  1. I found this on a Ford Mustang forum, of all places.... The MOT testers manual does say however that post 1st Jan 1965 you must have "A belt which restrains the upper part of the body (but need not include a lap belt) for each seat". http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_510.htm Presumably they mean the outer front seats.
  2. I'd be wary of using second hand speakers - the foam rubber surround that supports the cone has a life of about ten years - after that they just fall apart. I've had a similar problem with my '98 Rover 800. In the end I just bought new speakers and adapted them to fit the Rover enclosures.
  3. If it were me, I'd want the seller's head on a plate
  4. If the seller described the car as tax exempt, pre 1972 etc. then he was misrepesenting the goods. The buyer is entitled to compensation from the seller - as long as he bought it after 1st January 1894, which I presume he did. Sale of Goods Act, Sect. 13 Source
  5. I can see this all ending badly. Wasn't there a 90 going cheap on Ebay recently that had suffered this same fate? IIRC the seller had bought it in good faith but it turned out that the thing was made up from parts from different sources and the only pre 1972 parts on the car were the number plates. I think the DVLA had refused to give him a new reg number. I'd be inclined to consult my local Citizens Advice bureau about the possibility of getting my money back from the person I bought the car from.
  6. The example vin is supposedly an 1980 XJ6 - but they didn't make a 4.0 litre XJ6 in 1980

    New leafs

You did fit the springs under the front axle?
  8. Tim Another heated screen supplier here Tamworth, so possibly nearer to you.
  9. I don't think the body scores any points at all on a vehicle with a separate chassis. From DVLA web site.... Scoring components The following values will be allocated to the major components used: chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points suspension = 2 points axles = 2 points transmission = 2 points steering assembly = 2 points engine = 1 point
  10. I did two nights in Las Vegas and it was two nights too many. I'd spend two weeks in Moab if I were you.
  11. I've got no problem with that. In the circumstances, and in fairness to the bloke concerned, I think it was the right thing to do.
  12. I think that was a completely different incident where a guy flipped a Disco. Incidentally, you don't need anybody's permision to publish photographs of anything that can be seen from, or on, a public right of way - including faces and reg plates (with certain exceptions like military instalations etc.)
  13. I can second this comment. I had a similar problem with a Rover 800 and the EKA procedure would not work until the battery was at full voltage.
  14. I'll grant you that the sunken lanes that are characteristic of some counties were created by years of erosion caused by wheeled vehicles. However, like it or not, churned up public highways are, in this day and age, unacceptable to the majority. In fact, they probably never have been acceptable to the majority. Richard James, at Heywood in 1636, wrote… “"Our ways are gulphs of durte mire, which none Scarce ever passe in summer without moane"” A hundred years later another traveller described the roads of south Lancashire as "the vilest roads, a foot deep in mud, with ruts and holes in which a sheep might be hidden" In days gone by there was no alternative to poor roads and travellers had no option but to use them. These days we don't have to use the lanes, we do it for pleasure. Because we do it for pleasure, not out of necessity, it could be argued (and is) that the mess we make is unnecessary and disproportionate to our numbers. This is a very strong argument for those that wish to ban us. If we want to carry on with our pastime we need to give the antis as little ammunition as possible. Like it or not, muddy, deeply rutted lanes are perceived as being ruined. By intentionally driving a soft surfaced lane during, or immediately after a period of wet weather you are actively supporting the antis' campaign to close the lanes forever. Don't do it.
  15. Yes you did, you wrote it down! (I started my post before yours went up - but SWMBO insisted I eat my dinner ) The Ferrets I drove had a five speed pre-selector together with a forward/reverse lever. Rear visibility was mirrors only and the steering wheel was upside down so I doubt anyone got into top gear going backwards!
  16. Yes, it is possible. Citroen used to do it, they called it C-Matic, you had a gear lever but no clutch pedal. I suspect there are others. Some Honda autoboxes are essentially a manual (i.e. not epicyclic) box with a torque converter and electronic control. The 'dump clutch system' you refer to sounds like a 'pre-selector' gearbox where you put the gear lever in the gear you want next and it only changes when you press the gear change pedal (or button). Some buses use this system (or used to). It was also used in some wheeled armoured vehicles too. It's wierd until you get used to it. Having driven manual, C-Matic, pre-selector and full auto I can rcommend the latter!
  17. Excellent! Very good choice of music too. Runrig, The Cutter & The Clan, if I'm not mistaken.
  18. Commercially available biodiesel shouldn't hurt your Land Rover. If you would rather use it on environmental grounds I would think again. Currrent production methods have been linked to large scale deforestation as well as increased hunger in the third world.
  19. Sorry, the 86" rear props are the same length as 88" rear props. 86's use the same length prop front and rear.
  20. Hear hear! It may be no accident that the number of abused lanes seems to have increased in line with the growth in popularity of the internet.
  21. I use Starret blades. They cut well, last ages, and I haven't anything bad to say about them. starrett.co.uk
  22. This is a very sad case. I don't know Gresh, I didn't witness the accident but it has certainly made me think. I'm normally a quite reserved kind of bloke but I think now I won't think twice about voicing my concerns if I see something I consider unsafe. If the guy concerned, and all his mates, thinks I'm a total arse then so be it. At least my concience is clear. Now, I've just got to find the thread where the guy is repairing his chassis frame with 1.6 mm sheet
  23. If you are looking for info on good practice when installing seat belts then the SVA (apologies to the ostriches on here) manual is very useful. Download the 2004 version here For what it's worth, in my opinion that Ebay bar is good for what it was designed for but, as it stands, it is not suitable for mounting a centre three point belt.
  24. The Titanic sank - and that had watertight bulkheads. I'll get my coat!
  25. If it is that wet then surely it would be sensible to leave it well alone until it dries out a bit. There is some very good advice for green lane newbies (and others) here
