Mallory distributor for a V8

Hi there

Has anyone tried upgrading thei distributor to a Mallory Dual point distributor. My 82 V8's distributor is on the blink and RPI rekkon the standard dissy is inefficient & unreliable and highly recommend the Mallory. Seems good but is a tad pricey.

Does anyone have exeperience with the "Lumenition" electronic ignition ?

Thanks a mil

RPi are stuck in the 80's still selling Mallory dizzies and Weber carbs, I'd take anything they say with a pinch of salt, especially when it's some expensive bit of clockwork that they're trying to sell you.

I dunno how much a mallory dizzy is these days, but depending what's wrong there are options of varying cost to sort different problems - Ranging from EDIS with either MegaJolt or MegaSquirt, to £25 for a GM ignition module to replace the stock amp.

Sorry to Hijack but does anyone have a conversion/fitting guide for making a efi dizzy work on a carbed setup, Trying to sort out a timing issue on a friends 90 and the points seem to adjust themselves, the front adjuster is very easy to turn. We have a complete efi v8 with range rover to match and would like to get rid of the points alltogether.

If the sort of long hex nut thingy sticking out turns "too easily" it goes into a fine thread inside the dizzy and this can get easily chewed, net result is the settings don't hold and it resets itself where it fancies, had this years ago on mine, the gap similarly check cond of base plate.

The V8 90s had basic carbs and EFI Type dizzy, you'd need the dizzy, then the coil pack and amp that goes underneath and then connect the wires between which has special plug amp end, then the other wires to fire it all up which are minimal, you can't just pop the dizzy on without the amp :(

Have a complete range rover with all the amp and wiring and coil so bits aren't and issue, just wanted to make sure it was a fairly simple unbolt old bolt in new and do a bit of wiring.

Yep

If you have the Dizzy complete, link lead to AMP Coil pack and then the AMP & Coil pack yer there !

Just do check the dog gear on the bottom of both dizzys they can be different if really eraly, but can be swpapped over by knocking retaining pin out- most likely they will be the same :)

The mallory ones are bluddy awful things! If nothing else points are a PITA, and with a dual point there are two sets to go wrong!

Either fit an electronic one off of a later rangie, or do away with the dizzy altogether and fit edis and coil packs.

Thanks Jon. It can be tricky to find info in South Africa - we don't have the specialists you have in the UK.

Forgive my ignorance, but perhaps you can answer the following:

1. Is it fairly easy to set up edis and coil packs with a Weber carb ?

2. Do I go original or is there something aftermarket that's decent ? Can you ercommend a vendor ?

3. What do I do about the oil pump drive from the existing dizzy if I go with edis and coil packs ?

4. I think I have a Lucas 'Opus system 35DE8, is this interchangeable with 35DM8 or 35DLM8 ? I assume the 35DLM8 is the best ?

THanks amil

YEs, edis is easy with carbs. You need to run megajolt lite - theres plenty of info on the website if you need it. ONly thing thats hard to get hold of (in the UK at least) is the edis8 module. Everything esle is easy. If I was doing another V8 i wouldnt consider anythign else.

I just left the old dizzy in place to drive the oil pump and just took all the HT leads off. Some others have cut the top off of a spare dizzy for a neater look. You need to retain the bottom part to drive the oil pump as you suggest.

I cant answer your questions on the lucas systems but someone else might be abel to!

Blatant plug: I have EDIS-8 units for sale :P

How much are they now (not that one is tempted or anything you understand  )?

On a more general note, what's the reliability of these units like since they're the hard parts to souce in the UK (that is, if one was to buy one, if one was hypothetically interested of course ...)?

Why only swap the dizzy? Get the EFi on there too yer luddite! :P

Saving the spare engine and EFI stuff for a rainy day(Month)to strip down and check through but need to get the 90 running fairly quickly so getting rid of the old points system and having something slightly more modern on might help. Also its not my 90 so someone else is in control of the budget, silly person putting a v8 in, could have had a nice tdi running and sorted easily by now (Runs for cover :D )
