  1. For your use, I would use a 200 tdi, with the turbo, but with reduced fueling from the pump. That is the only way to achieve better mileage and reliability. Basically let the engine run part throttle all the time, rather than full throttle without a turbo. it will last much longer that way as well.

Also run high gearing and good intercooling, that will give you good results I reckon.

  2. I think that triangle joint at the bottom is not a very good design for a few reasons:

-big hits from a front wheels are not being tranfered to the chassis as you would like, it is trying to rotate the axle and bend the triangle.

-the roll centre is at the lowest point, meaning it will lean in the corners (and sideslopes) very badly.

I would have links to the axle in a straight line and a third link on top of the axle, offset to clear the engine. Then a panhard or watts linkage at the front.

I did read the banter on the pirate thread about a KOH car that had it like this, and worked, but as usual, there were no solid arguments to explain why, like it works because such and such, but just that car worked so its a good system. Maybe the car worked because of other things, but there wasnt much informed knowledge going on there. Internet chat at its best....

  3. I'd also nominate the cagework thread for Fridge Freezers 109 http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=69697 and DirtyDiesels cage work on his .... errr... almost a land rover :)http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=64430

I think it would be good if all threads from, say fridges 109, from over the years are getting merged int one big 'fridges 109 thread'. That would save a lot of searching if you remember a detail from that car. Adrian, your car should definately be moved here.

  4. I think it is more that you aim at a controlled 4 wheel drift, so that the rear wheels effectively steer a bit. In reality, i dont think it matter much, with the c of g that high, most of the load will be on te outside wheel, so the inner wheel wont do much, regardless of what position it is in. I think..

  5. I would say that the volvos have managed to use conventional ackermann with the track bar up front, as the track rod end is further out than the king pins.

There is nothing wrong with a single ended ram system, they are just unfashionable :P

You should be able to package a track bar and a single ended ram above and behind the axle.

I much prefere a track bar and single ended ram set up, no need for the extra complication of double ended for the vehcle speeds and steering responce we see.

I would still try to fit a double ended ram, because of the difference in assistance between left and right. Also, if you go full hydro, there will be a difference between the amount of turns to lock going left and going right. Alternatively, you could go with 2 single ended rams, which could even be single acting. I hadnt realised the mog had exagerated Ackerman. My take has been so far that parallel steering is best, because you get the best turning circle, because usually the inner wheel is the limitation. Off course on a unimog, that is not the case.

The whole not being able to steer thing has never really occured to me, since I have the detroit setup, which contrary what most people tell me, is completely controllable when offroad.

  6. I do agree with the forum policing bit, people somehow like to stick holes in other peoples pride. Its not just here, on devon, some very expensive builds have been shown off, in particulary the one by rob butler. Things didnt go as expected and the car had a few failures. This got a lot of badmouthing, eventually rob pulling the thread.

So its not just here, or just the SVA chat that does it. Equally, if will warn does an update, most of the time is spent talking about how long it takes. It puts people off, if you hit them at their weak spot, and i find it disgusting myself, knowing how hard it is to keep motivated. So yes to the custom build forum, and no to the SVA police and general keyboard bashing.

  7. As an example; if someone were to post up asking about full hydro steering above 90% of the replies would be concerned with its legality and the Iva. Ram selection, mounting solutions and Ackermann would be buried if they were even brought up at all.

Agreed with this to be honest. But, the people that were writing their stories, like Jez did, have now mostly moved on to things that dont involve offroad comps. Family, households, well you know what I mean. I havent done a comp since 2009 myself because of all this. People that write on Devon are mainly new to the scene, i never met them and they choose to write on devon because thats were the comp guys are hanging out.

But if I google anything landrover related, 9 out of 10, I will end up here again, so there is still a lot of info around here.

  8. I reckon the open cored rad is hurting you. The expensive way is obviously the allisport or similar one. But I would have a look at modern OEM ones, they are aluminium, with the plastic tanks crimped on. They are very effective and lightweight. I bet a large enough one like a 4.6 rangerover will do you. I am sure there are now people shouting that the plastic tanks could split, but pop the bonnet on any recent car, and you will see they are all like that.

Also, are you saying that it overheats at decent speed? You should only need fans at stationary or low speed IMO. I have spend quite a bit of time in the past to seal the air path between the grille and the rad, to make sure all the air that goes into the grille also goes through the rad. Polystyreen foam and tankape are your friend. Then you have the problem of air bleeding out again. It may be good to have some bleed holes in the bonnet, but you probs have that already.

  9. I cant fault Stable fabrication in Towcester; although there name suggest differently, they have invested heavily in CNC turning and milling equipment in recent years. They do a lot for motorsport, which means they will be busy this time of the year, but between march and september they will be less busy. I deal with them a lot through work.

Speak with mark (MD) or Bob. Tell them I send you!

  10. Here here. Not everyone has the means to transport their cars, and you can carry the parts for potential show stoppers. I do know this, because I have done this all my life, where ever I went with my landrover.

So Boothy, we have to agree to disagree.

Putting a slightly different angle to this: Some of the best offroad events in the world do require exactly that: no trailers allowed and a roadlegal car. So this could become one of them. Count me in.

  11. I think, with the current way, only 1 foot in the EU, and not in the Eurozone, the uk, Czech, switzerland and a few other countrys are going to be asked the question: in or out? That will probably become a referendum, to which most uk islanders say no. And that will be the end of it. Or so my chrystal ball tells me.... :P
