Stellaghost
Some progression this morning knocking up some bits and pieces for my spare wheel carrier Bracing Receiver slide Some 10mm plate cajoled into shape with heat and a BFH one locking bolt welded on pipe end for slider more to follow regards Stephen
Stellaghost
More Opposite bolt fitted, but first a small extension that will also be braced Final piece of bracing at pivot point, Previously made piece of curved 10mm plate Yes I know the above looks untidy but I need room to take tub bolts out, once I'm finished it will have a nice removable cover to hide the nastiness Wheel hoisted into position again some rolled bar at different diameters Tacked into position you should be able to see where im going with this now, wheel still needs to be fixed in the down/load position so I can lift on the wheel to pivot into position regards Stephen
FridgeFreezer
For a bit of contrast I was just chatting to a chap who'd paid significantly north of £1k for a custom spare wheel carrier and I don't think it was a well engineered as this (and it definitely was not holding anything as beefy).
Stellaghost
That's enough for today, thinking time required with some assistance from the forum I hope From where I left off Welding and blending Stud holder Winch assist Wheel in the down and load position, by the way I can also sit on it.......tried it out..... raised open Slots into locking position champion with any drop of which there is little assisted by the idea from @bishbosh So now the thinking and forum assist time, looking to lock the front A to the back A good and tight, I have some ideas in my head but you guys might come up with something better Regards Stephen
dangerous doug
Just a thought, you could weld in another hoop to the static aframe and reeve your rear winch rope for lowering and lifting the tyre with little more work. as for the latch, you can have a piece of spring loaded tube slip over the pivot bar with a cam or pawl cut in to it that you slide back(under spring tension) and as soon as the tyre is free it’ll remain free until the carrier is stowed away again. Like an auto lock

At the moment I can lift it into position manutroniclly....lol, wether I can do that in another 5 years remains to be seen, definitely going to rig something up so I can use the rear winch, I had not thought of using the static bar was thinking more in line with using the top bar of the roll cage with an additional loop welded on, I will check out your idea Thank you Regards Stephen

Bowie69
A sheet of stainless on the back of the tyre and you've a nice place to sit for lunch/have a cook-up
muddy
How about a length of threaded bar just like the standard landrover spare wheel holder where your orange strap is or even a bit of bar with a hook shape ground in and a drop latch of the wheel half of the carrier so it auto latches. I would prefer to have the locking mech around the top point for maximum strength and ideally clamp the two together to take any wapp out of the job. Ed Poore
It seems a bit unnecessary if you have the rear winch but those boat strap winch things are available cheaply on Vevor. https://uk.vevor.com/hand-winch-c_11873/vevor-hand-winch-800-lbs-pulling-capacity-boat-trailer-winch-heavy-duty-rope-crank-with-33-ft-steel-wire-cable-and-two-way-ratchet-manual-operated-hand-crank-winch-for-trailer-boat-or-atv-towing-p_010179972258

We are thinking along the same lines, using threaded bar I was considering making a long wing bolt to tie them together, I also don't want 63kg flapping around Regards Stephen

Ed Poore
I did think that'd be the case given you're trying to save weight. Out of the box suggestion but can you incorporate the HiLift? After all they can be used as winches.
muddy
nice bit of M16 with some stainless 10mm bar winged off the top for the handles.
