  1. I have done a few test drives in mine, including the one that dirtydiesel did. These days I just ignore what people say about them, even you Nigel!

To be fair, the car is understeered with the power on, but I am completely used to it now. Interestingly, although people say a detroit locker in the back makes the car understeered, this is not the case; It is the Detroit true trac in the front that does this. When I once removed the front prop, you dont notice anything, as Dan says you would never know it is there.

  2. Awesome offroad!

I have been to peterborough... once. but have been to billing almost every year I can remember, so no guesses what I prefer. And it is not just that billing is 40 minutes up the road. This Landrover mag show war thing thats been going on is not helping anyone. I think they should just drop all their shows and let live promotions organise an independant landrover show in billing.

Tuned 4.2v8. I've broken a lot more which isn't pictured. Front & rear HD shafts, ARB's / pegged diffs, crown wheel + pinions, drive flange bolts, props, steering boxes.... The list doesn't stop. The sooner i get the new one built on non landrover axles the better !

    What brandhafts are they?

  4. Honestly Daan, you should know by now that mechanical sympathy is considered cheating! And it's nowhere near bling enough.

I reckon the real answer is fit a 2.25 N/A, 7.50's, 10spline axles, and a good winch to do the hard stuff.

Done plenty of cheating, but still broke other components...

  5. The forever ongoing question; standard landrover axles break so need upgrading, toyotas also break but not as quickly (Although some people say the CV's pop just as easily). However, you are in for a lot of reengineering to fit anything else. If you are ok with that you can swap for something different, but I have seen plenty of people having a go at this that shouldn't. This is not so much a problem for a trailerqueen but if you use it on the road, there are peoples lives at stake. Especially the brakes might give unexpected results, so be carefull. Than you have things like buying new wheels etc.

I never bothered myself, and run 35" simex with ashcroft shafts, detroit diffs, kam R&Ps with standard (old type) CV's. No breakages since installed in 2003. Touch wood and all that. just be sensible when you drive and youre ok.

  6. Thats the big question; I dont know the answer, unless the manufacturer gives an input torque, you cant really say. You can only measure the pull and relate this to pressure and make your conclusions from there. Bear in mid there is a lot of other things going on in the winch @ 8000lb, it is very hard to predict the outcome. Out of interest, what made you decide to go Hydraulic, rather than mechanical? I cant see much advantage, unless it is an engine driven pump which might give you a bit more speed, but at 1:48 ratio it will never be fast.

  7. All a bit flash if you ask me.

    -mr conservative hat on-

I have an idea, use the defender binacle. Yes, thats what everyone has got, but I still think thats a great bit of design: a simple piece, complete freedom of clocks in there (not one car has got that as far as I know), and the endresult looks, well finished and really neat. It must be the cheapest dash ever produced for a mainstream car, and it looks perfect for the job IMO.

Ready to receive a LOT of flaming... :P

  8. explain then Daan

I always drive assist while winching. The winch is not quite wheelspeed, but not miles off like a conventional PTO winch (Which is 1/5 th of the speed of the koenig). If I didn't use the wheels, the plasma cables would never last as long as they do now. Also, while winching from an anchor, you are unlikely to have enough of holding force to pull the car out by the winch alone. I use the early x-eng anchor with great succes.

  9. This thread seems the ideal point for you to give your experience of international recovery Daan? Sorry to bring it up again...

Recovery was not nessecary in this instance. Being it in europe, it wouldn't have been a problem. Recovery from Finland is a different matter, and takes about 4 weeks! That is without the recovery from outside europe, which officially never happened...
