Bigj66
I have a Superwinch with a cast alloy housing which has cracked in the usual place where the retaining bars are fitted. Does anyone know a way to repair these? Can they be repelled and then drilled out? Failing that are those bars really needed if I’m running a dyneema rope through a fair lead and could I just remove the bars and tidy up the broken corners with a grinder? Tim2809
Yes they are needed to stop the tops being splayed apart and gears running out of alignment. As for repair I wonder if an engineering place could weld and re drill it
Tim2809
Also believe you can buy that plate separately from electric winch shop or Goodwinch could probably help aswell Edited September 5, 2019 by Tim2809 Added info
Bowie69
Was going to say, I am sure you can still get parts to replace the broken bits. You need the tie bars so the bearings don't run out of true and bind/get hot.
Bigj66
Thanks chaps, will contact Goodwinch.
miketomcat
Yes they can be welded and re-drilled, mine has. As above definitely needed although I did look at fitting a plate on mine in place of them but got it welded in the end. Mike
FridgeFreezer
Bugs me they don't put a bit more meat around those... if that part is a separate section it might be an easy job on a lathe or mill to make a better one out of a bigger lump of ali. The TDS version is bigger there. Mike
qwakers
i cut a plate to go around the motor and under the feet to take the bolts rather than repair the casting. worked a treat.

Do you have any photos of that?
qwakers
doubtful, it was a very long time ago... it was just a bit of flat plate with a motor sized hole cut in it, holes for all the mounts drilled, cut it half to get it on the motor and welded together then a flat plate welded to it across the bottom. then another piece of flat drilled for the other end of the winch so it sits level. Snagger
You could try soldering with that special solder for big aluminium parts, but given the stresses on this part, I’d have it professionally welded.
miketomcat
If I remember correctly that solder stuff makes it very difficult to weld afterwards. Mike
Bigj66
The parts are still available from Goodwinch so I’ll just replace them.
FridgeFreezer
From the looks of how crusty that was I wonder if alu corrosion didn't play a part in bursting it open? Wonder if a bit of something in there on re-assembly might make it last longer.
Bigj66
Goodwinch have some decent second hand parts so I’ll send it off to them for a service and rebuild whilst I get the bumper blasted and powder coated.
