  1. it's only the top bracket that holds the two together.
  2. .......only if all four wheels are on the ground, with equal forces acting on the wheels of both axles
  3. An axle with a locked diff is just a single solid shaft. Consider a turning shaft, such that if you were to grip each end with one hand it would stop. ie you have overcome the torque available. now consider gripping the shaft at one end, but with both hands. will it stall? yes. the same torque is still all thats available, its just been used in a different place. torque is directly proportional to resistance to rotation, at a constant speed. if torque is greater than resistance, the shaft will accelerate, if it is less, it will slow down/stop. i think... Luke
  4. Torque is turning force, the engine has only so much torque it is able to produce. Considering a landrover with all three diffs locked, and three wheels off the ground. the three wheels in the air require only a few Nm to spin them, the one wheel in contact will take all the torque it can to rotate the wheel, so that wheel will be able to produce say 95% of the total available, the other 5% turning halfshafts and wheels that are spinning in air. Torque is going to be at a maximum/minimum under acceleration/braking or gradients/boggy ground when rolling resistance is high. Consider a LR with both props in place, accelerating from 0 - 60, the same LR accelerating in the same time with only one prop still requires the same about of torque, so this has to go through the one prop.
  5. I can get them down to the suffolk/essex border if that helps them along the way?
  6. you can hold the grips and the ratchet in the same hand If you dont' hold the socket still, as the nut tightens up, it spins the socket, which spins the rivnut, which then doesn't compress as its spinning. Also, the thread on the M6 bolt suffers a bit, i got through two bolts inserting 6 rivnuts. worked for me though, and a lot cheaper than the £80 ish tool Luke
  7. Yup, the rivnut is only threaded in the bottom half. As you compress it, it deforms just down from the shoulder and grips. Any single nut attempts i made resulted in the rivnut spinning, and no compression. Luke
  8. I've just done this sort of thing putting external door hasps on. Using M6 rivnuts (or nut-serts) and M6 machine screw. I wanted to came up with a way of doing it so the rivnut didn't rotate, to that end, i threaded a 1/4" socket onto the bolt, as well as a nut, a couple of washers, and then the rivnut. When i tried it without all that, the rivnut started to rotate off the bolt. holding both the grips and the ratchet still, turning the spanner clockwise compressed the rivnut without rotating it, job done!
  9. Halogens look slightly blue, so i would have thought the blue of LEDs would be acceptable, i doubt anyone would get arsey over it. the benefits of them illuminating faster, and not blowing when you soak them, have got to be an advantage. Luke
  10. Sorry, should say i'm far too skint to fork out for a manual! thanks for the site though.
  11. Is the bottom one LEDs? light looks more blue, compared to a slightly yelllow top one?
  12. Does anyone know where I might find an online workshop manual for a 406 1.9TD? I've got to change the rad in my dad's and it looks simple enough, would be good to find out if there's anything to catch me out. Cheers Luke
  13. The halfshaft lengths are different side-to-side, as the diff isnt in the middle, and the fronts are shorter than the backs as the fronts have the CV and stub axle on. Any use? Luke
  14. Agree with Motorhead, the keyboard is currently set as a US style keyboard, you need to change it to English UK. go to 'Regional and language options' then click on the languages tab, then the details button, then set the language to English UK and add a UK keyboard. later you can delete the US one. HTH Luke
  15. Just ordered one from Adwest, and the courier is picking the old one up on delivery.. Luke
  16. Cheers Si, Adwest Re-cons are £212, after you get your 50 +vat surcharge back, a new adwest is £334. other re-con prices are around the £100 mark, i guess you do get what you pay for.... not got the time to look for a second hand one, as i've got to get the 90 through its MOT, and then get back to uni for the end of next week, and ive got two outriggers to change, and a rear xrember to errrrr knit back together. Thanks, looks like i'll give Adwest a call. Luke
  17. Already posted this on the defender board, but figured that most people need a steering box now and again..... Does anyone have any advice on steering boxes, either new or re-con? I would reckon Adwest are the best, as they are OEM, but obviously they are more expensive. Does anyone have any comments on any of the other remanufacturers? Cheers Luke

  19. Have you got room to fit an air tank in somewhere? That way you could fill it over time using the ARB compressor, then be able to quickly inflate the tyres by emptying the tank. Increased wear on the ARB compressor, but i wouldn't think it would be anyore than inflating the tyres directly, and it would depend on what pressure the ARB compressor will pump to. Luke
  20. I know of a 200tdi running with a Janspeed exhaust, not a single silencer along its whole length, and it sounds like a tank, much nicer than any silly V8!
  21. And...err... could someone fix the double posting ? !
  22. I can see two boards leading to confusion. I know i'm not a huge poster, but i certainly enjoy reading everything thats going on, whether it be Landrover, Mog, zuki, waxoyled cat, whatever, it's all interesting stuff. I prefer the functionality and feel of LRA, and only visit LRE to check. If the archives can be extracted, i see no need for LRE to remain...... another 2 p Luke
  23. My PictBridge printer has a seperate female type A socket on the front of the printer so the camera's own USB lead can plug straight in, maybe there is a second socket on yours under a cover or something? Luke
  24. http://www.tomcatmotorsport.co.uk/ Might be able to help you out Luke
