you have obviously.

  7. Hardy Ha

We had all this long time ago, and I took it to the Guikldford weighbridge and it was no where near as heavy as peeps think.

Now truck cab with 52mm CDS Cage vs Hardtop and BS1353 48.3mm Thick wall cage :) ....springs are lighter ratings than before so it weighs LESS :P

Yes I know in the old Hybrid Jon White collapsed laughing when he found a 35mm x 10in x 10in square lump of steel under the cuibby box as a "Lifter"

.....but I'm not like that anymore :P

    Much ...

    Nige

Dont the wheels weigh about 30 kg each (x5)? But you have more power now....

  8. Daan no the throttle body isnt being operated like on a petrol,

it is only there if it diesels on basically when the diesel engine is running on it own oil can happen when its been on its roof or other source of fuel not from the injection pump carbon build up etc, basically revs till its blows, youtube it loads of videos

what this is being used for is, if the engine does diesel on you can pull the throttle body shut and stop any air getting into the engine so it dies saving it from self destruction.

    muddychris300tdi

compressor surge does sound pretty darn cool

I understand why you would do that, the dieselmax landspeedrecord vehicle did have this setup as well. But judging from the sound, that does sound like a turbo hitting a wall, with a dumpvalve opening maybe? It shouldn't do this on a diesel I reckon, and it only means throttle response is very bad straight after this.

  9. all my 20tdi new air filters come with a new seal, the TD air filter has a clip together housing, no wing nut os seal.see page 561 on my last link above.

    300tdi & 200tdi wingnut & seal are the same.

see the brit-car link it shows the wingnut & seal under the same number, seal comes prefitted to the wingnut

The sealing ring under the wingnut is included in the 300 filter as well. The o-ring between the two halves of the air filter housing is not however.

I did visit the Ridgeway landrover dealer for some genuine parts, and asked about the o-ring.

The long and short of it is that the o-ring is not available, unless you buy a new airfilter housing.

The answer to my question what they do if the o-ring needs replacing was: 'we never replace them'.

It was the usual dont know/dont care approach that annoys me of these people, it makes look landrover bad, and this partmanager clearly doesn't want to excell in his job.

Anyway, I got the correct O-ring from my local engineering supplies, Rapid engineering, an o-ring 4x160 is a perfect fit.

  10. One interesting thing is that they're running a throttle body in-case of run engine run on, seems there chucking alot of fuel through that 606, and what looks like a hx40/ maybe a hx50 at my best guest,

Also Daan that noise is compressor surge, as long as its a good turbo and it looks like a holset then it will be perfectly fine

A throttle body on a diesel? Thats what gives him the noise of the turbo hitting a brick wall when he lifts the trottle. To me, that means it destroys the characteristics of a diesel, and it becomes power only at high revs. If thats you want, just get a v8 petrol.

But what do I know about engines?

  11. 'Off-road' suspension seats are not like lorry ones... your 'suspended' between the frame base rails on elastic webbing rather than a solid base with foam on top of of it (std Defender ones for example). They have limited movement but don't transfer as much of the bumps & knocks to the driver/passenger. With regards to approvals by other bodies outside of the UK (MSA), look at any Ultra4 buggy, rock crawler, rock bouncer or trophy truck..... you'll find most, if not all run a suspension seat and prob one from PRP.

With the limited space in a truck cab, seat rake & height to get your knee's under the steering wheel are a larger issue.... not so bad if your making a custom seat box but can be a PITA for the standard one. The OMP's posted above look a good seat esp in the wipe clean vinyl, the low side bolsters would make entry/exit easier without loosing too much lateral support.

    Just my 2 c

But isn't that how any car seat is done these days?

I haven't tried this seat , it dont look to me particularly special, maybe it is if you sit on it, but I reckon the head support would miss my head by a countrymile, but that is just personal I suppose.

I think they're a pain to get out of as well, which is what you do a lot in challenge events.

  12. I have also replaced the seatbase for a custom one, which is flat at the top. As you say, the rake in the seatbase is a problem, because most seats already have rake in it. I needed to loose height, while maintaining the under seat tank, so the flat top seatbase is a must. I am 2m in height, or about 6 ft 7 in christian units, hence being quite specific about it, or I wouldn't fit under the roof.
