monkie Posted November 9, 2022 Share Posted November 9, 2022 I usually frequent the Defender forum, but on this occasion I'm asking for a friend. A colleague of mine has a 2018 Discovery 5 with a 2.0 Ingenium Diesel engine. It has been off the road for a few months due to investigations at 2 independant Land Rover specialists of sudden stopping of the engine and a knock from the engine. Now the car will not attempt to start at all. There are no fault codes being given, the battery has been replaced, the engine can be turned by hand to rule out seizure and the immboliser has been checked (I have no precise details on the checks to the immobiliser). The lights will come on on the dash, but when an attempt is made to start it all goes dead. Any insights to what this problem maybe would be very welcome as I have zero experience of this engine. monkie Posted January 25, 2023 Author Share Posted January 25, 2023 An update incase this is helpful to someone in the future. 2 faults have been found by a specialist in York. 1 corrected, the other is terminal. First fault which was stopping the car from starting was traced to the removal of a tracker (we have to have a tracker fitted to our cars we use for work). Whoever removed it completed 90% of the work but overlooked one thing that caused the none starting issue. The engine now starts and runs but is awfully rough (somewhat improves as it warms up). This has been said to be a known fault with the 2.0 diesel ingenium engine (I don't know precisely what) but the engine is not economical to repair and requires replacement. HughPD Posted July 4, 2023 Share Posted July 4, 2023 I have a D240 2020 Defender and until my last trip loved the vehicle. I was on a trip of 13,000Km. I was towing a small van for a lot of the trip. Part way through the trip I noticed it was using oil then 2,000km later stopped! I took it to a LR dealer to investigate and was advised nothing wrong just "Check the oil in 1,500km". I checked the oil in 500km and again using oil. Over 5,000km used 8.5ltr of oil Took it to local LR dealer as now starting to loose power and what appeared to be silly alarms coming up. After review they determined a loss of compression in two cylinders and a replacement engine is required. None available so now without a vehicle ( no loan cars available) until the engine is rebuilt. Now a sour taste in my mouth, is it going to be reliable, will it make it to the next 54,000km as this is how for the present engine made it. D240 2ltr engines do not appear to have had the inherent faults fixed, shame as it ruins a brilliant vehicle. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If I get more details, I will add them. Hi monkie Any update? I've a Jaguar xe r sport with the 2.0 diesel Ingenium. 2017 car with 60k miles on it. I bought it under a year ago. In 6 months, the engine mounts went. After that was done, it never sounded the same - engine sounded a bit like a tractor. Then ... I got that knocking noise from the engine. Intermittent and I could only notice it on low idle or low gear. I'm interested to hear how you got on as it's the first time I've seen someone mention a knocking noise. All others I have read in the various forums mentioning whining. I've had it looked at and there's mention of the balance shaft, maybe the bearings. I've no idea and not mechanically minded. But I've managed to get it back into the Jaguar dealer as they are going to look at it and may do a goodwill fix, not sure yet. So what was the upshot of your issue? It was looked at by many specialists, in the end the conclusion was a new engine was needed, it seemed to me that no one really came to a firm conclusion on the precise cause.
