So we now have a D2 in the family….

Recommended Posts

Here goes,

my son brought a 1999 V reg d2 TD5 auto yesterday has a few problems,

1 no interior lights front to back,

2 central locking locks all doors but will only unlock drivers door and boot door,

3 where’s the automatic gearbox dip stick guessing if there’s one it’s under the black engine cover?

Thank you.

There's no dipstick for the auto transmission.

A popular mod. Is to fit the transmission sump pan and dipstick from the P38 Range Rover.

Cheapness from the factory? 🙄😊

thsnks 👍😊

1 - no interior lights : Switch setting front light / naff door switch(es)

2 - central locking : Press remote once and driver door opens, press again other 3 doors open, press again and rear door opens

Setting can be changed with nanocom / hawkeye

3  automatic gearbox dip stick : none

Only the early P38 (before 1999) have a dipstick for the ZF. The later ones don't, just like the discovery.

Just not really needed on a vehicle regularly serviced by a garage.

It’s a Land Rover 😂

So chances are it will be put through its paces for far longer than the original gearbox fluid will last. 😉

Yes, what I mean is that for the first 10 years of users, it will be serviced by a main dealer and therefore not an issue anyone at LR really cares about.

So going back to interior lights absolutely no power at lights them self on off or in between

guessing the car has a 10 AS box?

Discovery 2 doesn't have 10AS, its electrics are set up in no way the same as Discovery 1. Pretty much all vehicle ancillary functions are handle by 2 control units. One is the BCU Body control unit, which sits in the passenger footwell, and another one which is called the IDM Intelligent drivers module which is integrated into the fuse box drivers side below the steering wheel.

The BCU/IDM both control the alarm/Immobiliser type functions. - the BCU in this case controls the interior courtesy lights.

Its common that both the BCU and IDM are in the firing line for getting water/damp in them, especially if you've had any roof/sunroof leaks... especially the IDM it has lots of plugs on the back side of it, these get corroded and can cause many differing symptoms.

If you have a Nanocom I know you can manually switch all the functions on/off of the BCU to check things like interior lights etc. Other than randomly checking the odd thing or just swapping out control modules you really need to find a computer to plug it into.

I good easy start is to pull the BCU and IDM and open them up clean/inspect them.

There are also some good manuals out there for the D2 electrics etc, have a trawl through the Tech archive, theirs a good one which is called D2 - New Discovery Technical Brief, outlines all sorts of useful information.
