Hopfully someone can help. i need to make a frot wich mount for my defender, i want it to sit ontop of the chassis.
oly idea i have so far is to use a 6-8mm plate and bolt it otop of the chassis, using the 4 normal bumper holes and make 4 new holes along the back of the crossmember, and bolt the winch to that.
but how to make, how to mount fairlead ad what to do for recovery points?
how it is now, i dont want it sticking much past the end of the chassis.
Yeah landmannnn that notch was terrible so gave up, the second one had probs max 1mm gaps.
bluespanner i used this program (nicked the link off here somewhere) and used a grinder

Can anyone give me some advice/tips on welding tubes together please? this is my first try today at notching and welding, its 45mm OD CDS 3mm wall, need some practise before i attempt my challenge wings.
cheers
Got a capillary gauge on mine, in the thermostat housing. 88 degree stat, even tho it says 89 on it. opens about 95-96 degrees then sites just below 90, with no fan and a rad you could happily watch tv through.
sorry marcus, bit of a misunderstanding, i should of explained myelf better lol.
i dont mean fixing the tube to the roll cage socket. i understand how to do that, i mean joining the 2 main wing tubes at the end, the tube on the left, with the bend in it, overlaps the socket, so im wondering what people have done.
hope that helps?!
yeah alot of fab work, its just a pile of tubes. i dont want to weld anything to the front hoop socket or i wont be able to remove the wings in future. im just asking how people have mated the 2 tubes together.
When i did mine, i changed the fly wheel housing and added the 4 extra allen bolts to the bottom, the disco engine already has the rght threaded holes to take them.
Has anybody fitted p&p challenge wing kit?

and how they compare to the north offroad ones, obvisiously alot different as you just get the basics, but alot cheaper.
my idea would be to dismantle the standard wings into the top and outer skin and cut them to fit the tubes, retaining the standard defender arch and inner wing and trying to save as much money as possible.
Next time you drive it, touch the rear hubs/halfshaft drive flange. the bit in the middle of the wheel anyway. if they or one is very hot then wheel bearing. I'd get it jacked up as soon as you can before you do more damage.
Here's a couple of mine from afew weeks back. this was done with a kerr. my own fault really for not digging it out! but lesson learnt
1 snapped and one bent trailing arm. one snapped prop and a crushed damper.
Thats crazy. the show "west coast customs" or something like that was on discovery last night and it was the one where they made the stormer! It was orange when they finished it.
Basically you should have 3 washers in total for the lower mount. 2 big slighly concave ones and 2 smaller, thinner ones with lips on.
red arrowed (the big ones) first one on the shock first, then a bush, then the smeller on, the small lip is desogned to sit in the shock mount hole. then its the reverse for the bottom, so small one, bush then big one and finally the nut.
on the top with britpart think you have to use the washers that came off.
