Guest WALFY
When I met my wife she worked for NFU. We then moved to Kent. Moved our insurance elsewhere, but we seem to keep going back to them. We now live in Wiltshire but still deal with the office in Somerset. So you don't have to use the closet office
geoffbeaumont
youve got all the ones i have spoken to (if you add nfu - which is selling Norwich Union products IIRC) in the past. NFU policies are underwritten by their own underwriters. I take it that you have a limited milage policy. less than 5m a month . So really your insurance is quite expensive All NFU policies are unlimited mileage - guess that might well mean they aren't competitive on a 'toy' truck, but they're good value if, like me, you clock up over 20k a year. Anyone like to share a NFU Office / Name / Phone number of the better ones who know a V8 from a Spinner than ?West Sussex / Surrey / Hampshire It isn't important whether the NFU office is local, only that it's a good one - they're local franchises so vary quite a bit. I live in Birmingham but use the Thirsk office as they were recommended by a friend - very helpful and everything done over the phone. Only mod that ever caused me any hassle was the Megasquirt on the Range Rover - took them a while to get an answer from the underwriters, but they eventually came back and okayed it with no additional charge. Kev Baldwin
Another vote for NFU here, although local office's will always have to go away to talk to their underwriters with regard any mods. In my experience advertisers who claim to be 'LR specialists' are anything but. When I did the ring round when insuring my 130, two didn't even list a 130 'on their system' and another was very puzzled when I told them it was diesel powered when all they had showing was a V8 petrol option for the Defender on their computer. That's any Defender! "I can assure you they've made quite a few with diesels!" Of course, you only get to this cul-de-sac when you've spent 15-mins waiting for someone to answer and then spent 10 mins going through the compulsory inane Q&A session that obtaining an insurance quote involves these days. Adrian Flux were cheap when I had a serioulsy modified Disco and when I needed to claim for a new w-screen, it couldn't have been any painless. However, when I swapped to bog standard spec 130, Flux quote was £150 more expensive than NFU and more expensive than my modded Disco. Go figure?! discojmz
as someone mentioned above, because we have the house, the farm, all the farm vehicles and the cars with NFU we get regular home visits from one of the partners from the local office to discuss 'our needs' and any ways of getting the premium down, all sorts. now if that's not a personal well tailored service i dont know what is! I certainly know who my business insurance will be with in 6 months time! plus my pretty basic car insurance policy was 700 quid or so for my 3dr disco 200tdi. i was 20 at the time with 3years NCD but that was fully comp, 3rd party to drive any other vehicles at all, european cover, trailer/horsebox cover up to £1500 i think it was. car contents cover, and basic breakdown cover (easy and cheap to upgrade package), plus some other bits i cant remember. oh yes, it's insured still when it's off road, and not that i have any radical modifications at all, but i was told that they wont have a problem with purposeful mods at all, anything particularly bonkers would also be ok if proven safe (engineer's report etc) but i got the impression we were talking really bonkers there. Coastcard
Nige, Shorterm Direct are my Scorpion . Advice would be to not take the policy out until you receive the details through the post, as what they put on their adverts and gabble down the phone at you may not be the same as what turns up on your doormat, especially with regards to mods. and useage. If you try to change it afterwards, they will fleece you like a lamb to slaughter. I must say I have found Adrian Flux to be both knowledgeable and helpful, also for stock vehicles (not yours!!), the Post Office were great value and surprisingly efficient. Chris Rogers
I'm very young, so this might not apply to you! Tried to get insurance with adrain flux for my 1992 defender 90 HT, the chap on the other end of the phone said ' you're trying you luck mate - i'd be impressed if you can get a quote under 2k for that..." needless to say i then managed to get a policy with elephant for just over £500 - rather cheap for a 19 year old. Think i may give the NFU a call for a quote when i'm up for renewing the policy though!
Hybrid_From_Hell
Ho hum and onwards : Thought I would give an update or 3 so far, ................ some of these insurers really are dreadfull They say they are specialist, but frankly they have not got a clue, the monkeys on the switch boards don't listen and ask a range of stupid questions which they ask even when you say hold on... then after 15 mins "Oh No we can't insure you with a external rollcgae" or Worse you mention a modification and they say "a snorkle - does that increase the performance"...somehow you just know you are wasting your life talking to them....... but your in for 15 mins ....so go the whole hog.... My findings so far for what they are worth.......... Sureterm Direct Hopeless. Before they even started it was the "whats the cheapest quote you have had so far" ....... my retort of " How about you answer my question 1st" was met with stunned silence, "But I need to know if I can beat it", "Yes, but 1st I need to know if you will insure it"...and so on, still awaiting a quote.... Adrian Flux Amazingly arrogant, difficult to deal with don't listen and phones manned by idiots, "its a 4.5 V8 Rover" was met with "I only have 4.0 4.2 and 4.6", "no its a Rover 4.5 made by John Eales" ... "Oh so its not a Rover engine them"....... "yes it is" "Oh, well whats it out of then" "A Dillydo Gt Daydoda Sport Coupe 4x4" met with silence..then a "I just don't have that listed"... but the classic from the specialist was "Petrol or diesel" Gave me a quote but the 4 page detialed Modifications report was not enough, they wnated a 2 page modification report completed, but would only send it to me after I bought the policy, .............and the price was only valid for today. I suggested he stored it in uranus, ..............pause .............................then he said "We record our calls you know".. "Well thats handy as you haven't listened so far you can play it back for instructions"..... got a quote - £385 HAHAHAHA and any mods £25 even if "No not allowed" Hopeless Glynwood Kept coming back for more and more info, bit out of depth methinks............. still no quote Footman James Too heavily modified Sir, .......... Lancaster Insurance Anyone here with them ? If so look out. I have been told 2x (didn't belive the 1st time) that ANY off road use would mean the insurance is INVALIDATED under their T&C as they ONLY insure LRs for road use only, greenlanning was a grey area, was told no, then I pointed out "is part of the UK Road system and you have to be taxed and MOT and insured" she said they would "Take a dim veiw" of this sort of use as its really off road. She pointed out that as I have a winch I would likley recover off road even if not competeing in an event and that would INVALIDATE my insurance policy ie on my way home even though on the road due to having been off road its invalidated the insurance. She asked me if I had any other questions. When I asked "if she had dogs on her planet" the phone was put down on me ...if you are insured with these muppets I would get insured elsewhere............. pronto Peter Best Still waiting ho hum, Heritage Insurance Hopeless Graham Sykes Got a quote just feel uncomfortable as to what they understood, have sent the e-mail of mods heard nothing back......... Firebond ...........A Classic Call - Full Page advert on the back of a Magazine but are "Closing Down Sir" ? WTF Yep, they have closed, gave me a number to ring....one of the ones above I was about to give up and then I looked at the AWDC Website "Roadsure", specialists in 4x4 modification etc etc etc - heard it all before. I phoned up, explained I had a list of mods of 4 pages would he like it e-mailed ? "Yep, do it now, then when I have done the basic Questions I'll have it to look at" Christ - thats sounds almost sensible................ Ping......... Meanwhile Name address DOB owner garaged etc ...............and then to the mods. Eales V8..... twin winches...... caged out front internal rear - "hold on sir........" "I have the mods here...just come through on e-mail..." "Hmmm yeah, hmm ok, ooooo, aaaaah, whats Megasquirt ? - (quick Chat), Mmmm, ok, yeah....." "Fine" "Er, what do you mean fine"? "As in they are all fine sir" "Eh ?" "£271.34 Full Comp - if you want to mod further during the year ring me directly I will check with insurers if OK, and there is no charge for that ref is XXX valid until mid feb ish but just ring me back - I don't need anything from you other than a deposit I will send everything out in the post to you - nothing to sign just confirmation of what we have discussed..... you can pay in full or £50 and 10x months for balance " Kin ell Thats me done, ............. They KNOW whats what, ...........and frankly the service is superb,................ like what snowball were a while back Did it for me !...a Pleasure to deal with ! Roadsure : Know their ar$e from elbow Nige
