  1. hi you could try bleeding any air out but i wouldn't hold out much hope, could also try putting a pressure gauge in the cooling system to see if it goes above 1 bar to eliminate a fault with the tank cap not sealing. But it does sound very much like a head gasket failure. matt
  2. hi just a quick thought are you getting max throttle on the injection pump when your foots to the floor ie is the cable adjustment right. my only other thoughts are what condition is the air filter in as it now seems to be lacking air at full throttle as you have black smoke and have you checked the timing if its injecting to late then there may not be sufficient time to ignite and burn all the fuel. hth matt
  3. hi i have a similar set for work about a year and a half old they're used every day and sometimes on the rattle gun haven't had a problem yet, good quality and very good value at that price imo. matt
  4. hi the current part no according to microcat for STC1279 is SEE500140 and you will need two, one for each caliper LR series has genuine for £36.24 each HTH matt
  5. i got the 3/4 drive version from difflock a bit expensive but well made and does the job. luckily i all ready have 3/4 drive for work but adaptors are cheap enough from halfords and the like, still has the hole to put a bar through if you wanted. matt
  6. hi just had a quick look at the Quo mapping software the only free bit is a UK road map like on Google maps to get OS mapping you have to pay and it seems more expensive than memory map, i haven't got any electronic mapping at the moment but once i get the landy finished i will look at running a touch screen with memory map. HTH matt
  7. hi to check the UJs grab hold of each side of the joint and try to twist back and forth any movement means a new cross should be fitted, the sliding joint in the middle can be checked in the same way any play means a new prop. Have you checked that the bolts that hold the prop to the diff and transfer box are all tight as these came loose on mine and made a clunking noise as described. The other place to check is to remove the inspection plate on the back of the transfer box and look for play between the gearbox output shaft and the transfer box input gear. HTH Matt
  8. hi they spray similar stuff over the engines of new tractors that come from the states the best way we found to get rid was steam cleaning and traffic film remover HTH Matt
  9. hi it depends what pressure the co2 is stored at, welding co2 is usually supplied as a liquid (get more in a cylinder) and is identified by a vertical white line on the cylinder. This shows the cylinder has a siphon tube this type of cylinder has to be used with a vaporizer before the regulator and gauges or as you found out the gauge freezes blocking or destroying itself. The pub gas i think is at a lower pressure and still a gas so shouldn't need a vaporizer but you might get icing at higher draw rates. HTH Matt
  10. hi i would have thought you would need to do it electronically on a td5 with another potentiometer to send the right voltage to the ecu, either that or a suitably weighted stone matt
  11. hi it could still be the battery as if it is completely flat it will take all the charge from the jumper battery and still not start better to charge the battery as western says then try again or swap it for a known good one. if you put a multimeter across the battery and then turn the key the reading should not dip below 10v if it does the battery's flat or dead, if it doesn't change at all then you have got an earthing problem. HTH Matt
  12. hi it should be ok as long as the switch is suitably rated for the max fan current, i would also put a fuse rated to less than the smallest wire and the switch as close to the battery as possible. HTH matt
  13. hi i would also change the rubber pipe as it breaks down inside prevent fluid getting back from the slave cylinder HTH matt
  14. hi Porosity will usually show up on the surface of the weld as the gasses try and rise through the weld but don't quite get out before it solidifies if you want to check the penetration on a test weld you need to do a macro etch test The other test you can do is a nick break this is only for T fillet and lap joints this is where you cut the center 50mm out of the weld then cut part way through the weld towards the weld root next using a hammer and vice break the remaining part of the weld. i have added a diagram to try and explain it CO2 will give better penetration but the weld will not look as tidy the arc is also slightly less stable when on pure co2 compared to argoshield HTH Matt
  15. hi you could try marshlands or richards chassis to see if they would sell you just the mounts as they probably got boxes of them for the production line HTH matt
  16. hi i have been following this with interest as the standard headlights on my truck are poor to say the least and i've been looking for replacements . From the regulations that have been posted the only bit that might cause a problem is the self leveling bit, for example when the load in the truck varies like with a trailer on. I'm not sure how the new vehicles manage to do this T1g up mentioned the lights on his vw cycling when first started it is possible they use electronic gyroscopes to sense if the car is level then use that to set the head lights but this would be expensive for an aftermarket kit. i would be interested in the response from DOT matt
  17. hi i would have expected all the readings to be fairly similar like 1,2,3 so there may be a problem with no 4, have you tried adjusting the tappet clearances and then re doing the test before its stripped down. if its sill the same then i would be looking at the valves and their seats rather than rings unless it's burning oil. Putting a small amount of oil (tea spoon) in the bore before doing the test is a recognized method you will get a higher readings and if you get the same results as before its most likely to be the valves as the oil helps to seal the rings. the only other test you can do is a cylinder leakage test which involves pressurizing the cylinder using an airline with gauge attached then listen in the intake and exhaust manifolds if you can hear air escaping its the valves if you listen to the crankcase breather and can hear air escaping the piston rings are leaking. A small amount is expected but if you compare for the four cylinders it will be obvious if one has a fault. hope this is of some help Matt
  18. hi i bought this Clarke one a year ago and its been good making life easier, some of the time you need to crack bolts off first with the breaker bar but i didn't expect it to as it was bought mainly to save time running bolts in and out e.g. sumps, timing cover etc. The battery lasts about a day of on off use but you get two with the gun so hopefully you will always have a charged spare. HTH matt
  19. hi the solenoid does need to be connected as when it is energized it pulls the plunger into the solenoid body, through a leaver arrangement this engages the gear with the flywheel. At the end of the plungers stroke it joins the two large contacts on the end of the solenoid supplying power to the motor HTH matt
  20. hi a permanant 4wd drive shouldnt go on the rollers like a normal car at all as when you spin up the front wheels half the centre diff is sat still and the other is spinning at full speed and the little pinion gears are running at twice that speed. very quick way to kill a centre diff, i think on defenders there is a notice on the fuse box cover that says this. HTH matt
  21. hi it sounds about right at rigid all the way would crack due to vibrations, you could try changing the pipe just make sure it is rated for ATF fluid hth matt
  22. i have draper expert at work repairing ag machines and havent broken any yet they also have the hex on the shaft for a spanner to apply some extra leverage matt
  23. hi if you remove the oil filler cap when its running does it blow oil out the rocker cover, this would indicate the rings are shot or the head gasket has failed (though much less likely) matt
  24. hi A) the turbo pushes the air through the intercooler into the engine. This cools the air making it more dense and therefore getting more oxygen into the cylinder, so more fuel can be added giving more power. i think there is a slight drop in pressure between the turbo output and the inlet manifold but not a lot. if there is lots of sharp bends and restrictions in the piping this may cause lag but i don't know how noticeable it would be. HTH matt edited because i didn,t read the question properly
  25. hi have you checked the relays and fuses i think some cars use at least two relays and if one failed that may be why you have one setting still working HTH matt
