Making roll cage clamps for seat belt mount.

Recommended Posts

I want to put my truck cab to soft top and I need some seat belt mounts. I have a rear hoop and that blocks many of the off the shelf options.
So looking to make some clamps for the vertical part of the 1.5 inch cage with a part that extends for award for seat belt mount.

suggestion was 8mm plate with a good helping of high tensile bolts in a saddle clamp arrangement.

What  does it take to safely bend 8mm steel plate into a saddle bracket ?

I think 8mm is way excessive, 5 or 6mm would be plenty strong enough and easier to form, although 6mm plate will still take some effort.

With patience you could hammer form something by having the vice jaws open and hammering the bracket plate into the gap in stages until you form the curve you need, then clean up with a flap wheel and paint, heat would make the whole process even easier

The IVA manual states capable of taking 1.5 ton. I've seen seat belt mounts that are a nut welded on the back of a 3mm plate. The ibex has threaded plates 6x25x50mm ish welded to 3mm wall box. You can use a threaded boss welded into the cage but it must be welded both sides.

The weld in bung would mean moving the seat belt reel so it’s more inline and the belt runs straight up to the mint but that’s ok.

Need a weld in bung that fits 1.5 inch cage.  Which I imagine is around 40mm long?

Whatever makes it easy to have a bolt in there with enough room to swivel.

I'd probably go 5+mm each side just for ease of welding.

Could be an easy cheap solution

Just a comment on strength requirement for seat belt mountings. I once chatted with a design engineer at Autoliv. He said one M8 bolt was plenty strong for a seat belt mount. At the level of force needed to break that, the body the seat belt is designed to protect is broken. I.e. you are dead (internal injuries) well before the M8 breaks.
