Troll Hunter
Good morning, All, As in the title. I'm stripping down my 110 CSW for full rebuild and I'm sure there are forum members who have faced this tin worm challenge already. What are the options and recommendations for repair, please? Can the outer, curled over top, be separated from the major channel section? Can the B/C post be separated from the horizontal sections? Many thanks in advance for the bigger brain thoughts. western
A friend & myself replaced the sill channel with 50mm x 30mm x 3mm rectangular box section, had to drill 2 holes at the rear for the bracket to underseat cross member & cut off the original bracket to bulkhead & reattached it to front end of new box sill, had to cut a access hole in underside to fit the 2nd bolt of bulkhead bracket, bought some plastic cappings to cover the hole & rear end, been on my 110 now for about 6 years. the B post spot welds were drilled out & B post was reattached with some seam & puddle welds. YRM can supply the P plates for fitting the lower door seals.
Troll Hunter
Thanks for the details, Western. Since nobody else has responded I assume that this is the standard procedure. I'm considering welding a mild steel 10mm rod onto the new box section instead of using YRM P- sections. This would be a lot cheaper for me, freight being the major cost. I'll update on how I get on. western
you should be able to source some matching diemension U channel in your area, I don't know how others have used to replace their bodyside channels, the threads for the floor plate screws at the outer edges are drilled & tapped directly into the 3mm thick box section. Peaklander
Here's a few pics of my sill channel replacement. I found the B pillar to be a bit difficult - at least the spot welds that are accessed from underneath on the inside. This is the B pillar: The YRM replacement...
Troll Hunter
Thank you, Peaklander, for your input, it gives me more ideas and options for repair. I may just grind/sand blast the area clean and puddle weld the area and then grind the required profile. Or, I may just say to hell with it, and fill it with JB-Weld! Arjan
Hat off - you're a brave man ! CSW's are not the easiest to restore. Did a 109 many moons ago and I still have nightmares from it.. Prefer 3 doors... But you seem to be doing very well ! Bon Courage
reb78
I just cut out the rot like that on mine and welded new metal in. Where it was rusty on the 90 degree bend, I gently formed the L section in a vice out of flat sheet. You wouldn't notice to look at it.
